Rihanna Called N-Word In Dutch Fashion Magazine 'Jackie'

Rihanna Jackie Magazine

First Posted: 12/20/11 09:30 AM ET Updated: 12/20/11 04:50 PM ET

Rihanna is well known for her fierce fashion sense, and regularly receives praise for her chic wardrobe choices. But one fashion magazine is apologizing after making a statement about the good girl gone bad that was totally out of style.

In the latest issue of Jackie, a Dutch fashion magazine, one feature is dedicated to showing readers how to imitate the singer's style, New York Magazine reports. But while imitation might be the highest form of flattery, the content was downright insulting, using a derogatory term to describe the artist:

She has street cred, she has a ghetto ass and she has a golden throat. Rihanna, the good girl gone bad, is the ultimate n***abitch and she displays that gladly--for her that means what's on can come off. If that means she'll be on stage half naked, then so be it. But Dutch winters aren't like Jamaican [ed. note: Rihanna is actually Barbadian, not Jamaican] ones, so pick a clothing style in which your daughter can resist minus ten [temperatures]. No to the big sunglasses and the pornheels, and yes to the tiger print, pink 'shizzle,' and everything that glitters. Now let's hope she won't beat anybody up at daycare.

After the offensive comment went viral, the magazine's editor Eva Hoeke issued a statement on their Facebook page, apologizing for the failed attempt at a joke but insisting they meant no harm:

Furthermore I hope that you all believe there was absolutely no racist motive behind the choice of words. It was stupid, it was naive to think that this was an acceptable form of slang--you hear it all the time on tv and radio, then your idea of what is normal apparently shifts--but it was especially misguided: there was no malice behind it. We make our magazine with love, energy and enthusiasm, and it can sometimes happen that someone is out of line. And then you can only do one thing: apologize. And hope that others wish to accept it. From the bottom of my heart I say it again: we never intended to offend anyone. And I mean that.

Although translations of the replies to Hoeke's post imply that fans were satisfied with the magazine's apology, the songstress is not accepting it. She took to Twitter to respond to the incident and to the editor:

@evajackie I hope u can read english, because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!! You ran out of legit, civilized information to print! There are 1000's of Dutch girls who would love to be recognized for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article. Instead, u paid to print one degrading an entire race! That's your contribution to this world! To encourage segregation, to mislead the future leaders to act in the past! You put two words together, with the intent of abasement, that made no sense..."N***A BITCH"?!....Well with all respect, on behalf of my race, here are my two words for you...F**K YOU!!!

Rihanna regularly uses the site to speak her mind and tell fans about other offensive experiences. On Dec. 18, she tweeted about falling victim to further racial abuse while at a hotel in Portugal, MTV UK reports. The Bajan beauty fumed on the social networking site about her interaction with a man at the hotel.

"I just met the most racist c*** EVER!!! This man said the craziest s**t abt black women called us dogs, sl*ts, we don't look like s**t, we don't belong in the same hotels," she said. "Needless to say, the #N***A in me came out! Bajan accent and all! Lol! Turns out the hotel manager's black. Oh and he had the NERVE to diss black people in his Tighty whitey's!!!! SMH...and tbh a lil black wouldn't hurt him."

UPDATE: 4:35 p.m. According to Parlour magazine, Eva Hoeke, the editor-in-chief of Jackie Magazine has resigned from the publication as a result of the backlash and reaction to the offensive feature on Rihanna's style.

The company issued a press release explaining the reason for the decision, and Hoeke apologized further for mishandling the situation:

I realize that my first reaction through Twitter, in which I indicated that it was a joke, has been an incomplete description of what me, and also the author of the article, meant. The term 'niggabitch' came from America and we solely used it to describe a style of dress. Because of the enormous pressure through social media I was tempted to promise amendment regarding the language in future issues of Jackie. Apart from that I also offered an rectification. I have now come to the conclusion that rectification is not the right solution. I regret that I have taken a stand too quickly regarding an article in Jackie--which moreover had no racial motive at its basis. Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately. After putting my heart and soul into Jackie for eight years, I realize that these errors--although not intended maliciously--are enough reason for leaving.

Hoeke went on to say that the magazine will invite Rihanna to share her feelings about the incident in an article for the magazine's next issue. To read the full press release, click here.

After just watching a little doco about the origins of the word f*gg*t. I have to say I am amazed at how many different meaning that word has had and dare I say it, I hope the N word goes the same way. I personally don't have a huge problem with it as such, but I guess it's been a while since someone called me it in a derogatory way and I guess it's been a while since that word has made me see red.

May one use the N-word if it is towards a redneck?

I'll simply say this: anyone who attempts to "justify" the use of the word n****r by using the old standby "well, it's confusing because all blacks use it" gives the world a first-class invitation into their thinly-veiled attempt at feigning ignorance to hide the worst kind of racism: the all-for-one, one-for-all variety.
All blacks do not use the word, and many of us see it for exactly what it is: hateful and divisive. Saying that it should be all right for whites to use the word n****r because they've seen black people do it is about as vapid as me assuming that all nerdy white men kidnap, sodomize, kill and eat young boys because Jeffery Dahmer did it. One's true nature is always crystal clear when the vessel containing it is painfully TRANSPARENT.

This is totally unacceptable language for any Magazine to sign off on.
Racism is showing its ugly head around the world and those who are
guilty of it are without excuse.

We have been having this dialogue since President Obama was sworn in
and we are finding that it is continuing to make its rounds around the world.

There are so many apologist who run to the defense of those who have been
caught red handed using hateful racist language followed by a half hearted
apology that is later retracted.

We will continue to have these discussions because racism is on steroids
and the out burst are mimicking involuntary outburst disease.

There was another offensive piece in the original article..."hope they don't beat anyone up at school" meaning with their ghetto outfit. The article touched on a bigger issue...how minorities are viewed/represented by the majority (whites). Then it's like the white mans burden kicks in too. We have to keep moving forward...no matter what obstacles get in the way. We're actually becoming the majority now and many can't handle the fact. Obama2012

Just sue the magazine, win, and be done with it...

In The Netherlands (where slavery was a common practice abroad) this type of slandering and defaming with an ethnic slant will not be looked upon too lightly in their justice system...

hehe, nobody cares about it. even dark dutch people don't care. we're only laughing at the Americans always with their racist finger towards everything.

Starvin-Marvin That is the problem!!!! Racism always has its defenders
and it exposes the ugliness that is in the World.

You may not care what people of color have to say about the constant
attacks on our ethnicity, but it is God that will have the last say.

You may think this is cute, but it is the height of ignorance and racial
insensitivity.

What a real shame!!!!

My question is: Since when did White Americans gain so much of a moral high ground that they can dictate to other cultures what to do and say?

According to the article, both insensitive incidents took place in Europe: one involved a Dutch fashion magazine (Netherlands) and the other a hotel in Portugal, Spain (FYI: Spaniards are not "white"). So please enlighten me how this has anything to do with "White Americans?"

I'm not sure what dictionary/thesaurus you are consulting to use words like "moral high ground" and "dictate" with regards to my opinion and comments (if another poster is right and your comments are directed toward me...or someone commenting here who's opinion is similar to mine). I said I never use the word, and my opinion is that no one should. All I did was expose a gaping weakness in the logic of those who use black vs. white to determine who in society can use the term in a socially acceptable way: what is socially acceptable for a person who has a black parent and a white parent? In other words, one of those MILLIONS of Americans who ride that line of black/white and defy the shallow defense of anyone's use of the N-word. That's not a standpoint of "moral high ground". That's "Logic 101."

My point is NOT to open the door for who can socially use the word. I don't think anyone should. My point is to open up the thinking of those who DO think it's acceptable. The black vs. white argument is too shallow to be meaningful in a world with millions of kids with both black and white parents. Logic 101.

Again, what you think and what elements within the Black culture accept or don't accept aren't the same...

Blacks and whites aren't even a dichotomy. White is a race, black is a culture...

There is no weakness in determining who says the n word...just don't you say it...that's all

It's great that you've come to the realization that race doesn't equal culture...

Most Anglo-Americans can't think past that concept while all of Europe had evolved 60 years ahead of us...

My point is that the Black culture can admonish it's own and correct what needs to be corrected without you

Don't they have basic STANDARDS OF PRACTICE in the profession of journalism? How did a journalist even end up using such language without restraint - and only find himself fired/resigning for not holding their "tongue"? I mean, it's one thing to let negative stereotypes about black women simmer in your mind - but to let loose on paper?
12:30 AM on 12/23/2011
Yes the editor was completely stupid in the comments that were made, but honestly Rhianna just made herself look like a hypocrite and a moron by turning around and using the same word she was angry about to describe herself. If the word itself is negative (which it is) then it doesn't matter who uses it, she doesn't get a pass and is allowed to describe herself as such while still able to tell other people not to refer to her as that.

If blacks want to stop other people from using that term they honestly need to start with themselves.
09:39 AM on 12/23/2011
No just stop saying the word if your not black. ITS THAT SIMPLE. What is so hard about it. don't say it don't write it.

Alija While you are partially correct, the flip side of the coin is Rhianna was holding
the Editor accountable for the words she used to describe her.

The N**** word has a violent and murderous past, and was used to press
my people down.

I don't use the word and think it should be retired from the English language
because it brings so much pain. I don't accept its mentioning in my presence
neither to I tolerate the B**** word.

I respect myself and others enough not to use filthy language in their
presence of any kind.

Peace and Love
