Baby Boy With Two Heads: Brazilian Mother Expecting Twins Gives Birth To Two-Headed Child (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/21/11 03:08 PM ET Updated: 12/21/11 05:24 PM ET

One mother learned her baby had two heads just moments before giving birth via Cesarean section in northern Brazil Monday morning.

Doctors say the babies, which have two heads and share one body, are conjoined twins with functioning organs.

The mother did not receive ultrasound scans throughout her pregnancy, but later told doctors she was initially told she was expecting twins, the Daily Mail reports.

The babies each have their own spines but share one heart, liver, pelvis and pair of lungs. She named the boys Jesus and Emanuel.

Doctors say they're still uncertain about how the twins will fare in the future, the Associated Press reports.

One baby is having respiratory problems, but both have begun nursing.

"What we've got to think about at this moment is to maintain the children in good condition and see how they will develop," Neila Dahas an obstetrician and gynecologist told reporters during a press conference, the Daily Mail reports.

The boys will not be able to be separated since they share vital organs, the New York Post reports.

"I want her [the mother] to understand that she does not have a monstrous son, a son with two heads, but she has two sons," Dahas told reporters.

The mother is reportedly excited to take her sons home following additional testing.

  • Indian woman with two wombs has given birth to two boys

Rinku Devi, 28, with her one-week-old sons (yet to be named) at the Mati Sadan Parijat Nursing Home on August 5, 2011 in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, India. An Indian woman with two wombs has given birth to two boys, one from each uterus. Delighted mum Rinku Devi delivered her one-in-fifty-million babies last Friday (29 July) in the northern city of Patna. Stunned doctors said giving birth to healthy babies conceived in different ovaries is so rare an average of one case is reported each year anywhere in the world. The babies, however, are not twins, as they were conceived at different times. According to gynaecologist Dr. Dipti Singh, "Rinku Devi suffers from a rare medical condition known as the uterus didelphys in which the womb develops in two parts, each with its own fallopian tube. It is quite a rare congenital condition and less than 100 women around the world are known to have it." Rinku's condition was not diagnosed until she went into labor, but after a one-hour-long surgery, she gave birth to two little boys weighing 2 kilograms and 1.5 kilograms respectively.

Heartbreaking she did not have a clue about this prior to. I don't know if I personally would have been able to go through with this birth, if I had the opportunity to abort. Even though I lean more toward life than pro-choice, I am not 'on the fence' about judging someone's decision. I still do not think it right to judge someone who makes the decision to abort. That's God's job, not yours. I will be keeping this family in my prayers as they continue their lives raising this child.

Please change the title and story to reflect that these are TWO babies with a shared body. This is not some sort of two-headed monster, but two little twin boys who are conjoined.

No, not a monster but from what I've read it seems there are the two single perfect heads and one body. Other than 2 spines, there is only one set of organs. Not sure why they are using the term conjoined here except for the fact that there are two heads and two spines. I feel for the parents and the family. I thought conjoined meant two separate bodies and two sets of limbs (or at the very least limited sets of limbs), two hearts, etc. and the joint at the hip, head or pelvis. God bless them all.

I am not in the medical field, but they are conjoined because they are two people sharing a common body. There are two brains and two heads which means they will be two distinct people with their own thoughts, feelings, and personalities. Conjoined twins is a more appropriate term because it acknowledges these are two people fused together, not one child with an extra extremity.

Conjoined means essentially twins whose bodies are physically connected in some fashion. There are many variations of conjoined twin including dicephalic parapagus twins which I believe these boys probably are as they resemble the similarly affected famous twins Brittany & Abby Hensel. Look them up, they're incredible young women and illustrate the concept better than I'm explaining it.

I'm not willing to condemn HuffPost for filing this under "Weird News"... where else would you put it? But perhaps "Unusual News" would be a better heading for articles like this. These beautiful babies are certainly that, and you have to admit, we ARE fascinated by their stories!

I was awed by the symmetry of the single body they share. If they make it past the infancy risks, they seem like they should do better as adults than many conjoined twins I've seen. How the split occurs determines the ultimate body shape, and it's often awkward, requiring support for one or both of the twins. Although I'm sure the presence of a lot of mass in the head region will present challenges, otherwise they seem quite normally shaped and that's a blessing. I hope to see a follow-up on these children as they get older and wish them only the very best that life can offer them.

How would proper care have helped here? I also wouldn't call it tragic, this is the only life they'll know so they'll adapt well as those two young girls did. The sad part is the way we humans treat one another, hopefully they won't be subjected to too many hateful people.

I think when the poster said 'proper care' she meant that ultrasound could have revealed this early enough for the mother to have chosen abortion. Regardless of where you stand on that issue, you should have the right to make that decision, free from judgment. Easy to say to someone else you should not even consider that option when you are not walking in their shoes.

They are TWO SEPARATE PEOPLE who happen to be conjoined. Each has a separate identity and they probably would like for people to get that.
09:08 AM on 12/23/2011
It's a shame to keep referring the the babies as "a boy." These children are two separate individuals. Two functioning brains, two personalities, and should be respected as so.
