Eddie Murphy's Ex-Wife Nicole Mitchell Falls Victim To $7M Investment Fraud

Eddie Murphy Ex Nicole

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A self-described Los Angeles entertainment entrepreneur is charged in a federal indictment unsealed Tuesday with bilking $7 million from a recent divorcee who is identified by law enforcement officials as the ex-wife of actor-comedian Eddie Murphy.

Troy David Stratos faces 14 charges of fraud, money laundering and obstructing justice. Stratos, 45, was arrested Tuesday and made his first appearance in Los Angeles federal court. His attorney, Walter Urban, did not return a telephone message.

The divorcee is identified in court papers as "N.M...the ex-wife of E.M." who filed for divorce in August 2005. Three law enforcement sources told The Associated Press that the victim is Eddie Murphy's ex-wife, Nicole Murphy, but the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the identity of the alleged victim in the case.

Court officials would not confirm that the alleged victim is the actor-comedian's ex-wife.

Court records show Nicole Murphy sued Stratos and others last year in Los Angeles federal court and refiled the lawsuit in May in Florida state court. She filed for divorce from Eddie Murphy in August 2005.

The indictment charges that Stratos persuaded his victim to invest the proceeds of her divorce overseas, where they would earn a high rate of return. She put the proceeds into a revocable trust with Stratos in Fair Oaks, a Sacramento suburb, according to the federal indictment.

Prosecutors say Stratos never invested the money, but spent it on himself. He also opened a bank account in Florida, they say, and used portions of the money to pay the victim's expenses while leading her to believe he was paying her expenses out of his own pocket.

Nicole Murphy's federal lawsuit alleges she put $11 million into a trust with Stratos but he and the other defendants spent the money on themselves.

The wire and mail fraud charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, while the money laundering and obstruction charges carry 10-year maximum sentences.

Stratos claimed to be involved in the entertainment industry as a movie and video producer and director, as well as a talent promoter, prosecutors said.

Attorneys representing Nicole Murphy in her federal lawsuit declined comment. She divorced Eddie Murphy after a 12-year marriage. They had four daughters and one son.

She previously owned a home in the wealthy Sacramento suburb of Granite Bay, though her federal lawsuit says she now lives in Calabasas outside Los Angeles.

Stratos told her he could sell her home to members of Middle Eastern royal families, but said she should lease luxury Rolls-Royce and BMW automobiles to make the property more attractive. The vehicles would then be sold as a package deal with the home, the indictment said.

But Stratos lived in the home and used the leased vehicles, never arranging for them to be sold, according to the charges. He later persuaded the woman to refinance several of her homes, including homes in Granite Bay and Sacramento, to get more cash, the charges allege.

Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, said Stratos has agreed to be returned to Sacramento to face the charges, and he is jailed pending a bail hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

The problem with Nicole (and many other women that marry wealthy men) is that they forget HE is the primary breadwinner, not she. They get wrapped up in the glamour and Hollywood lifestyle of "keeping up" with everyone else. They don't bother to make their own money anymore, and they develop a lifestyle that is far above the life they were born into. When the inevitable divorce comes, they go through the settlement like water because they've forgotten the value of money. Why? They depended on their husband so long for everything, it no longer mattered. Women who become financially dependent on a man of ANY income level are leeches.

Easy come easy go! She did not earn or work for the money, therefore she had no sense of respect for the mighty dollar. Apparently, to her, it was all Monopoly money. Hope she goes out and earn a living, then she will know how hard it is to earn a pay check and she will not throw the money around.

She was also fooled into thinking Eddie is straight. She must be easily fooled.

Like Bill Cosby told Oprah Winfrey a long time ago just as she was about to start getting wealthy, "Always sign your own checks." Meaning, ALWAYS know precisely where your money is going and what it's being spent on. This woman was greedy AND stupid. If you don't know enough about money to invest and understand what your investing in and how much, just put the money in an interest-earning account in an FDIC instured bank and start educating yourself on how to handle money. $7 Million will keep one quite comfortable for a long time while you learn about your money. This woman was more than a little stupid.##

it is always sad when old people, celebrities, and others loses tens of thousands or millions trying to make more tens of thousands or millions. Anyone with seven million should be content.

Actually, its a good idea to invest money because the rate of inflation eats away at money's purchasing power. The economy needs rich people to invest their money. Small businesses need the investment capital grow and generate jobs for the rest of us.

It seems that Nicole should have spent time investigating her financial adviser. Also, she should have diversified her money. Of course, she may have done so which would mean that she has more than $7M.

Lesson. Though it needn't be, never take investment advice from a person with three professions, not one of which is investment counselor. Producer, director, promoter, doesn't necessarily scream accounting wiz.

And when you do hire an investment adviser, investigate him or her and don't put all of your money with them. Additionally, read your financial statements and learn what the information means. Work with your adviser and be fully aware of what they are doing with your money.

How much does a brain cost?Bet she wishes now that she bought a brain.
01:27 PM on 12/29/2011
LOL! I was thinking almost the same thing about her buying a brain to go along with those good looks. Can somebody say DUMB BLOND in black face no less. Wow! Guys like me only WISH they had a centilla of $7 Million dollars. At least could pay off a nice house and buy a decent automobile. Hope she don't think Eddie M is gonna feel some kinda "RETROSORROW" for her silly behind. Especially when she so blatantly tried to OUT him when the divorce was hot and heavy. He haven't forgotten that I'M SURE. She coulda just got the divorce, got her half, and kept her MOUTH SHUT. But you know a woman........
08:40 PM on 06/04/2013
She did keep her mouth shut about her marriage, she allegedly signed a confidentiality agreement as part of the divorce settlement.,No one has behaved with more dignity and poise than Nicole.Shame on all of you for your insensitive remarks.Everyone makes mistakes...... some more costly than others.

Why am I SO not feeling sorry for her? I mean, if you had $11 Million dollars to invest, why try to get greedy the quick and as she found out, fraudulent way? If this guy claimed to have ties to Hollywood, why didn't she just ask Eddie to ask around to see if anyone he knew ever heard of this dude? I mean, I do feel somewhat sorry for her because dang, to lost $7 million dollars? I can't wrap my head around what a sucker punch to the gut that must be, but I just think she should have went through more traditional and well know companies to try to grow and invest her money.

There is nothing wrong with having and wanting to increase your wealth but she should have used more caution in doing so.

what is illegal about investing overseas?
11:02 PM on 12/23/2011
There is nothing wrong with investing overseas if you are actually investing overseas. This guy was taking her money and using it for himself. He was lying about being connected to Hollywood. He was lying to her about paying her expenses, he was getting her to invest in things that didn't exist. That's the fraud.

If she didn't want to ask the ex-hubby, she still had many resources available to her to question the validity of this "investor." Quite honesty, if I had $7Million to invest, first ... never place all your eggs in the same basket; secondly, my research would include the most reputable investment firm on the planet.

It would not surprise me if there was a personal relationship between these two resulting in far too much trust in this man.
12:37 AM on 12/24/2011
I agree with you JFaye. I was kind of thinking the same thing when I read this article. What's sad about it is that is money that she could have put in a trust fund for her and Eddie's kids although I am sure he will provide for his kids HIMSELF. After this, I wouldn't trust giving her a dime!
