David And Janean Richards Set Guinness Record With 331,038 Xmas Lights

HuffPost Weird News   First Posted: 12/21/11 10:50 AM ET Updated: 12/21/11 05:05 PM ET

If anyone has a reason to get lit up this Christmas, it's David and Janean Richards. They just set the world record for Most Christmas Lights on a Residential Property.

The Richards, who hail from Forest Act, Australia, a suburb of Canberra, managed to brighten up their home with a whopping 331,038 lights, which set a new record in a new Guinness World Records category.

The initial lightbulb for the record attempt went on in David's head four years ago, and he has spent his spare time since then building up his collection bulb-by-bulb.

''I did it for my kids, initially, and then it just got bigger and bigger,'' Richards told the Canberra Times. ''I remember one year a mother and child came through the driveway thinking no one was around and they started dancing to the music. It's all about putting a smile on people's faces.''

The idea is to raise money for SIDS and Kids (ACT), a charity dedicated to saving babies lives through the elimination of sudden and unexpected infant deaths during pregnancy, birth and childhood, as well as supporting bereaved families and funding research into stillbirth.

The charity helped the family during a time of crisis years ago, and while Richards declines to mention how much the family spent on the record-breaking display of lights, he says any donations made by visitors will go to SIDS and Kids.

Setting the record required hundreds of hours of work, 97,211 feet of LED strings, 15,000 cable ties and a 59-foot light-controlled tree. Then, in order to make it official, the family had to turn on the lights for 10 minutes and make a tape that could be sent to Guinness headquarters in London for confirmation.

Richards saw to it than the folks in Canberra and the judges in London got quite a show.

''It's not just Christmas lights," Richards said. "It goes in colors and waves up and down the driveway, it changes color and the tree spins.''

Although Richards has the official record, Zlatko Salaj, a 67-year old former telecommunications engineer from Croatia, got a lot of press for reportedly stringing up 1 million lights in his display.

As of yet, Salaj hasn't submitted an application to Guinness. But even if he does, Richards has no plans to set a new record. Instead, he hopes to be able to donate the lights to someone else who will use them to raise money for charity.

Check out these photos of holiday lights from around the world:

What is "weird" about this story?? Family should be celebrated for using these lights to benefit a charity for children; think this is the real feeling behind Christmas, the doing unto others; story really warmed my heart; Merry Christmas to all!!!

All I can think of is what an electric bill this will be, but if they can pay it, we can enjoy;)

Not bad but I wish someone could showcase what my neighbors on Long Island NY accomplished before 21st century technology. Way back in the 50's. It was equally impressive. And possibly still to this day.

The headline says 330, 000 lights, but the video says 1.2 million lights.

The headline talks about the family in Australia, but the video shows the man from Croatia who hasn't submitted his record to Guinness.

I just wish one lightbult went on in their heads that said: all the lightbulbs, cable, time, electricity and wasted energy......add it all up and make on donation to your charity. The end.

Awesomesauce. It goes to show that there are truly good people in this world. My respect to them and I truly how big the electric bill will be, even with LEDs

Amazing. Wouldn't you just love to pay that light bill?
11:55 AM on 12/22/2011
the display is for a charity for children
07:05 PM on 12/22/2011
Thanks, suzabellawilliam...I'm aware of that, but doubt the charity for children is paying the light bill. So....Amazing display! Wouldn't you just love to pay their light bill?

Be charitable, suzabellawilliam....pay their light bill for them. There ya go.

Would have been a better story with more pictures. Saw the video compilation of different houses and the link with only two pictures. So many lights, so few pics. Kinda' loses the effect of this family's accomplishment.

Jennings Osborne of Little Rock, Arkansas...in 1993 the spectacle had over three million lights and attracted thousands of gawkers. Neighbors were angered by the traffic and sued; the state Supreme Court declared the display a nuisance and ordered it scaled down. Osborne's final display was 1994.

The 1993 display included an illuminated globe in the back yard; two rotating carousels of lights on the estate's circular driveway; a 70-foot-tall Christmas tree of 80,000 lights; and a canopy of 30,000 red lights over the drive.

The display was moved to Disneyworld. MGM Studios and first displayed in 1995.

Now seen at Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, USA with 5,000,000 lights displayed. A beautiful tribute to a philanthropic family

Just saw the display at Disney World last week. It was amazing. The other Christmas decarations at the parks were a bit underwhelming, but that made up for it.

These people hate the environment for one. And they could use the money they have wasted on this stupidity and feed hundreds of families or at least their children. Why do people do this?

First of all, it's their money, which means it's none of your business how they spend it. Second, they are raising money for a SIDs charity. Is that okay with you or do you have a different charity you think they should be supporting?

Also, did you not catch the part about LED lights? They used LED lights, not incandescent lights. When reading an article and leaving a comment, you should begin by reading the article instead of jumping to conclusions and posting angry comments that aren't justified.

Sandy, why not go live in a cave somewhere? Extremists like you make people resent the message you're trying to encourage. These are beautiful displays, relax a little..

Merry X-Mas? These people do not know the reason for the season
06:44 PM on 12/21/2011
Well, let's see. The birth of Jesus is the reason for the season and raising money for charity is something Jesus would see nothing wrong with. They were having fun doing a charitable act, nothing wrong with that.

Reading your reply, it made no sense to me, if I was siding with the devil, maybe mindBelow would make sense. I actually think you were maybe just trying to put me down, some people are just like that.

The reason for the season? You mean of course that Saturnalia just so happened to be held from December 17th to the 23rd, so when the Christians took over they decided it would be a good idea to make up a holiday to help Pagans convert easier? You also I am sure mean that even Christian scholars have no clue when Christ was born.
So I am sure that you will want to step of your high horse and realize the true meaning of Christmas is to be happy together with your family and loved ones. NOT to get all self righteous over the shorting of a holidays title so it is easier spelled in a wonderfully beautiful lights display.

You non-believers really amuse me. You all think that the whole world should adopt your way of thinking. And as for being on a high horse, you better believe it. I am proud to be a BELIEVER of Jesus Christ and nothing that you say can ever dull that. So go ahead and shorten Christmas, you and all your kind will have to answer for it.
