Immigrants Founded Half Of Top U.S. Start-Up Companies: Study

Startups Immigrants

(Sarah McBride) - Immigrants founded or cofounded almost half of 50 top venture-backed companies in the United States, a new study shows, underscoring some of the high stakes in potential immigration reform.

The venture capital community argues the study, completed by research group National Foundation for American Policy, proves the need to overhaul rules governing how entrepreneurs can immigrate to the United States to spur job development.

"It's a gamble whether an entrepreneur should stay or leave right now, and that's not how the immigration system should work," said Mark Heesen, president of the National Venture Capital Association, on a call with reporters. "What we need is legislation that helps these entrepreneurs from outside the United States."

Of the 50 top venture-backed companies, 23 had at least one immigrant founder, the study found. In addition, 37 of the 50 companies employed at least one immigrant in a key management position such as chief technology officer.

Companies with immigrant founders include some of Silicon Valley's hot start-ups, such as textbook-rental service Chegg, founded by Indian Aayush Phumbhra and Briton Osman Rashid; online craft marketplace Etsy, founded by Swiss Haim Schoppik; and Web publisher Glam Media, founded by Indians Samir Arora and Raj Narayan.

The countries that supplied the most founders included India, Israel, Canada, Iran and New Zealand, the study found, and the immigrant-founded companies created an average of 150 jobs.

The study looked at the top 50 venture-backed companies as measured by research firm VentureSource, based on factors such as company growth and the amount of capital raised. VentureSource considered only companies valued at less than $1 billion.

Young companies and their backers say the rules are too cumbersome and encourage non-U.S. citizens to launch start-up businesses elsewhere, or bog down companies in red tape if they commit to basing in the United States.

One obstacle to the loosening of immigration rules for entrepreneurs is a tendency in Congress to consider legal and illegal immigration jointly, Heesen said. Because illegal-immigration issues are so divisive, he said, overall immigration reform has bogged down.

The NFAP identified bills pending in the House of Representatives and the Senate that would help through measures such as lowering the amount of capital an entrepreneur has to raise before being eligible for an immigrant visa.

One of these high tech startups was Sycamore Networks.
This was a big weel known company
At one time this company was valued at about $20 billion.
It is now bankrupt. From the stock chart it looks like it took off
back in 2000 when it was founded and then crashed within
two years. The cofounder was from India.
I wonder how many af these immigrant founded companies
are as succesful as Microsoft or Dell
I think none of them come close to producing the kind
of revenue that Dell or Microsft produce
Microsft produces $70 billion in revenue per year and Dell does
$60 billion.

What percentage of criminal gangs were started by illegal immigrants ? What percentage of drug dealers are illegal immigrants ? The issue is not about legal immigrants, it's about the illegals.

And of those 50 immigrants, how many where here illegally? NONE.

The U.S. State Department brings thousands of "Political Asylum Refugees" to our country to be "resettled" every year. They receive a cash allowance and food stamps.

"The American Way". Colonizers stole land from Native Americans, then built the country literally on the backs of Black slaves, Asians, and Latinos. I love and hate the disgrace of a country I live in. What a paradox.....

Wrong, it is the Democratic Party's constitiuents that are economically affected by immigrants who cause the loss of their jobs and increased rents in their neighborhoods, over-crowded schools and increased crime.

If this is true, it sure makes the 99%ers look bad.

They said that the rich prevent anyone who isn't already rich from starting a business from scratch and becoming a success.

Perhaps I'm confused or didn't read the article clearly, but why is this in the Latino news section? Are a majority of these start ups by Latinos?

You know what.. if you look at the people who are reporting all this stuff, and the people who did the report, they are not citizens, nor do they tell us where .. exactly.. they got the information, and in some cases, suggest they got the information from sources no one else can seem to find.

You know what... I don't believe it.

Chegg sells the Cramster service which is solutions to math and science text books to subscribers. Great idea, dodgy content by "experts". Ask them who these "experts" are ... turns out most of them cant even speak English. The solutions are flat out wrong ... possibly written by low-cost graduates in India, not one ounce of US wages or taxes paid. Ask Chegg/cramster about their experts ... they will not disclose information about them. Their solutions flat out are incorrect in several instances ... better off higher a college kid to tutor ... helps the economy.

Venture capitalists have been pushing this bogus argument to make tech visas easier. They fund
high risk business that most people dont understand, inflate that business, bring it to the
public market and foist off the snake oil business to an unsuspecting public or get their
friends in cash-rich corporations to buy up the startup and cash out. Most of these startups
hire immigrant students out of grad school and/or a large number of H1Bs in this country and
get the bulk of their work done in India. If this article is showcasing some "research" out of
some Ivy school, most of it is ... how shall I say it ... lacks credibility. They dont create jobs, they
steal from America.

Yes, you are right, a lot of those ventures are elaborate "pump and dump" schemes where the pre- Initial Public Offering investors get big profits when they can legally unload their positions.

There are already 30 million foreign-born people working in our country (the highest percentage their has ever been.) If they are so great at starting businesses there should be hundreds-of-thousands of them. But there are only a few that become the subject of articles promoting more immigration to our country.

The immigrants actually started half of the new "venture capital startups," not half of all new business. About 1 million new business startup in America each year, but only 400 to 800 are venture capital startups. The term "venture capital" appiles to funding for the most risky enterprises. So, immigrants started about 200 to 400 venture capital enterprises. Thse are legal immigrant, of course.

The IRS issues "Taxpayer Identification Numbers" to Illegals to be used in place of the Social Security numbers they don't have for "tax filing purposes" (that's how they can buy real estate) so they could also start a business to ask for venture capital, but investors are not going to place their money with a criminal.

Their are remarkable tax breaks and grants available for those immigrant start ups to boot. Obama still has them on the books too.. while American Citizens are being moved out of their homes and jobs go a-winging.

The Huffington Post headline tries to misslead readers into thinking immigrants started half of all new business in America. However, immigrants actually started only half of the new 'venture capital" startups. Venture capital funds the most high-risk new enterprises. There are about 400 to 800 venture capital startups a year. So, the headline could have been "Immigrants Start 200 to 400 New Business." The article is about legal immigrants, of course. Viortually all Americans welcome legal immigrants.

The headlines here are misleading more often than not, but as much as this site plays with them, all of the major press covering this story headlined it the same way. After a while you learn what to stay away from on this site. You have to read the story and then Google the references, but since many people just read the headlines...

In 2009, during the dprths of our Recession, the government granted 1,350,000 immigrants "Green Cards" so they can work. In 2010 another 1,500,000 were issued. They have to have jobs lined-up before coming here, so that 2,850,000 jobs that we cannot apply for now.

Our country does not need any more immigrants.

Wrong, Only 140,000 employement based are given per year.

Please - Stop spreading false information.

Even of those 140,000 10k are from people who have invested 1M and created atkeast 10 Jobs per Visa, Its called the EB5 category.

Of the rest, the applications for those visa holders went in during 2006, 2007 it takes 3-5 years to get a green card. The applications filed during 2009 wee drastically lower.
" about 15K Phds also form the EB1 category, who dont need a Job to apply for a Green card, they can show their research and acedamic excelence to gain a Green card.

and finally - Jobs are Gained , they are not transferred.

There is enough research and evidence that Immigration created Jobs and not reduces it.

"our country does not need immigrants" - If Job taking is your logic behind that statement, was america at its best before the european settlers came in?

The European Union has an "open borders" policy, anyone from an EU member country can work in any other country. The problems arise when Middle Easterners start arriving in large numbers, using a lot of social welfare programs and then making demands that their religious customs be accepted by the native Europeans.
