'American Horror Story' Finale: Ryan Murphy Talks Season 2

American Horror Story Season 2

First Posted: 12/22/11 03:46 PM ET Updated: 12/22/11 05:26 PM ET

Fans of Ryan Murphy's macabre thriller "American Horror Story" were torn after Wednesday night's season finale. For some, the thought of losing the series' stars Connie Britton and Jessica Lange in Season 2 seems ridiculous, but according to Murphy, that was always his intention.

"Every season of the show will be a different haunting," Murphy told The Insider via a conference call. "What you saw in the finale was the end of the Harmon house and the second season of the show will be a brand new home. Or building to haunt. Just like this year, every season of the show will have a beginning, middle and end."

While it may be the end for the Murder House diaries, that doesn't mean that the Season 1 cast, including the Golden Globe nominated Lange, won't be back for a second season. However, you might not recognize them.

"Some of [the actors] will be coming back," Murphy revealed on the call. "We're in negotiations with several of them, but they will be playing completely different characters, creatures, monsters and etcetera. I would have all of [the actors] back in a heartbeat, some of the actors we're talking to will be playing something completely different than they played this season, and something completely different than they've ever played. "

Now, the biggest question yet to be answered is where the second season will take place. Murphy hinted that he's not interested in another haunted house storyline. And the only horror story he wouldn't touch? Don't expect "American Horror Story" to delve into the "Twilight" world of vampires.

So what can we expect in Season 2? If you look closely enough, Murphy left fans a clue.

"There is a clue in the last three episodes where we say what the second season will be."

Great show, I liked it. several twists and turns in the storyline with flashbacks that make you say "aha" as it fills in the clues as to why a charactor did what he/she did. But the drawback with this type of story is you had to watch each episode to keep up. Like the show "Lost", if you didn't see every show, you were lost.

Make new shows similar to shows that everyone in the family can watch. WKRP,Carol Burnett show, DragnetcGracie and Allen,Gunsmoke,Mork,George Gobel, Father knows best, etc, instead of the Exes,Wives of (you pick),Betty White show that show thats she is in etc.

The Republican party should do the same thing.

I tried to get into this show, but could not get past the foul language, nudity and sex to find a thread of plot. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

If it's bad rubbish, then why is it up for so many awards? You are warned about the language nudity. Happened to be a awesome show, your loss!!!

Maybe it's me, but I just couldn't get into this series. It felt as though the writers were just making it up as they went along and then tried to tie all the stringy plots together at the end. The storyline seemed like a backdrop to showcase the violence. I'm all for a good horror story, but this one was not for me. I was actually bored. It was a real Mulligan's Stew of every horror movie or story you heard of: Mass teen murder, old murders ( The Black Dahlia ), Gay murder, family murder, a dash of "The Shining" ..... whatever element is out there, they tossed into the pot.

Jessica Lange is an amazing actress ( up there with Meryl Streep, if you ask me ) but she is wasted in this series. Somebody find her a decent movie script!!

The show that I stumbled on and actually is very, very good is "Homeland." We started watching the previous episodes on cable on demand and ended up doing our own marathon.

Things change. And, so will the next season. We'll see if they manage to "kill" it off (the show)?
10:56 AM on 12/27/2011
It is a shame because this show is unlike any other show on TV and now with killing the main characters and them not coming back next season and not the same house, I highly doubt this show will continue to succeed next season. Another that will be cancelled :(

Actually, I thought American Horror Story was a bit underdone. I didn't think much of the Beetlejuice "lets get the humans out of our house" thing they did at the end. A bit too much like Twin Peaks for me...I give it a B+ but doubtful I will watch it next year

Seriously? Be honest, this was a high point for the viewers compared with the other fare offered by the networks and cable. Wednesday night was the only night I looked forward to watching TV. Repeats of Sex & the City, followed by the Tudors on BBC, and capping it off with American Horror Story. Three genres, but all intelligent and highly entertaining. BTW, loved Twin Peaks, but it went from sublimely odd to insufferably outlandish during the last season because the characters had been painted into their own bizarro corners.

One of THE biggest disappointments of the season was Secret Circle, which just could never figure out what direction to take.

Another disappointment, like the show and the people in it, time to move on I guess, we'll see if next season can even come close to toping this one.

Why do we need such a program as, American Horror, in the first place? If one simply reads today's offerings on AOL's Welcome Page, that ought to pretty much 'satisfy' everyone's 'thrist' for horror: a nine year old girl murdered for no reason. (15 registered sex offenders living in the trailor park where this child was murdered!) Another child presumed to have been killed and dumped in a dumptster ~ quite possibly by her own mother!!! A lunatic 19 year old with a gun shoots a veteran at his Homecoming Party, paralyzing him for life! Do I need to go on? Why do we need all of this rehashed in graphic and agonyzingly 'real' television productions? I don't get it! And I don't 'watch' it on television or in the theatre! There is NOTHING entertaining about people being harrassed; frightened; beaten; raped; or murdered! Is it any wonder WHY there is so much violence? I don't blame all violence on television, but one HAS TO ADMIT, that television and motion pictures HAVE to play some part in all of our real-life horror! Garbage in ... garbage out ... and SO MUCH that is on the small ~ and big ~ screens is SO MUCH GARBAGE anymore! Perhaps Ryan Murphy could put his talents and resources to MUCH BETTER USE?

Unless you have seen the show, you can't quite appreciate how well-written it is. Yes, there is violence in the world, and a great deal of tragedy. If you are not a fan of the horror genre, then simply don't watch it. For those of us who are able to separate fiction from reality, it can be quite entertaining. We can't control what happens around us. We can control how we react to things. There are many, many tragedies that occur every day. When you say we have a "thrist" (I am assuming you mean thirst) for horror, there is a difference. No one wants to see real horror stories such as the murder of a child, or all the shootings that take place for no reason. Movies and television are meant for entertainment, and everyone has different taste when it comes to entertainment.
Blaming movies and television for any of this is juvenile. The fault often lies with parents who allow their children to view violent programming before they are able to separate right from wrong. It lies with parents who allow their children to play violent video games, and make excuses because "they are going to see it anyway," or "their friends all have the games." We need to look at how we are raising the youth of the world. Parents need to be parents again and say, "NO!"

@Seriously69.....Well said! I loved the show, it was different to say the least!

Seriously69,

I absolutely 'second' rockjl's comment. Very well written/well executed response. Could not agree with you more (especially "the fault often lies with the parents..."!) Thank you for your keen insight and for taking the time to put your thoughts into words. Whew -- there is hope!

and, yeah, I liked AHS a lot.

They need to band together and enforce rules, not give in because they feel some sort of guilt because they deny their child something. They need to sit down and talk to their children about right and wrong. Give them the tools to build moral character.
This is the same concept as blaming the internet for the world's problems. The internet is only a tool. It's all in how you use it. A gun on a table is harmless. A gun in the hands of a responsible adult can be useful. A gun in the hands of psycho-path is dangerous.
My point is, you can't blame movies, television, and the internet for the violence in the world. You have to look at the person, the parenting, and why these things occur. I have enjoyed scary movies my whole life. I also had parents that took the time to explain the difference between what is right and what is wrong. We were never left to just watch what we wanted as children. My parents took control, said, "No," and that was that.
So please don't rant and rave about violence in movies and entertainment as a source of all that's wrong with the world. Look a little deeper. Besides, if we banned violence from tv, there would never be another news program again.

Wow. Didn't realize there was anotheer part to your response. Thank goodness I didn't miss it. Your responses have left me impressed, relieved, proud, thankful (that I'm not 'the only one'/crazy), and generally, hopeful.

Thank you again.

Gee...dunno...end of season 1 left me kind of empty. Old fashioned guy here who likes some salvage from a story. Probably will pass on next year, but it was an interesting run.

A new cast makes sense for a new season.
