Belleayre Mountain in New York is a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders. As part of a series on ski resorts, Huffington Post Travel offers our guide to Belleayre Mountain, featuring all the key information snow lovers need to know before they hit the slopes.
The Basics
Located on 2,193 acres in the heart of the Catskill Mountain Forest Preserve,
is about three hours away from New York City and less than two hours from Albany International Airport. Belleayre is close to other area Catskill resorts as well as the New York Thruway, making it easily accessible by car or bus. This ski resort is popular with a variety of skiers, including families and advanced skiing enthusiasts.
The Mountain
Belleayre Mountain is 3,429 feet high and features a 1,404-foot vertical drop. The regular season, from early November to early March, usually lasts about 150 days, and the
averages about 120 inches of snow annually. The resort also has the ability to make 98 percent of its own snow. The snow on Belleayre Mountain is powdery, and the longest run stretches for more than 2 miles. Lifts run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The upper part of the mountain includes steep runs located off of the summit ridge.
Trails And Lifts
Skiers will find a total of 47
, including nearly six miles of cross-country terrain and several double-diamond trails. About 22 percent of the trails are for beginners, 58 percent for intermediates and 20 percent for expert skiers. Belleayre Mountain has plenty of signature trails, including the Deer Run, which is popular for skiers interested in cruising an extremely high trail. The Roaring Brook is an ideal trail for beginners, and the Dot Nebel trail caters to intermediate and expert skiers. Eight lifts service the mountain, including a triple chair, double chair, detachable high-speed quad and handle tow. The ski resort also offers a terrain park, two progression parks and five glades.
In The News
For skiers interested in becoming a ski instructor, Belleayre Mountain holds training programs offered by the Amateur Ski Instructors Association (ASIA). The resort also plays host to a variety of racing programs, including
(National Standard Race) competitions and a Holiday Race Camp during the Christmas season. The Belleayre Mountain Racing Association coaches children in ski racing, even those that can't afford to pay for the lessons. There is also a Kids Camp for children ages 4 to 12, which provides a full day of instructional training starting at $80.
Cost
A basic
begins at $48 for adults and $43 for seniors 62 to 69 years old. Seniors 70 and older ski for free. Lift tickets for children ages 6 to 12 go for $38. Regular (adult) skiers can purchase season passes for $742. Rental packages are available starting at $33, which includes skis, boots and poles for a full day of skiing. Ski
begin at $15, although private and special group sessions cost more.
Apres-Ski
Belleayre Mountain has a variety of lodges on site, including two main lodges with bars at the bottom of the mountain and a smaller lodge located on the top. Skiers can purchase food at these lodges or visit a variety of lounges and restaurants in the nearby Catskills area that serve American, seafood and Swiss cuisine. Every year, the
presents a Winter Showcase, featuring fine crafts and arts, in the Upper Lodge of the ski resort.
