Obama Speaks On Latest Payroll Tax Cut Developments

Barack Obama Payroll Tax Cut

12/22/11 05:50 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is welcoming a deal on extending a payroll tax cut and congratulating Congress for ending its "partisan stalemate."

The president issued a statement Thursday evening moments after House Speaker John Boehner announced that House Republicans were reversing course and accepting a two-month extension agreed to by the Senate and supported by the president.

Obama says the deal, which also extends unemployment benefits, is good news just in time for the holidays and the right thing to do for American families and the economy.

And he is thanking Americans who pressured Congress to get it done.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

President Barack Obama on Thursday chided House Republicans he said are holding up an extension of expiring payroll tax cuts, saying the debate is "about the American people."

To make his point, Obama was flanked at the White House by people who said they would be stretched thin financially if Congress failed to extend the cuts before the end of the year. If no deal is reached, the White House says a person making $50,000 a year would see a loss of about $40 per paycheck.

"Now there may be some folks in the House who refuse to vote for this compromise because they don't think 40 bucks is a lot of money," Obama said. "But anyone who knows how to stretch a budget knows that at the end of the week or the end of the month, $40 can make all the difference in the world."

In seeking to ratchet up pressure on Republicans for a deal, Obama reiterated his call for a two-month extension of the payroll tax cuts, a measure already agreed to by an overwhelming majority of Senators from both parties. He said the House GOP's refusal to sign on to the bipartisan deal was exactly why the American people have grown so frustrated with Washington.

"This is an issue where an overwhelming number of people in both parties agree," Obama said. "How can we not get that done? Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when people agree to things we can't do it? It doesn't make any sense. Enough is enough."

House Republicans say they oppose the two-month deal because it doesn't provide the public and businesses enough certainty. They've called on Obama and Senate Democrats to instead negotiate a full-year extension now.

Earlier Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner called Obama, their second conversation in as many days. The White House said Obama committed to immediately starting talks on a full-year deal if the House first passes the two-month extension. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has also urged the House to pass a short-term extension while starting work on the full-year deal.

Obama has let Republicans define the issues again, adopting their language, their spin, by saying that extending the "holiday" on paying into the Social Security trust fund as "raising taxes".

If you support payroll tax "holidays", you're also for the end of Social Security and Medicare.

What follows this is the privatization of Social Security.

There are other ways to get stimulus money to the poor and middle classes

Where did you get your information on the above..It seems to me that all the statements made above have been made by Repubs. There plans won't work. The Repubs have got a problem now with not passing the tax holiday can you imagine what would happen if they tried to privatize SS and Medicare. I do believe they suggested these things before and ended up backing down.

==============================

There is nothing that Republicans have done without Democrats' help, without Democrats having signed on to.

Obama put Social Security and Medicare on the table for cuts - There's no getting around that.

Obama and Democratic leadership have already indicated they're on board with Social Security cuts, privatizing, etc.  Democratic House leader (DCCC),  congressman Chris Van Hollen made an interesting parsing slip on CNN [searchword: "partial"]  about that very point.  We're being set up to accept that which they're saying is inevitable.

Obama packed his own Deficit Commission with Social Security looters.   And here.  And here.

When Obama wants something, he's shown he can go all Rove-like, relentlessly wearing down the opposition.  The problem is that he and the DLC-controlled Democratic Party don't want what the Democratic voters put them into power to get.

Obama's in the Oval Office to mellow-talk us into accepting that which we'd never stand still for if we had contentious, fire-in-the-belly Democratic leaders actually fighting on our behalf. Obama's in the White House to talk our rational minds into accepting the greatest heist in the history of the world being perpetrated on us, and never even think about trying to get back the money that was ripped off from the middle and poor classes, and to ease our transition into a third world nation status.

Obama is the gr!fter leading off the second half of the con game, which is to squeeze the rest of the dimes from the poor and middle classes. It began with part 2 of Bush's Medicare Reform Act of 2003 (high-priced junk health insurance that has no cost controls), continues with more *AFTA treaties (outsourcing more Americans' jobs) and "payroll tax 'holidays'".

There should be tax HIKES on corporations and the rich.  There should be massive cuts to the military.  Banks should be threatened with nationalization unless they begin lending to small businesses. There have been more than 3.5 million home foreclosures but there are 11 million more in the pipeline -- There must be principal write-downs.

Democratic politicians should be beating this drum, loudlyconstantly, and pushing the People's Budget instead of working off of a set of corporate lobbyists' plans.

Why aren't Obama, Pelosi, Reid and Democrats talking about the Progressive Caucus's budget and plan to balance the budget (reduces the deficit by $5.1 trillion)?  It beats Obama's AND Republicans' plans.

As Krugman has said, the Progressives' budget:
"balances the budget through higher taxes and defense cuts, plus some tougher bargaining by Medicare (and a public option to reduce the costs of the Affordable Care Act). The proposed tax hikes would fall on higher incomes, raising the cap on payroll taxes (takes care of Social Security's solvency forever)... and unlike the Ryan plan, it actually makes sense."

But Obama takes solutions that work for the People, the vast majority of Americans, off the table.  Whether it's ending Bush's tax cuts or the wars, the '14th Amendment Solution' (and it was, indeed, a legitimate option), etc., Obama kneecaps and handicaps the Democratic voters who put him and Democrats into power.

14 million Americans would have found about $35 Obamabux in their paycheck while we are paying the most for gasoline (on years average) since Jimmy Carter. So while Obama plays politics for show over $35, we pay close to $2,500 Obamabux a year because Obama won't drill, opposes the pipeline and rejects Boone Pickens switch over to natgas. He can't see the forest through the trees as his focus is on pennies while ignoring the long term macro realities that would bring gas down below $2/gallon (and heating oil and electric prices) and put some real disposable income into Americans pockets.

There is a contentious story out there that I don't expect HP to cover: did BO travel with Michelle and the girls to Hawaii (Chicago Sun-Times says yes), or did he stay in DC for Obama's photo op at PetSmart? Was he flown back solo from Hawaii or does the President use a look alike for BO? Kind of cheese imo.

Democrats already caved by giving them the pipeline for only a 2 month extension. What the Republicans get for the other 10 months will be gravy.

Okay, we get that the GOP has stumbled badly on this one...figures when all they want to do is beat Obama and don't give a crap about the middle class. But...where are the democrats? They should be cancelling their trips home and sitting in the house chambers as a show of unity. That they're ready to work. That they're ready to move this country forward. That they're ready to vote. Shame the GOP into actually doing something. Go back to their constituents and say: "Look, we cancelled our vacations with families and friends because we felt this issue was important. Obviously the GOP doesn't or they would be here, too." C'mon, Dems, step it up.
02:39 PM on 12/22/2011
I watched the Repubs walk out of the chamber and the Dems yelled at them to embarress them to stay and compromise. I did here that some House members have gone home but I don't know whether they were Dems or Repubs or both.

and so it raises the suspicion,....."is this all just Kabuki Theater and are the Democrats just a part of the cast to appease the ignorance and tolerance of Americans"? Is it all fixed by the MIFC who speaks through the lobbyists and greases the influence club of Washington?

Here is an article showing how the United States, holder of over $15 trillion in debt, is unlikely to ever achieve fiscal balance:

http://viableopposition.blogspot.com/2011/11/united-states-debt-interest-scenarios.html

Should interest rates rise to the average level of the past decade, interest on the debt would reach $700 billion, consuming 70 percent of individual income tax revenue and all but negate the impact of Budget Control Act spending cuts.

Thanks for your totally unrelated ramblings. Are you trying to make the argument that taxes should be raised on the struggling working and middle class to pay off the deficit? Economists overwhelmingly agree that increasing the tax on the middle class is not good for the economy and the fragile recovery needed to generate revenues.

How about increasing the tax on the "job creators?" As a CPA and tax accountant, I can say that "job creators" invest in jobs, equipment and innovation when faced with high taxes on net profit. A 50% tax is like a 50% discount on equipment and manpower. Business expenses, including jobs, are tax deductible. A tax deduction is worth much less when taxes are low. Also income taxes are only payable on net income, so increasing taxes only affects profitable businesses.
