'The X Factor' Finale Preview: Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid Joke About $10,000 Bet (VIDEO)

Who'll Get The Last Laugh?

The first night of "The X Factor" finale featured a duets competition that paired Josh Krajcik with Alanis Morisette, Chris Rene with Avril Lavigne and Melanie Amaro with R. Kelly.

Backstage, "Good Day LA" (weekdays, 9AM PST on Fox) talked to Kelly, who reflected on his performance. "Even when I was doing it in the studios, it was very challenging for me. It takes a lot of courage to get up there and do it," he said. And while Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger loved the performance, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul, who Simon referred to as "Grumpy and Dumpy," both had issues with Amaro's inability to shine next to Kelly.

Rene's duet with Avril Lavigne was special for her, since Rene's mentor, L.A. Reid, signed her to her first record deal. "To be out there, performing in front of him, it was awesome!" she gushed.

When "Good Day" caught up with Cowell and Reid., the two were in friendly competition mode, each boasting that their protege would be sell more records than the other. Cowell brought up a $10,000 bet they made months ago. "Are we doing cash or check?" he asked, but rather than responding, Reid just laughed. Thursday night we'll see who laughs last.
