Indonesia Tsunami Survivor Returns To Home After 7 Years

By FAKHRURRADZIE GADE   12/23/11 10:55 AM ET   AP

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia -- A girl who was swept away in the Indian Ocean tsunami seven years ago said Friday she broke down in tears this week after tracking down her parents, who had long lost hope of finding her alive.

The 15-year-old showed up in Aceh province's hard-hit town of Meulaboh earlier this week, saying that not long after the wave hit she was "adopted" by a woman who called her Wati and forced her to beg, sometimes beating her and keeping her in the streets until 1 a.m.

When the teen stopped bringing in money, she was told, "Go ahead, leave ... go find your parents then, they're in Meulaboh."

With only patchy memories about her past – she was only 8 when the tsunami hit, an age where most children don't know their relatives' full names – Wati began her search, telling people she thought her grandfather was "Ibrahim."

She met a pedicab driver in Meulaboh, who brought her to a man by that name. Though she didn't look familiar, he, in turn, quickly summoned her parents.

"When I saw my mother, I knew it was her," said the wide-eyed girl, her hair cropped close to her head. "I just knew."

The family, who say the girl's original name is Meri Yuranda, is also now convinced.

The Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen nations hit Aceh – closest to the epicenter of the magnitude-9.1 quake that spawned the towering waves – the hardest.

With tens of thousands of bodies washed to sea in that province alone, many families continue to cling to hope of finding lost loved ones. Reunions, however, are rare. And all announced in the last five years have turned out to be untrue. Even so, some mothers continue to believe a child is theirs even after DNA tests prove otherwise.

Either way, without any challenges to the claims, Wati now has a family.

Yusniar binti Ibrahim Nur, the mother, told The Associated Press she had all the evidence she needed.

"She has her father's face," the 35-year-old woman said by telephone. "And when I saw the scar over her eye and mole on her hip, I was even more sure."

It doesn't worry her, she said, that the girl and her husband have different accounts of what happened on the day the tsunami hit their tiny village of Ujong Baroh just outside of Meulaboh.

Wati remembers her father putting her into a boat with her younger sister, long presumed dead as well, and then getting separated. She says she remembers being surrounded by water and crying.

Her father says he put both of his daughters on the roof of their house hoping they'd be safe.

"Maybe she fell into the boat, maybe someone helped her. I just don't know," said Yusniar.

"I just thank God my prayers have been answered," she said. "For years, I searched everywhere. I'd really given up."

All these comments giving God credit and praise for getting Meri Yuranda back to her family and none criticizing God for washing Meri away and letting her end up as a slave for years. It's like when my cousin was in a horrible auto accident when he was quite young. He crashed through the windshield and was nearly killed. For a long time, he was hospitalized and had to have a ton of glass picked from his face and upper body. So many people in the family praised God for seeing that he survived the crash, but not one questioned God for putting him through that terrible accident. Not looking to pick a fight here. Just sayin'.

Slavery such as this child was forced into is extremely common in all of Asia. I witnessed it a lot when I was in China over several years. It would be rather easy for authorities to capture the slave owners but they have no real interest in doing so because the police are often complicit in the crime and take bribes to allow it to continue.

This story really puts a lump in my throat. I can't even imagine this kind of trauma and terror for those poor people. God bless this family and all the others whose suffering continues and will continue until they die, looking for their children. Imagine a life of searching faces every time you go out the door, thinking it might be the day you find your child.

I can just picture the loving and benevolent God, saying to one family, "You believed, so I brought her back" to another "You lacked faith, so I proved myself to you" to a third, "You lacked faith, so I ignored you," to a fourth, "You had faith, so I tested it," and to a fourth, "Guess it just wasn't your day."

the best use of god i can think of is to move forward with optimism and kindness. if you have that, you don't need to pretend. if you don't have it, pretending won't help.

lame interpretation. Especially for a country with a different faith.

Real lame comment ash090200, as Indonesia's three main religions are Islam, Protestant, and Roman Catholic, and last I read, all three believe in a God; in fact all three believe in the SAME God, as they all accept the Old Testament! So before you put down another's faith, get your own facts correct. Try reading about current events and history. You might even try the Bible and the Koran. Don't ruin a wonderful story.

ahhh so because they are not Christian than there is no God in their belief system, is that it skippy?

Touching how two people can put their pain together to heal each other.

This, my friends, is the capacity to love.

At 8yrs old, I knew my whole family's names (both sides) and knew what towns they lived in even though I did not live there. I'm always amazed by people who characterize children as completely unable to think their way out of a paper bag.

Children in other parts of the world are often more advanced in terms of what they do day-to-day and the responsibilities they have. But they live in places where everyone knows everyone else, and where there are often no addresses, no phone numbers. It just isn't the same as you and I who grew up being encouraged to write our names and memorize our phone numbers and home addresses.

I didn't say I knew phone numbers and addresses. I said I knew names and cities.

This is exactly the same.
