'Nothing Wrong' With Calling Rihanna N-Word, Says Jackie Publisher Yves Gijrath

Publisher Says There Was 'Nothing Wrong' With Calling Rihanna The N-Word

Earlier this week, the Dutch fashion magazine, Jackie became embroiled in a major controversy when an article in their latest issue referred to the pop star Rihanna as "the ultimate n***abitch." The magazine's editor-in-chief, Eva Hoeke, issued an apology, and later resignation from the publication as a result of the backlash.

Despite Hoeke's apology, Jackie's publisher Yves Gijrath released a statement via the Dutch news site Villamedia saying that his publication has nothing to apologize for, and that the editor-in-chief's credibility was "undermined" by the way she worded her apology.

"[T]here is nothing wrong in the magazine," he said in a statement. "[Hoeke] presented [the offensive article] as a joke, but it most certainly was not a joke. It was an interpretation [of a fashion style] ... She should have said: 'we did not realize this interpretation is such a touchy subject. We never meant any harm and offer our sincere and upright apologies.'"

"But because of all the fuss, Eva started to wiggle in all directions, and therefore we have come to the conclusion her credibility has been undermined."

Gijrath also said that the magazine has no plans on printing a retraction of the issue and "will not be silenced, noting that; "people are totally off limits when calling both the magazine Jackie and Eva Hoeke racist. Jackie is even produced by an editorial staff that is of mixed origins."
