Newt Gingrich Fails To Qualify For Virginia GOP Primary Despite Residency, Compares Setback To Pearl Harbor [UPDATED]

First Posted: 12/24/2011 7:32 am Updated: 12/24/2011 6:25 pm

WASHINGTON - The Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday that GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich failed to amass the 10,000 signatures needed in order to secure a place on the ballot in the party's March 6th primary election. Gingrich isn't the first Republican presidential candidate who failed to qualify for the "Super Tuesday" primary contest - on Friday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry also failed to make the cut for the same reason. Rival candidates Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) qualified for the primary. On the Democratic side, President Barack Obama qualified earlier this year.

The failure is a particularly tough blow to Gingrich, who is a Virginia resident, having lived in the Washington suburb of McLean, Va. for more than a decade. Gingrich said earlier this week that he had reached the 10,000 signatures needed to appear on the ballot, but after a review of his 11,050 signatures, the Republican Party of Virginia announced in a tweet early Saturday that Gingrich "did not submit required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary."

A spokesman for Gingrich had yet to respond to an email early Saturday morning from The Huffington Post, but a Perry spokesman told NBC that their campaign would "closely review the facts and law to determine whether an appeal or challenge is warranted."

UPDATE [10:01 a.m. ET] - Early Saturday, Gingrich's campaign released the following statement from Campaign Director Michael Krull:

"Only a failed system excludes four out of the six major candidates seeking access to the ballot. Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates. We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice."

UPDATE [7:20 p.m. ET] - Less than 12 hours after the initial statement, Gingrich's presidential campaign was forced to shift strategy after learning that the state of Virginia forbids write-in ballots for primary contests. At the time of the statement, it appears Krull was unaware of the state's law.

In a message Krull posted on the campaign's Facebook page Saturday evening, Christmas Eve, he backed off the initial, and apparently illegal, plan, saying only that the campaign was "exploring alternative methods to compete in Virginia."

In a bizarre move, Krull went on to compare the Virginia ballot ruling to the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor - which cost more than 2,000 American lives - describing both as "unexpected setbacks." He also said that in order to re-group and re-focus, "we each need to spend the next 24 hours enjoying our families and friends as much as possible."

Read the whole statement:

By now you've likely heard that our effort to gain access to the primary ballot in Virginia was not successful. This was not due to a lack of effort by our volunteers, but the cumbersome process in Virginia.

We are exploring alternate methods to compete in Virginia - stay tuned.

Going forward, we will be as in-front of the process as possible and with the help of our grassroots volunteers we will make all other deadlines.

Newt and I have talked three or four times today and he stated that this is not catastrophic - we will continue to learn and grow. Remember that it was only a few months ago that pundits and the press declared us dead after the paid consultants left. They declared that the decision not to compete in the Ames Straw Poll would mean that Iowans would ignore us. Some will again state that this is fatal.

Newt and I agreed that the analogy is December 1941: We have experienced an unexpected set-back, but we will re-group and re-focus with increased determination, commitment and positive action. Throughout the next months there will be ups and downs; there will be successes and failures; there will be easy victories and difficult days - but in the end we will stand victorious.

To help achieve that outcome we each need to spend the next 24 hours enjoying our families and friends as much as possible. Enjoy their company. Be grateful for them. Gather strength from them. The promise of a better future for our family and friends is the reason we are committed to rebuilding the America we love.

May the spirit of the season fill each of you. Merry Christmas.

Michael Krull
National Campaign Director

Isn't it Newt's responsibility to make sure he got on the ballot? Then why is he saying the rules are inheriantly unfair? The guy is a career politican, don't tell me he doesn't know there are rules? Come now, that's all politics is a bunch of rules and hurdles that you have to jump over, it's the way Washington works and everything in life. Don't tell me he thinks the rules don't apply to him. Is he trying to create a backlash against Mitt for following the rules? What a cad that Newt is. No wonder why he is dangling that bait that he would put Palin on the ticket or get her a job, I can see exactly where this man is going. He thinks he can work it just like the way Palin worked it, anti-establishment this, anti-establishment that. It's a big crock. They both deserve each other, no wonder why he wants to give her a job.

The man is a liar. Gingrich got kicked out as speaker for ethics violations. This is the first time in history!
Zero credibility
Now he is trying to pass off phony names to qualify for the Virginia ballot!!!
He should be tarred and feathered.
How about the taxpayer bailout money he received from Fannie and Freddy?
Gingrich would have a better chance at running for president of Israel...

when Newt compared the consequences of his own incompetence with the Loss of lives, limbs, minds, property incurred by the Greatest Generation and their families after Pearl Harbor

He couldn't get 10K signatures from VA. Still he wants the Presidency ?
Leaveing the field now is better for him than finishing 3rd or 4th.

None of them qualifies to be on any ballot. They are all CLOWNS.

He isn't qualified to run anything but his mouth. We've got enough of that in washington. Go back to ga, cause va evidently doesn't think he's qualified either.

So much of a nerd and bloviator he forgot to gather enough signatures in the very state he calls home. Too busy hawking books and videos. Says to me he was after the dough all along, and just running as a serious incidentally. Is that the reason folks jumped that ship a while ago? Wthwht?

Running a presidential campaign is not Newt's strong suit. Soon enough though, he'll be back to doing what he's good at; buying jewelry, taking vacation cruises and writing alternate histories. He will not be writing them from the White House.

I guess he should have been working on his campaign rather than taking cruises in the Aegean with Callista.

He wants to run the country but can't even assemble a team to get him on the ballot in his home state. Just incredible. Not to mention they apparently filed false signatures. He is a legend in his own mind but not so much in anybody else's.

I don't believe he really wants to run the country. It probably surprised him as much as anyone else that he got his turn in the front seat of the clown car.

His New Hampshire staff resigned in mass because they did not believe he was serious. They clearly saw what we are only now seeing.

Soon Gingrich will be able to re-continue his book tour uninterrupted with the minutia of running an actual campaign for President. Personally I wouldn't even use his books as a table leveler or a door stop.

That's just too funny. Faved!

This is WAY too funny! I am VERY interested in finding out what happened to those 1,000+ signatures and why they were disqualified. I'm not buying that they were all write-ins. Looks like that voter suppression thing works both ways, huh?

Here's what no one on the Republican side will tell you. No one wants the Presidency. Now, they'll all say that Obama messed things up, but I think that most of these losers want to waltz into a perfect situation like Bush 43 did and sail right on through. Why do you think they fielded such a weak candidate in 2008 as well? No R candidate with a decent chance of willing wanted to touch that office with a 10' pole! They'd all be very happy to let Obama suffer through this whole recession, let him fix everything, and then run again in 2016.

That is why the so-called "A-team" all sat out. (Jeb Bush, Christie, Thune, Daniels, even Palin).

The only "serious" candidate is Romney and the Republican establishment is rallying around him, not because they want or expect to win, but they want to lose "respectfully" and think a "respectable" loss will preserve their House majority and chance of retaking the Senate.

The establishment fears that a landslide size loss with a nominee like Gingrich or Paul would cause the Republicans to lose the House, any chance of taking the Senate and scores of state legislative seats.

Gingrich has been running for the nomination for several months. If he failed to submit the required number of signatures in a timely manner, it can only be blamed on one person---President Obama. You all know that it can't be anyone else's fault. It can't be blamed on Newt's staff because he's in charge of them and the fault would lie squarely upon his shoulders. We can't have that! So, what's a RW'er to do? Blame it on President Obama. It has to be his fault. Let FOX know about it and they'll find a way to make it work for Newt, especially his buddy, Hannity. He always has well-edited videos on hand to prove whatever claim is necessary as long as it's a negative for the President.

He fails in so many ways. I wouldn't vote for him if he ran unopposed.

I got a laugh out of New t's rationalization, blame the system. well at least he can kid himself but not the rest of us. The continues on, comparing his fail grade to Pearl Harbor, Im laughing so hard, he can't be serious. Along with the other candidates, again, the Republicans even without Herman Can't, still come off as I posted weeks ago. Just win, anything said to win.

Instead of saying he made a mistake and the buck stops with him, he wants to blame the very system he once was and wants to be a part of again, bureaucracy. I am so sick of everyone saying washington is broken, no we keep sending immensely flawed people to washington to add to the chaos.
