Babysitter Michael Plumadore Allegedly Chopped Up Aliahna Lemmon With Hacksaw: Cops

TOM LoBIANCO and TOM COYNE   12/27/11 11:51 PM ET   AP

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — To assist her dying father, Tarah Souders made a choice: She moved her three young girls to a run-down trailer park in rural Indiana to help take care of him as his lungs rotted from emphysema.

She knew it could be dangerous. The park of about two dozen homes was teeming with convicted sex offenders, with one living at nearly every address. She worried about neighbors with sex offense records who had been helping her father get by, according to trailer park residents. And before she arrived, she even asked her father if her children could be at risk for abuse from two specific men – including a suspect now accused in her daughter's death.

"He said, `No. They will not touch your children. They're doing everything they're supposed to do,'" said Greg Shumaker, one of 15 convicted sex offenders who live at the park and the other man that Souders had inquired about.

Not long after they moved, police say, a horrific tragedy unfolded. Her 9-year-old daughter, Aliahna Lemmon, was brutally killed. Police say 39-year-old Michael Plumadore told investigators that he bludgeoned her to death last week with a brick, then dismembered her and hid her head, hands and feet at her grandfather's trailer before dumping the other remains elsewhere.

Shumaker said Aliahna's family moved there to help take care of 66-year-old James E. "Shorty" Lemmon, who also was a convicted sex offender and died Dec. 3. He said Lemmon was "getting old" and "had trouble breathing."

Shumaker said he introduced Plumadore to Lemmon shortly after Plumadore moved into the trailer park, and Plumadore moved in with Lemmon a few days later. Shumaker said he knew Lemmon because they were both sex offenders and were in jail together.

Sheriff's department spokesman Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel confirmed that Lemmon was a sex offender. Indiana Department of Correction records show he was convicted of child molesting in March 2006.

Paulette Hair, 45, a former manager at the trailer park who lives at a nearby trailer park, said she also knew Lemmon was a sex offender.

"He stayed out of everybody's way," she said. "Shorty couldn't take care of himself very well."

Shumaker said Plumadore briefly moved away, but returned when Souders asked him to care for her father.

A man who answered the door at Souders' home Tuesday afternoon referred all questions to the Allen County sheriff's department. The home was one of only a few at the trailer park – located off an expressway and across from an open field – with signs of children: A small bicycle, play car and car seat sat on the wooden porch connected to a long wooden ramp.

Aliahna and her two younger sisters were staying with Plumadore for about one week because their mother had been sick with the flu.

Richard Patee, 58, whose trailer is next to where Plumadore was living, said he didn't think it was odd that Aliahna's mother had him watching the girls for an extended period.

"They had known each other for somewhere of three to four years, I know that, and he took care of their grandfather," Patee said. "I didn't see any reason to question it at all."

Shumaker said it wasn't unusual for Plumadore to watch Souders' children "because the kids liked him." Souders and Aliahna were listed among nearly 600 friends on a Facebook page listed under Plumadore's name that said he was "Self Employed and Loving It!", and enjoyed fantasy novels.

According to the affidavit, Plumadore told police that after beating Aliahna to death on the front steps of the home in the early morning hours Thursday, he stuffed her body into trash bags and hid her in the freezer. He said he later cut up her body with a hacksaw and stuffed her remains into freezer bags.

The next morning, Plumadore made a trip to a convenience store to buy a cigar, according to surveillance video and The Journal Gazette.

Police said Plumadore told them he had hidden Aliahna's head, feet and hands at the trailer and discarded her other remains at a nearby business. Police obtained a warrant to search the trailer on Monday and found the body parts.

Authorities didn't say Tuesday why Plumadore killed the child, but Sheriff Ken Fries said investigators suspected Plumadore was involved since soon after she was reported missing Friday night because of inconsistencies in his story that the girl had vanished while he went to a store that morning.

"Things that were said in 29 years of doing this that just didn't make sense," Fries said during a Tuesday news conference. "We needed to get him to talk."

A judge ordered Plumadore held without bail or bond at an initial hearing Tuesday, Tinkel said. He has yet to be formally charged in Aliahna's death.

Mike McAlexander, the Allen County chief deputy prosecutor, wouldn't say whether anyone else was suspected of being involved and said "nothing has been ruled out."

"How could you live?" asked Hair. "How could you sit in that trailer, knowing what you did, knowing what's in your household when everybody is out there in the cold and the rain praying to God that she comes home safely and you're sitting there."

A state website shows that 15 registered sex offenders live in the park that numbers about two dozen homes. Self-identified sex offenders living at the trailer park said Tuesday that they were given maps by the Indiana Department of Corrections and a local mission showing them where it was OK to live. The aerial maps show areas legally away from schools and daycare centers and help guide offenders when they are released from prison to new homes.

Plumadore is not on Indiana's registered sex offenders list. He has a criminal record in Florida and North Carolina that includes convictions for trespassing and assault, and an Indiana conviction for forgery.

I'm just not understanding all of these stories about people killing children and especially in these vicious ways lately. Even worse, it seems to be a family member or friend of the victim, I can't imagine the horror a child feels when they know that someone is going to kill them, Unimaginable.

I see a lot of comments regarding the manner in which this article was written, as well of a lot of people defending the sex offenders.

Interesting that nobody is calling out the mother for knowingly bringing her kids into a trailer park full of diddlers. Great decision, mom.

This little girl was abused in Iowa in 2010 by a man who fondled her, yet the mother moved into a sexual den of perverts anyway. I don't believe the mother is that ignorant of what sexual abuse is.
09:46 AM on 12/31/2011
Actually, this little girl statistically was the typical molest victim. Probably tartgeted by this guy for that reason. No father, less attentive mother, she is the type of child Plumadore would target, if that was his intent, statistically speaking that is.

To all who have shown a serious interest in this case, and this debate. What this guy did was an unspeakable horror and a nightmare. It's time to start tracking dangerous criminals of all kinds, and stop looking the other way just because the criminal isn't a sex offender!
We need new laws that allow us to track ALL CRIMINALS.
It works...now let it work for all dangerous felons!

Track them with a Nikkon scope, with a BMG under it.
11:22 AM on 12/30/2011
We need to stop ignoring all the Criminals and dangerous felons, pass laws that require all criminals to register. that way the Mom would of known this guy was dangerous. Why are we protecting dangerous criminals by allowing them to operate freely and anonymously? We register and track sex offenders, yet they had nothing to do with this crime, why are we blaming everyone but the killer?
Demand that all criminals be required to register and not live near schools and playgrounds. Stop letting gang bangers and drug dealers to operate freely!

The man who allegedly killed and dismembered a 9-year-old Fort Wayne girl was accused of stalking and sexually harassing a 13-year-old girl while living in Iowa last year, but the complaint against him was dismissed, according to court documents.

The woman said Plumadore was harassing her daughter by “stalking her, sending her explicit sexual text messages and photographs,” according to the documents. The girl's mother also said he sent pictures of his genitals and messages telling the girl he “wanted to get her pregnant

Shushmouf: Here is another link you will say you can't open like the last one I posted - others had no problem opening it up. Why are you so sure he isn't a sex offender - just because they haven't uncovered the whole story yet. I say you are way off base with this guy.

So you are saying we SHOULD allow all dangerous criminals to maim and kill without tracking them? As long as they didnt kiss thier victim first?

This "mother" was not raised correctly. Apparently she was never put before her parents and they obviously did not care about her well-being as a person and then she does the same to her children. Learned behavior. Selfish behavior.

Expecting a sex offender to stop offending is like expecting Colonel Sanders to change his secret recipe.
09:06 AM on 12/30/2011
Fact is only a very small % of sex offenders ever committ anouther sex offense. They may commit other crimes, like stealing to eat, but rarely do they ever commit another sexual offense. When they do commit a second one, it's national news so everyone hears it.
Gang bangers and Crack heads committ thier crimes over and over.
Why are you posting this here? the killer was not a sex offender, even though 15 sex offenders lived there, not one of them hurt this child. maybe you couldn't find a story about a sex offender committing a sex crime? Expecting people to stop blaming sex offenders for this girls brutal murder, now thats not something thats likely to change. Blame everyone EXCEPT the killer. Now thats stupid

You are so on point. And it is good that we recognize this. And these sex offenders have proven they are not the bad people and I pray they keep up the good work...Even the vilest of criminals deserve a second chance as long as they are working to prove they are done with their old ways.

Um, the killer WAS a sex offender, just not registered. Goes to show that Megan's Law doesn't always work. You think you know where the sex offenders are, but if they don't register, you'll never know. That's why it's best to be safe around EVERYONE, regardless of their past crimes.

who cares about the mother. This is about children. THe mother should be smacked for knowingly bringing children into that environment. Did you read the article? THis wasn't the first time something has happened to her kids.

All my life I believed yellow journalism had died the first part of the twentieth century but obviously I was wrong. I don't know whether to be more appalled with the Huffington Post or its readers. This is not a real news article but a propaganda piece. The article, or perhaps “story” would be a better referent, is not really about a child being brutally murdered but rather a piece designed to inspire hatred of sex offenders. Since the perpetrator of the murder was not a sex offender nor had the child been sexually assaulted or abused, there was no reason to mention sex offenders at all if this had been a real news story about a murder. The Post, however, printed it probably with the hope that such sensationalism would increase revenue. Its mindless readers no doubt did just that, somehow managing to blame sex offenders for the crime although no sex offender had any part in it.
The post's mindless readers have swallowed to much of the drivel businesses such as the Post and now whole heartedly believe the phony statistics about sex offenders. Research would show them that sex offenders are one of the groups least likely to re-offend. If they are looking for someone who WILL re-offend, they should look for a drug offender. Don't take my word for it though, do your own research. But please, start with reliable sources like the department of corrections rather than a paper like the Post.

gnarly dude, this is not the only one that has put this story out like this. I see it on other websites and on tv. Everytime a child goes missing, the first group that is accused it the sex offenders who live in the neighborhood, apartment complex, trailer park, etc. What would be better is if they said the following "EVERYBODY IS A SUSPECT." How many times have we seen that the person who commits the crime comes from two primary groups, family or friends of family. I have noticed how quick the public jumped on the sex offender angle once again instead of the crime itself and then you find out that the friend of the family committed the crime and instead of the sex offender talk dying down, it moves over into well we know he is a sex offender. How in the hell do you know? It went from the guy had felonies (which are not of a sexual nature) to I know he is a rapist and he did something to this child. Then Nancy Grace screams out that I know he did something and the sheeple are quick to respond. There is no excuse for what he did, but I hate it when folks are labeled for things that they may not have done. This is why folks should wait for the evidence.

so basically, you're an offender, and you're offended?
12:09 AM on 12/30/2011
A mother's first priority is to her CHILDREN. If the sick, old perverted grandfather couldn't leave his den of like-branded offenders to go live with his daughter, she should have arranged some other care. A real MOTHER doesn't put her children in harm's way, let alone leave them as bait for monsters!! Anyone who allowed this should be brought up on charges!!! A mother's first priority and responsibility is to her CHILDREN! There are no exceptions!
