Ben Affleck In 'Argo': Tony Mendez & The CIA's Iran Hostage Story (PHOTO)

Try to wrap your head around this: A movie is being made about the story of a fake movie studio producing a fake movie with a fake crew, all concocted to spring US diplomats out of imprisonment from a hostile government. If it sounds a bit confusing, that's the point; this is real CIA business we're talking about here.

The first photo of Ben Affleck in his next directorial feature, "Argo," has been released by Warner Bros., the actual studio putting out this actual feature. The film features the story of the unusual CIA plot to free hostages taken by the Iranian government in 1979: spymaster Tony Mendez created the fake "Studio Six," with Hollywood offices and employees and the works, in order to pitch to the Iranians that the diplomats they had taken hostage were actually just Canadian film workers out on location.

The plan, Mendez wrote in his 2000 memoir, "The Master of Disguise," worked in part out of offices that had just been vacated by Michael Douglas's film "China Syndrome," which, incidentally, is a thriller about a coverup (Jack Lemon & Jane Fonda would receive a Oscar nominations for the film).

Mendez explains in his book that he and his colleague on the mission, Hollywood makeup artist and CIA assistant Jerome Calloway, went through real movie scripts to find the perfect film that their Studio Six would "make." As Mendez told and audience in LA in 2006, their fake studio ran so much like a real studio in Hollywood, with trade ads and the works, they began getting sent real scripts from real screenwriters.

"By the time we closed Studio Six Productions," he said at the event, "we had 26 scripts, one of them from [Steven] Spielberg."

Calloway eventually chose a script that Mendez said was "a little too evocative of 'The Exorcist' for his taste, but which combined mystical elements with nonspecific Middle Eastern locations."

In seeking to name the film, they ended up choosing the punchline from one of their favorite knock knock jokes, ending up on "Argo." Which means that thanks to the Affleck movie about the plot that involved a fake movie called "Argo," now "Argo" is actually the name of a real film, all these years later.

This "Argo," directed and starring Ben Affleck as Mendez, features some other big Hollywood stars, including Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman and Kyle Chandler. It hits theaters in September. For more on the film, check out the official synopsis sent out when production began in September.

Is the movie going to explain the fact that the embassy was used to spy on Iranians, or the fact that the US was trying to instigate instability just as it did when they had Mossadegh replaced by the Shah?

Newsflash. Every embassy on the planet is used to spy on their host nation. In addition, the United States absolutely had an interest in making sure fundamentalists did not take over Iran. It is a pity they failed since we are still paying the price for that little revolution.

That's true, but not in the extremes the CIA has done i.e. distributing anti-Khomeini leaflets, spreading propaganda, funding terror groups.

Also, the US wanted to replace Mossadegh because they wanted a buffer between them and the Soviet Union.

By the way, Mossadegh attempted to establish a dictatorship and was removed from power with help from Western powers. Do you have a problem with that?

It sounds interesting, but I wonder if it doesn't better lend itself to a novel.  I tried to watch Syriana 4 times and never got through it in one sitting.

It's already a novel. As listed below in the wikipedia link

(a) Ben Affleck is actually a rather good director and he does his best acting when he directs himself so I will be there when it comes out.

(b) 70's Ben Affleck looks a little bit like Vincent Cassel, oddly enough.

I hear the Pentagon footed a chunk of the bill for the 'Battleship' movie. I think they had a hand in 'Iron Man' too. What's the odds that the Pentagon helped a bit with funding for a "lets remember the Iran hostage crisis" movie?

Hear that? It is the helocopters out to get you. Stay very still. The microchip they put in your molar does not transmit well when you are stationary.

During that crisis, the Canada embassy, in Iran, did a better job faking Canadian passports than the CIA did, and freed more hostages to boot
09:15 AM on 12/28/2011
Actually you may want to do some reading. The Canadians couldn't fake the passports due to Canadian law.

They were real passports the CIA did the finishing touches.

"As a specialist in forgery and counterfeiting, Mendez arrived with his watercolor kit and tools. But the rest of the exfiltration supplies had been sent ahead through diplomatic pouch and awaited him at the Canadian embassy. Mendez included everything he could think of: health cards and driver's licenses, maple leaf pins, receipts from restaurants in Toronto and Montreal, the Studio Six business cards, a lens for the cinematographer, and the Argo production materials. The six passports were what Mendez called "real fakes": genuine documents that the Canadian government prepared for the Holly wood aliases devised by the CIA. Acquiring those passports had been a coup for Mendez; Canadian law prohibits such falsification, but the country's parliament held an emergency secret session, the first since World War II, to make an exception. Mendez rendez voused with ambassador Ken Taylor in his office, retrieved the Canadian passports, and imprinted them with Iranian visas. His ink pad was dry from the trip, so he wet it with some of the ambassador's scotch and carefully entered dates indicating that the six members of the film crew had arrived in Iran the day before."

So the CIA did indeed fabricate the passports.

I like Ben Affleck - when he gets his hands on something good, he's very good. Sounds like they're going to Wag the Dog a bit. Hopefully, the studio will let them do it the way they want.

Looking forward to seeing this movie. If Ben is directing and starring in it, it will be good. It being a true story is just icing on the cake. No one in this country knew this was going on at the time.

Ben Afleck had to morph himself into Hans Gruber from Die Hard for this role.
