Denny's Worst Menu Items: Steak And Potatoes Sandwich, Fried Cheese Melt, Bacon Sundae & More

First Posted: 12/28/11 12:45 PM ET   Updated: 12/31/11 11:25 AM ET

Denny's has certainly awarded itself a bad reputation when it comes to culinary creations. From the recently released Mac And Cheese Big Daddy Patty Melt -- which fit a burger patty as well as a serving of mac and cheese inside two pieces of bread -- to last year's Fried Cheese Melt Sandwich -- a grilled cheese stuffed with fried mozzarella sticks -- you can always count on Denny's to release a new menu item that has the power to make your stomach turn before sampling.

While you might never enter a Denny's in the revealing light of day, most of us have dined at this establishment at least once (if not countless times) long after twilight, as a way to top off the night. At that hour, these types of dishes are just what we crave. Denny's is aware of its place in the culinary world, and has even created the All Nighter menu especially for these outings. After all, its prime customer base is not the senior, but the 18-24 year old.

You have to hand it to Denny's. The company sure is inventive with its creations -- never ceasing to roll out new menu gimmicks. Some of its most notable menus include Baconalia which celebrated the country's bacon craze, Let's Get Cheesy! which clearly featured a lot of American cheese, and the Rockstar menu which called upon popular rock groups to create dishes inspired by their band. If there is one thing to be learned from Denny's, it is that creativity and perseverance might not bring you to excellence, but it will sure get you noticed.

While these menus are no longer featured at Denny's, you can have faith that the company will surely release equally notable items soon.

What are some of your most notable Denny's experiences?

Everything in moderation. If you want to enjoy a 1,000-calorie cheeseburger with all the trimmings, I say go for it. Just don't do it more than once a month, and balance it out by eating healthy, nutritious meals the majority of the time. I don't deny myself unhealthy treats, but I treat them as that: treats, not an everyday thing.

I don't agree with the government/whoever else trying to force people to eat certain foods, but I am an advocate of personal responsibility.

Some of these menu items may be a little . . . um . . . different. But they're certainly no more "weird" than some of the offerings of those "molecular gastronomy" restaurants that foodies often fawn over. Put fries on a burger instead of on the side? Oh, the horror! Make a foam out of green tea, or "caviar" out of almost anything BUT fish eggs? Sure, why not? LOL!!

Another thing: I think a lot of these dishes wouldn't seem quite so horrifying if you would imagine them being split between two or three people (or getting half of it "to go"). Because some of those dishes seem like an AWFUL lot of food for just one person - especially for the late-night hard-core partiers who may have ALREADY gotten their day's worth of calories from beer and mixed drinks alone! (at least if they haven't offered them back up at the porcelain altar, that is).

If you stick to the tried and true Denny's can always be counted on to give an average meal at a fair price. It is when you go out on the limb you might not like what you get. I found this to be the same with other restaurants also, so it's all not all just bash Dennys as this article implies..

My wife and I are not big on fast food. A while back we visited a Denny's when they were pushing a breakfast special and that is what we ordered assuming it would be served in short order. Forty five minutes later all we had been served was the coffee. We left. Recently a cousin did me a favor and I told him I'd buy him breakfast. He and his girl friend love Denny's, eat there several times a week. I ordered a western omelet. After a fairly long wait I was served a mushroom omelet. That will be my last visit to any Denny's.

As far as these food items go....might as well toss them straight into the toidy! They will get there soon enough and will save you the time of chewing it up first!
