The Basics
is a smaller mountain on the eastern slopes of California's Sierra Nevada range in June Lake, just 20 minutes from its legal owner, the much larger
. June's main advantage stems from Mammoth drawing large crowds. This allows a more spacious skiing environment on the slopes of June. Skiers can drive the approximately six hours from Los Angeles to June Mountain, or they can fly into the Mammoth/Yosemite airport, about 70 minutes away, via Alaska Airlines, United Airlines and Horizon Air.
The Mountain
June Mountain averages
over the course of the annual December to April season. The summit reaches 10,090 feet, with a vertical rise from base to summit of 2,590 feet. The resort has a second peak of 10,040 feet named Rainbow Summit. Although the two summits on June Mountain are more than 1,000 feet below Mammoth Mountain, June still enjoys fine, powdery snow throughout the season. Its longest run tops out at two miles. Snowmaking equipment is available at June Mountain but is rarely used.

35 named trails spread out over more than 500 skiable acres. The mountain is serviced by seven chair lifts, consisting of two quads, four doubles and one carpet. The terrain is more readily handled by novice skiers than many other resorts, with 35 percent of runs labeled for beginners, 45 percent for skiers of intermediate ability and 20 percent for expert or advanced skiers. June Mountain was one of the first ski resorts in the nation to offer snowboarding to visitors and still maintains a
, with runs catering to snowboarders of all abilities. The mountain also offers

As a smaller, lesser-known mountain, June Mountain tends to draw neither the celebrity crowd nor the most prestigious world ski and snowboard competitions. However, June Mountain did play host to the 2006 California Winter Games and the 2006 Ski Mountaineering Race Series. June also serves as an

Prices for
lift tickets at June Mountain can vary based on the type of ticket purchased, the season and the method of purchase. Typical adult one-day lift tickets cost $72, but discounts are offered for multi-day or online purchases. An early season discounted rate of just $30 may apply when the mountain is newly opened, but not all runs may be available. Season passes for June Mountain range from $828 to $120.
