Kennedy Center Honors 2011: Anne Hathaway Does Split During Meryl Streep Tribute (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/28/11 08:38 AM ET Updated: 12/28/11 09:18 AM ET

Legendary film actress Meryl Streep was celebrated at the "34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors" in a star-studded tribute that aired Tuesday night on CBS. In one of the evening's most lively moments, Streep's "Devil Wears Prada" co-stars, led by Anne Hathaway, sang "She's Me Pal" as a tribute to Streep. Hathaway displayed the depth of her friendship, vocal chops and impressive flexibility by dropping into a split mid-way through the routine.

As Streep, who was smiling widely and was at times emotional throughout the evening, looked on from the balcony, Hathaway sang the line, "Her heart is as big as a ham," and dropped to the floor in a split. Her form was perfect, albeit painful-looking, and after a few seconds in the pose she jokingly motioned for help from Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt. After picking her up by her arms, they joined the actress, who's been compared to a young Streep, for a toast during the song's chorus. As the group sang the refrain, "She's me pal," they raised their drinks to Streep, saluting her decades of excellence in film and considerable contributions to cinematic culture.

Really?? The "split" moment? Anne Hathaway and friends were awesome on yet another fabulous Kennedy Center Honors, but did you miss the extraordinary finale tribute to Yo-Yo Ma? The baseball bleacher-enhanced tribute to Neil Diamond? The brilliant clips of Sonny Rollins, the humor of Stephen Colbert, the adjective-defying performances of Glenn Close (Hathaway wasn't the only one crying in joy), Audra McDonald, Jennifer Nettles, Lionel Richie? -- Well, there's no way to put it right how much talent was contained in that one show. If only the Grammy and other organizations could put together a show a tenth as beautiful and inspiring. Next time, WATCH IT!

I think this is the song Hathaway sang with revised lyrics. It's actually titled "She's My Mom" but that wouldn't have worked for the tribute to Streep. Tony Bennett has a recording of it. This may not appear in paragraphs as I can't get them to post much any more at HP. I've got one real friend more than a friend I find The way I feel friend, she's all of this heart of mine I'm all for her I know she'll always be for me I'm on my way friend, I'm going home to see My mom, I love her My mom, you'd love her Who wouldn't love her, my mom That sweet somebody, thinks I'm somebody My pal, my buddy, my mom Anything I do she's my only inspiration Anytime I'm blue she's my only consolation As years come on her I gaze upon her She's my Madonna My mom My pal, my buddy, my mom Yes, anything I do she's my only inspiration Anytime I'm blue she's my only consolation As years come on her I gaze upon her She's my Madonna My mom

You have to put at least 3 or 4 spaces to get them and then it doesn't always work.  Have you been getting those blank things?

That was a smashing routine Hathaway did. Really good. I wonder what happened to that Judy Garland film bio she was supposed to do.

I enjoyed both Anne Hathaway's performance and the medley performed by Raphael Saadiq.

Why Hathaway isn't on Broadway doing musicals is beyond me -- she has the voice and oversized personality to become a legend, a la Carol Channing or Bernadette Peters.

I love the Kennedy Center Honors. Of all the awards shows it's the most dignified and classiest and this year's program was no exception. The KCH isn't nearly as superficial as other awards shows because their honoring individuals who has given us great achievement over a long period of time that has left a profound impact on the American culture. That's not to say that Kennedy Center hasn't made so odd, questionable choices over the years. They have indeed!! But any ceremony that could honor a diverse group of artisans like George Balachine, Leonard Bernstein, Leontyne Price, Martha Graham, Isaac Stern, Stephen Sondheim, Dizzy Gillespie, Tennessee Williams and in the same breath can also honor Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Mel Brooks, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Elton John, and Carol Burnett, sometimes in the same evening and never once look foolish, is an award show of great prestige.

I was surprised Barbara Cook was selected for the Kennedy Center honor but not surprised she got it. I've seen that clip of her teaching young singers voice etc before so her contributions have reached out beyond her singing on stage. I remember when I lived for a short time in Iowa in the 8o's and her special was shown on the local PBS channel. It was a fund raising event for PBS and after the show the idiot hick who was asking for money said, Well, that was hmmm ... Barbara Cook. Whoever she is."

The whole tribute, to Sonny Rollins, Neil Diamond, Barbara Cook, Yo Yo Ma and Meryl was great. Couldn't believe the split, though. Anne still surprises.

When has Anne Hathaway been compared to a "young Meryl Streep"? I don't think so.

LOVE Streep (one of my all-time faves, behind Hepburn (Kate) and Hepburn (Audrey) and Davis (Bette, duh), love Hathaway and Klein, ADORE Tucci, and just gotta love and respect the POO out out of a chick who will do the splits in an evening gown!

While singing! And singing WELL!

Excellent clip, kudos :)
