Michele Bachmann's Iowa Chairman Kent Sorenson Abandons Her For Ron Paul

First Posted: 12/28/2011 8:26 pm Updated: 12/29/2011 7:38 am

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) accused her former Iowa campaign chairman of accepting money to jump ship to support Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) on Wednesday, issuing a terse statement within two hours of his announcement.

Kent Sorenson, the Iowa state senator who served in the Bachmann campaign, denied the allegations and said he accepted no money for his endorsement. Sorenson is "leaving his post as Iowa chairman for U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s presidential campaign here," according to a statement from the Paul campaign. "The resignation and endorsement take effect immediately."

Sorenson said he did not tell the Bachmann campaign before he announced his endorsement of Paul, and appeared at one of her events earlier on Wednesday. He told HuffPost late Wednesday that his decision was made only 10 minutes before he took the stage at a Paul rally in Des Moines to say he would support Paul instead of Bachmann.

He said he probably would not have supported Bachmann in the first place had Paul been in the race when she first announced her candidacy.

Bachmann's campaign fired back after the announcement, saying it was an attempt to "throw cold water on our growing momentum."

"Kent Sorenson personally told me he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign," Bachmann said in a statement. "Kent campaigned with us earlier this afternoon and went immediately afterward to a Ron Paul event and announced he is changing teams. Kent said to me yesterday that 'everyone sells out in Iowa, why shouldn't I,' then he told me he would stay with our campaign. The Ron Paul campaign has to answer for its actions."

Sorenson said he had only one conversation with Bachmann on Wednesday. She said "Hi, Kent," and he replied "Hi, Michele," he recounted.

"If they want to resort to these type of desperate attacks, that's fine," Sorenson said. "I believe that my character stands for itself."

He declined to say whether Bachmann's campaign is in trouble, saying she would have to answer for that. But he said she has no chance of winning in Iowa. He had referred earlier in his statement to the need for conservatives to defeat fellow Republican candidates Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.).

"There is a clear top tier in the race for the Republican nomination for President, both here in Iowa and nationally. Ron Paul is easily the most conservative of this group," Sorenson said in his statement.

He later told HuffPost Wednesday, "She is not in the top tier."

"She is not in a position to beat Mitt Romney. We are. ... She is not a direct threat to the Ron Paul campaign, so I have no idea why she would say that."

But he later added, "Bachmann can't win Iowa."

The loss of the Iowa legislator deals a significant blow to Bachmann's campaign. Sorenson is a Tea Party firebrand who was elected to the Iowa state senate in January after only one term in the state legislature. He owns a cleaning company and is father to six children. His decision to support Bachmann earlier this year was a big pickup for the congresswoman from Minnesota.

But Bachmann has steadily fallen in the polls every since winning the Ames Straw Poll in August. Her slide began when Texas Gov. Rick Perry entered the race and she has never recovered. Sorenson made clear that this was why he was abandoning her for Paul. For Bachmann, it is a damaging blow as she attempts to make her way from the rear of the pack back into contention, with precious little time to do so before Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses.

Sorenson acknowledged that his jumping ship from Bachmann's campaign might reflect badly on him, but attempted to put the blame for that on others.

"With the entire Republican establishment intent on smearing Ron Paul and his dedicated supporters, I understand this decision could impact the way people see me and my entire political career. But this is the right decision, and one in which I proudly stand behind," Sorenson said.

He called his choice to leave Bachmann "one of the most difficult I have made in my life."

"But given what's at stake for our country, I have decided I must take this action," Sorenson said.

The Bachmann campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

This story has been updated to reflect comments from Kent Sorenson and Rep. Michele Bachmann's response to his endorsement of Rep. Ron Paul.

I think she is a horrible demaguoge but I have a little more respect for her. At least she tried putting up a serious campaign and got bookish about the issues, even if her knowledge of American history is, well, silly. Yet, unlike Perry or Mr. 999 who thought they'd sail into the presidency on charisma or homegrown charm alone, she at least TRIED to be a serious candidate.

Oh, but it is so sweet to see her as the last clown to leave the crowded little car.

Book sales must be down and the promises for more easy money for this absurd candidate must finally be disappearing. I've never seen America or even the media so preoccupied with such inept and vacuous candidates as with this campaign's republican field.

I thought that I would actually try to post here for starters on why this happened between Sorenson and Bachmann but the post always disappears in this position because it does not automatically post my badge as it should. You ask me to Edit my micro-bio that is empty (because I have no idea where that is located around here). And I have lost a succulent post on why this mistake occurred to lone woman on the totem pole.

J M Brodie, Sorenson was right. Michele Bachmann got where she is by trying to compete with Sarah Palin but, Thomas Wolfe wasn't wrong when he wrote,"You can't go back home again".
This was what was going on at the time of the Giffords' shooting. After which Obama suggesting that when they meet for a State of the Union Message that everybody sit where they want no matter whether Left or Right in the Congress, This was a major improvement over the unpolitic behavior of Republican elements at earlier addresses, But Michele B. was back-stage trying to get a video camera working because, as they say in Iowa, she was all "gussied up". It turned out that she had a sugar daddy contributing to her campaign; he had taken "W." at his word that the Republicans ought to get ahold of as many TV outlets and Radio Stations in their area of the country to control "propaganda". It turns out Bachmann is not her own person anymore than Palin who took "Oil money" and then had the slip of the tongue to talk about getting "caught in the cross-hairs" at the time of the Giffords' shooting in Arizona. Being the lone woman on that stage full of Male Republicans doesn't help. It makes Bachmann look like a midget.

"He called his choice to leave Bachmann "one of the most difficult I have made in my life."

That's because she handcuffed him to the bed. (Bidah-BOOM)

But seriously ladies and germs, don't you think Michelle should pull out all the stops in Iowa? What does she have to loose? If her numbers were any lower there'd be a wino sleeping on top of them. (Bidah-BOOM) She should start wearing leather jackets and talk about shooting critters that can't defend themselves?

Yes, fellow Huffposters, you heard it here first. I believe Michelle Bachmann should do......

A Full Palin!

Rock the Iowa vote with lots of leather, sly hints that she might, maybe, when her eyes are closed, enjoy sex, and instead of making s@%t up when someone asks a question, just say it loud and say it proud ..."I don't know what the hell you're talking about!!!"

"Econ-o-mee? Huh? Four-ran-pol-oo-cee? The hell's that?.

Bail out Wall Street again? Oh...Hell Yeah! I got that written on the palm on my right, no..left...um, hold on, yeah...right hand!"

You can do it Michelle And we are ALL behind you...Way behind you.

@ EdwardGoodwin,
I think that is "Bada-BOOM". And you are talking about that Red Leather-jacket
that John McCain's gofers bought for her to match the red high heels in the makeover because Sarah had been caught at a Wasilla supermarket in a pair of Mukluks and a cotton skirt (may have been pink although that could have been the baby's bunting of the youngest baby she was holding while shopping wearing an anorak and gossiping with a neighbor). That WAS photo - graphed. Hip to her ways, McCain gofers ran out to reclaim the wardrobe before she eased out
of New York, talking to some Middle-eastern representative at the United Nations, dashed into some purveyor of more leather goods and charged luggage to the account, stuffed the ward - robe into the bags and flew out of Manhattan before they could salvage the take. How's that for
"Bada-Boom"?

Bachman is a self centered woman trying to climb the ladder. She might accomplish that in the corporate world but has no chance of doing it in politics. When I first began hearing her as a candidate for the republican nomination for their presidential candidate I was immediately turned off. The woman in my opinion is nuts. I can't understand why anyone would support her. I like some things about Ron Paul but he is far too radical in some areas. The Iowa caucas will end Bachman's run and if she does stray in the race she is wasting a lot of time and money. She will also see her supporters leave the fold. There is no one in the republican cast who I would vote for and the same goes for the democrat's candidate. I will probably again vote for a third party candidate.

Lucky you, some Republican states, when you are cajoled to move into one of them from a higher life style or civilization on this planet, do not give you a third option.

They want to know if you are a Democrat up front. This makes their work easier if they want to scratch you from the rolls. They don't condone other parties. You have only the choice of being in or out. This is why I always voted for the Republican Senator in the Philadelphia area for being so urbane and Jewish which made him equal to a Progressive, although I am a Pennsylvania Democrat who had to wait for another Democratic Senator to show up before I had anyone else to vote for beyond Arlen Spector whom MSNBC thank goodness gave Arlen a hand last night, as he did stand up comedy in a Philadelphia Comedy Club and "killed" the house.

This took me back to the days of George Burns. There is life in the old dog yet. Loved it.
