'Smash': Katharine McPhee & Megan Hilty Sing Rihanna's 'Cheers (I'll Drink To That)' (VIDEO)

We're just weeks away from the debut of "Smash," NBC's highly-anticipated musical drama from Steven Spielberg, and new bits of pieces are starting to roll out.

In this behind-the-scenes video from Playbill.com, you can see (and hear) series stars Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty sing Rihanna's song, "Cheers (I'll Drink To That)" in New York City's Times Square.

"Smash," which also stars Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston, follows the creation of a Broadway musical, "Marilyn," based on the life of film legend Marilyn Monroe. Theater and TV veteran Theresa Rebeck ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent") and Broadway and film producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Chicago," "How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying") are helping steer the ship that could be the big hit NBC needs.

"'Glee' hast to get a lot of credit," Zadan says in the video. "Because if it wasn't for 'Glee,' it wouldn't have broken that ground. They opened the door for us. The great thing is we're not copying 'Glee,' we're not like 'Glee,' but we're grateful to 'Glee' for giving us the opportunity to do our show."

Is there an opportunity for the show's fictional "Marilyn" to make it to the real-life Great White Way? Possibly, if "Smash" is a hit. According to New York Magazine, Steven Spielberg got the ball rolling by calling NBC's Bob Greenblatt -- the chief of Showtime at the time -- to discuss his original "Smash" idea. Initially, Spielberg thought each season would feature the creation of a musical, and if the show was a success and the fictional production was deemed stageworthy, then the production could head to Broadway with Spielberg's help. Now that "Smash" is at NBC, the one-show-a-season format is out. But if the series makes it to a second season, "Marilyn" would open during it and the fictional players would start work on a new musical.
