Foods So Spicy You Need A Waiver

Posted: 12/28/11 08:15 AM ET

There are two kinds of spicy foods: the kind people eat for pleasure, because the heat makes the food taste good, and the kind that people can really only eat because they are a little bit masochistic. In the slideshow below, HuffPost Food has collected examples of extremely spicy food, from hamburgers to sushi, in which the restaurants all require a waiver before you can chow down. Why a waiver? Well the restaurant doesn't want to be held responsible for any health problems that may arise from eating these extremely hot creations (and, it makes some great publicity). But if you're one of the brave ones that think that potential digestive issues, massive sweating and general discomfort sounds fun, then be our guest. Just don't say the restaurant didn't warn you.

Check out some spicy foods that require a waiver below:

Sauces are supposed to complement a dish, not obliteerate the basic flavors. If all you want it hot, then forget he dish and just grab the bowl or bottle of sauce and have at it. Before you jump all over this comment - I love hot sauces and salsas and mustards and BBQ sauce - even put jalapenos in my black-eyed peas and ham hocks for New Year's Day and add the sauces and salsa to almost everything.

I tend to agree with you. I like heat, but flavor is paramount. On the other hand, I'm told that eating really, really hot things is akin to taking a drug (hallucinations even). I'm not inclined to try any dish because of its heat.

I've reached the point where nothing seems to phase me. There was a time when I could order Thai or Indian food that was truly spicy. Nowadays, if I need a hardcore spicy fix I need to use chili extract.

Ever since I learned that there are folks genetically immune to the heat of capsaicin, I no longer see any point to showing off just how hot you can stand your chile/curry/etc.

spicy or just painful with a boring taste?

I don't think you can fairly call ultra-spicy foods boring. The endorphins alone can give you a buzz. And spicy food can be addicting. I know I'm hooked.

there is a certain level of spice where taste just becomes pain and inflamation.

I was pleasantly surprised by how decent the taste of the Phaal was when I did the Phaal Challenge. However, the portion was large and also acidic, due to the vinegar, (a la modern vindaloo) so that made the digestion a bit uncomfortable.

I LOVE spicy food. I hold Tobasco in contempt. That's just red vinegar sauce, to me. If you truly like hot sauce, look for El Yucateca which is made with habaneros and has a really good flavor to boot. My absolute favorite sauce of all time is Srichacha. Also known as rooster sauce. While not the spiciest, I'm in love with the sweet/garlic taste.

If you like Sriracha, you absolutely must try sambal ulek. It's Sriracha's indonesian cousin and in my opinion much spicier and tastier.

I have tried it. It's at every table in a decent pho joint. I like to mix those 2 along with teriyaki and use the resulting goodness as a spring roll dipping sauce.

Both are delish. I really do love the Asian hot sauces. Lots of garlic and good flavour to go along with the burn.

when I was young and dumb I would try things like that. The best spicy food I ever had was at a Sri Lankan place in Minneapolis years ago, it was their curry, hot yes, but not the insane heat that obliterates everything. After a 5 to 10 seconds the heat went away, very good and tasty. They also had a great desert, a wood apple cream, interesting and worth a second try

LOVE habaneros - friends send me a basket of habanero sauces for Christmas every year - salsa, sauce, BBQ sauce, mustard - but I do not use them for visitors! Have been known to take my own sauce to a restaurant that has nothing more than Tabasco sauce - which is good, but Tapatio is better.

I like spicy that produces just a moderate amount of sweat across my brow. If I'm sweating like I'm in a sauna it is way to hot and not at all enjoyable for me so all of these look like a pass.

Ok, as someone who is always chided for putting jalapeños in virtually every meal, I have now placed every one of the above-mentioned joints (and some of the places mentioned in the comments -- thank you!) on my Bucket List!!!

there's this place in Bellevue, WA called Dixie's that has BBQ. they have a condiment called "The Man".... the co-owner used to make it (he's recently passed on), and while i thought i could do hot (jalapenos are just pickles to me), i put a bit of this on my tongue just to get an idea. it blistered.

some other guy thought he'd be tough and put even more on his pulled pork sandwich. this was lunch. he had to go to the emergency room that afternoon and legend has it that it wasn't for the end it went in.

i gave some to a Thai friend who eats HOT food too. he called and asked how to dilute it, as he'd put it in curry and well, it was too much... not sure what's in it, but i'm not worried about an invasion or war, i've got enough left to weaponize... just saying...

dixie's catered my father's company picnic quite a few years ago. i scooped up a few morsels with a toothpick and spread it over my sandwich. unfortunately for my dad, he didn't quite notice the toothpicks and instead added several fork-fulls to his sandwich. two choco-tacos later, he was still feeling the burn pretty heavily. i personally thought it was one of the tastier sauces at that heat level as long as you were careful.

For those of you that love hot pizza, here is something I make my family (not the kids). Dough (I usually make my own), pizza sauce, then mozzarella and pepper jack cheese, Chorizo (I use the veggie kind, not as hot), Linguisa (again I use veggie, not as hot), and lots of pickled jalapeno pepper slices. Before I was Veg. I made this at a restaurant I worked at, and it is SO GOOD. Not as hot as some of things mentioned, but at least...edible!
