Benedict Cumberbatch: I'm Typecast For Being Rich

Benedict Cumberbatch

Talk about high class problems. Literally.

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has a ghost from his past casting a shadow over his career: he was too privileged growing up. The son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, Cumberbatch attended the Harrow school, which now charges $47703 in admission per year. As a result of his young posh education, he says casting directors are unwilling to see him in a role beyond that of a wealthy menace.

"I was brought up in a world of privilege. It can ostracize you from normal codes of conduct in society," he told the Radio Times. "Being a posh actor in England you cannot escape the class-typing from whatever side you look at it. I realized from quite early on that, although I wasn't trying to make a class specialty of it, I was playing slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals."

Cumberbatch is currently playing Sherlock Holmes in the hit BBC series "Sherlock" and is a supporting player in this winter's "War Horse" and "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy." He played Scarlett Johansson's very unlikable husband in "The Other Boelyn Girl," and will play the evil Smaug in the two "Hobbit" films.

In an interview with The Huffington Post to promote "War Horse," his cast mate Patrick Kennedy described how Cumberbatch embodied his proud and slightly arrogant character.

"We fell into our roles very quickly as a sort of dynamic outside of the film," Kennedy said. "I was the joker, Tom [Hiddleston] was the sort of noble, sincere and heroic one, Benedict was the sort of stern, more pompous one, and we were joking with each other around that dynamic."

He has done an excellent job playing the modern Sherlock Holmes. As for getting grittier roles, is it his poshness or is it his audition quality?

Just heard from my Brit friends. Season 2 of Sherlock is fantastic! Yeah!

I understand what he's saying. There are people that are typecast as being poor also. For whatever reason, being typecast probably sucks if acting is how you make your living.

I watched all 5 episodes of The Last Enemy last night and I was riveted. And I never thought I would even watch another Sherlock Holmes after Jeremy Brett, but I did and Cumberbatch is great.

I do wish he wouldn't do that to his hair though.

I too loved The Last Enemy. Can't wait to see TTS though I loved the BBC production.

Oh, Clare, I adored Jeremy Brett as Sherlock and in fact he made me love Sherlock and wasn't sure about Cumberbatch or a modern day version of SH but I loved it instantly to my surprise and the surprise of my friends. I've watched the first season twice.

Cumberbatch is right up there with on the list of my favorite English actors though I wish he hadn't made that comment or that he'd clarify, In the meantime I'm hoping the journalist misconstrued as so often happens.

fanned for being a Cumberbatch fan AND a Jeremy Brett/SH fan.

I refused to watch Sherlock until my daughter convinced me to. Good thing she did.

He was excellent as the modern day Sherlock Holmes. I'd like to see more of that.

Well, I wish he hadn't made that comment as I'm a huge fan of his and have seen everything he's done and love his take on Sherlock.

fanned for being a modern Sherlock fan. I wouldn't watch a GR film.

He was the same in Tinker as he is in Sherlock - hope he voices Smaug differently otherwise Hobbit fans will be outraged! Love smaug, the Hobbit and Peter Jackson. Although Tolkien wrote Smaug as aloof and privileged sitting on his horde! Can't wait for the movies no matter who voices Smaug...

Another English actor. Guess American actors just aren't good enough for this side of the pond...

Since I'm complaining about NOT using American actors I figured I didn't have to spell it out that I was referring to America. But, okay, It's the American side of the pond I am talking about.

I really like him in Sherlock and there are worse problems then being typecast. I must admit I thought his name was CumberSnatch not CumberBatch.

They don't make enough Sherlock episodes! He also does a killer Alan Rickman singing impression. HI-larious.

I watched him in several things. "Last Enemy" and "The Ends of the Earth" were both great, not to mention "Sherlock".

I'd be more concerned about the name than anything else.  It sounds like something Eddie Izzard was trying to get out during one of his shows...  :)

It's really okay Benedict, just keep doing what you do! I for one enjoy your acting. Hells bells, I just damn well like watching and listening to the Brits!
