New Year Reads: 7 Drunken Confessions From Literature

  First Posted: 12/31/11 03:57 PM ET   Updated: 01/03/12 03:40 AM ET

Aside from 21st birthdays and office holiday parties, New Year's Eve gatherings are probably the social events most conducive to drunken missteps and overshares. If you've ever told a fellow partygoer that you loved wearing dresses like that in the 80s, you're not alone--these literary characters have had their fair share of alcohol-induced confessions too.

Numerous good authors had a fondness for the drink, which affected their writing, such as Poe, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, and others.

The Dead is my favorite story from Dubliners. While someone at the dinner party may have drunk too much, to call it a a story about a 'drunken dinner' is way wide of the mark.

Rum Diaries is a drunken confession as a whole but here's no single pivotal revelation like Laws of Attraction or Gatsby.that would be so unlike an HST narrator since gonzo is an irreverently honest approach to journalism. To reveal secrets is not necessary a Gonzoreporters refuse to keep them.

Look at the photo that goes with the headline. I think it is meant to suggest someone too.

HP READ THIS

HP...fix your picture of our elected President of the United States next to the caption. It's this kind of disrespect that affects all of us. You make money off of your readership and advertising. Let the people's comments fly but don't go down "that" road."

So it's 'safe to assume' that Paul Kemp, Hunter Thompson's thinly veiled autobiographical character in The Rum Diaries was drunk...

... Safe to assume that the good Doctor was drunk.

...there's a stretch. The man drank Chivas for breakfast.

Which of you interns put this together? We really should go get drunk somewhere and talk about this.

Huff Po, I'm talking to you! The idea that you would use a picture that is or looks like Obama with the headline of your choice is beyond tacky and cheap...it's downright sick.

You are quickly losing my respect...

I had to go back and look... it neither is nor does it look like our POTUS. That's kind of weird that you would think that and then get faved for it.

When I saw the photo, my first thought was "Obama." However, Huff Po is not in the habit of making cheap Obama associations. Naturally, I though what a coincidence.

Now, if this was Faux News with its history of gut wrenching biased treatment of the president, I would think twice before dismissing @PollyTics.

Here is what conservative think tank legislation has done to us!
For working people the economy has been in recession since 1973.
The GOP and the rich corporatra¬tists have made a mess of everything¬.
1. Before 1973, The inflation Adjusted Median Income rose at 2.5% per year:

1953 = $22,648
1973 = $34,762

2. From 1973 to 2009, Inflation Adjusted Median Income fell by $2,578.

1973 = $34,762
2009 = $32,184

http://www¬.census.go¬v/hhes/www¬/income/da¬ta/histori¬cal/people¬/P05AR_200¬9.xls

3. The same thing shows up in Weekly Earnings.

All earners:

1979 = $339
2008 = $339

No Change over 30 years

Men:

1979 = $412
2010 = $389

DECREASE of $23/week

4. While per capita GPD has doubled:

1969 = $21,021
2010 = $42,517

http://www¬.ers.usda.¬gov/data/m¬acroeconom¬ics/Data/H¬istorical¬RealPerCa¬p¬itaIncom¬eV¬alues.x¬ls

5. This is accomplish by shifting the income distributi¬on:

Share Of Aggregate Income by Quintile:

BOTTOM 20% - 1967: 4.0% 2009: 3.4% Change: -0.6%
LOWER MIDDLE - 1967: 10.8% 2009: 8.6% Change: -2.2%

Why use Obama's likeness for this story? Well, so folks will click on it, and darn if it doesn't work! But it's not admirable, for there should be a modicum of truth in advertising. Call me uptight then.

Whether it is Obama or just a picture that looks like him, the effect is the same...and to me, it's merely another example of yellow journalism. I've seen other sensationalized headlines and pix from HuffPo, but this one seems to be more than a coincidence.
