No, Tim Burton and Mark Wahlberg's 2001 remake of "The Planet of the Apes" wasn't very well received by critics. On the plus side, it sparked a friendship -- and some funny situations.
"I have no better time on any movie than I had working with Tim," Wahlberg recently told MTV. "I had the most amazing time with Tim. I run to be on the set with him. We were doing reshoots, and he came out with me to Paris. We're in the club. Tim was in the club, man. Tim was in the club. Then he'd be drawing people, and all of his caricatures looked the same. He'd be drawing people in the club."
If his past work is any indication, the caricatures probably weren't all that flattering, unless the people in the club were a bunch of kids who frequented Hot Topic or loved children's stories.
In 2001, Wahlberg spoke about taking the role without reading the script -- he was a last minute addition after Matt Damon was unable to play the part -- and said that it was Burton's involvement that induced him to taking the leap.
"Tim's just one of those guys you know is going to do something interesting. Normally it would be really scary signing to a film without seeing the script. But it's Tim Burton," he told Culture.com. "And I think if you have an opportunity to work with him, no matter what you're doing, you do it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He's always done so many amazing things. So I would have been foolish to pass up the opportunity."
The end result didn't match his expectations, but Wahlberg is a realist; in his conversation with MTV, he concedes that the cold reception was justified. But at least he got a sweet night of clubbing out of it.
