Pangasinan, Philippines: Dogs Rescued On Way To Slaughterhouse

Philippines Dog Rescue

12/30/11 02:13 AM ET   AP

MANILA, Philippines -- Police in the northern Philippines say they've rescued dozens of dogs that were on their way to a slaughterhouse.

Police Supt. Ronaldo Gayo says 60 dogs were found alive, but 12 others had died of suffocation by the time police found them inside a van. The dogs' snouts and feet were bound by plastic cord.

Gayo says the van's driver and his assistant were arrested and escorted to their destination – a slaughterhouse inside a sprawling pig and poultry farm in San Carlos township in Pangasinan province.

The slaughterhouse's owner and workers managed to flee when police arrived before midnight Wednesday.

Killing dogs for the meat trade is illegal, but dog meat is considered a delicacy in some parts of the Philippines.

How a population treats children and animals offers a window into the collective soul. The proverb for 'those who live in glass house' works well here, too. Off I go to cuddle my furry baby...
08:16 PM on 01/01/2012
Animals and children, sounds like anything could be added to your list, how bout pincher bugs and dolphins, poodles and jumping beans my littlte pony and rex robot.

I guess I'm confused how you incorporated inanimate objects, that dont live or breathe, into this debate. That's quite foolish.
04:52 PM on 01/04/2012
Why not? It's too late for Tyrannosaurus Rex. Unsure about robots at this stage, though...

We've always treated animals as lesser beings. We've hunted animals to extinction
just for their fur and leave the carcass to rot.
We've killed apes just for their hands.
We kill animals for their horns or tusks, and walk away. We've over-fished our oceans.
Yes, this is horrendous, but how many puppy mills operate every single day in
our country?
How many cows, pigs and chickens are slaughtered every single day in this country?
We don't treat them any better on the way to the slaughterhouse either.
(And before the comments start, yes, I'm a vegan.)

How do comments like this further a mature discussion? I always see them on articles like this, and wonder why someone feels the need to assert their non-vegetarianism.

Ok, next time you're at the store, remember to pick up extra steaks. Its unfortunate that when the original commenter ate meat, that he/she took away from your consumption.

everything you stated is true whether one is vegan or not.

Death is never pretty. Im a typical American and i hate to see any animal suffering. I am however carnivore and my flesh screams for flesh at every meal. Farming any animal is fine with me as long as its done as humanely as possible. Trying to convince a third world nation that their practices are inhumane is pretty much futile, especially when their depending on the profits to feed their own families. If these people are breaking the law then they should be brought to justice. Death penalty um NO!! no animal is worth a human life.

At the cannibal theme park in Vanuatu, there is testimony that English men were the least favorite as their flesh was too salty and tasted like gin.
07:57 PM on 12/30/2011
If you must eat dogs, can you not at least raise and transport them in a humane manner?

I think its wrong and gross, but some people feel the same way about hamburgers, at least don't be senslessly cruel in the process! for shame!
08:08 PM on 01/01/2012
Agreed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ever seen a dog slaughter in progress? Google it. The dogs are hung upside down and beaten. Then, they are skinned ALIVE and their bodies thrown in a heap while they writhe and blink, waiting for the end to come. This is BAD stuff. But, you CANNOT turn away. There is no way to right a wrong if you won't accept that the wrong exists. Educate and empower yourself and act. I'm so glad the Huffington Post is featuring these articles.

Well, I just Google'd it. I can't find anything about the actual slaughtering process except from a couple PETA-owned websites. Needless to say, PETA is not an unbiased source. Even PETA, however, states they are beat then their throats are slit.

If PETA doesn't say it's as bad as you do, you are most likely making it up (as your name says) out of thin air.

Got a link to a source about this process?

FYI - don't say "Google it" if you haven't actually Googled it.

I have seen videos as he describes. They are not made up. If you cannot find them on the web then you are not trying hard enough.

Nobody should need to spoon feed you the links; they are out there.

Pretty horrific, but not any worse than here in the US. Or you can listen to the mouthpiece of the breeding industry and the AKC, Chad Wheeler, who loves to spread misinformation and wants you to belive that animals are living in the lap of luxury in our country while lining his pockets.
07:52 PM on 12/30/2011
Exactly. The "squeaky clean, professional AKC"... The breeding industry is responsible for the overflowing shelters and rescues. To protect their industry they lobby agressively against legislation that would control overpopulation of domestic animals. The AKC is TAINTED and GREEDY. Let's mark it.
