Montreal Canadiens defenceman PK Subban was subjected to a racial slur at the end of the first period of Saturday's game in Florida against the Panthers, according to a report.

Florida forward Krys Barch was given a game misconduct after time expired at the end of the first following a scrum between Panthers and Canadiens players.

Linesman Darren Gibbs reported hearing a racial slur used by Barch, according to a tweet from Panthers beat reporter George Richards of the Miami Herald.

Subban, born in Toronto to parents originally from Jamaica, incurred four penalty minutes during the scrum.

So, what else is new. Some people are so idiotic it hard for them to change, not that they want to, and will also be the first to say "stop using the race card".

Bad decision but does in the heat of the game count for anything anymore

Perhaps you have been reading quotes from Sepp Blatter; President of FIFA, who recently stated that racism on the pitch (During the game) can be forgotten about as long as the players shake hands afterwards. Either way this issue appears to have been reported up by an onlooker / hearer and not by the player who was (Allegedly) abused. The linesman has acted correctly and done his duty-But has he done anything for the image of the game?

People say things when they are hurt or angry that they would not normally say...and he is really sneaky with the slew-footing.

Hold on.
Someone associate with the Canadiens was the TARGET of a racial slur?

Keeping quiet tells racists their behaviour is tolerable.
It's best to expose racism whenever it happens.

Give me a break. It happens with people interacting wit others, especially in fast moving sports, and it isn't the end of the world. Instead of fretting about this case of spilled milk, that in the scheme of life means little, because each race does it on occasion to others, let's fret about things that really are important such the Defense Auth Act that Obama just signed into law (even though he fretted about it too for 30 seconds).

doesn't mean it's appropriate or necessary.

The story is about the media doing what they do best.....keep us divided as people and arguing about the small stuff while the 1% get to corrupt, plunder and manipulate us into fascism under their control.

So racism is not important.   Don't give me the old line about both sides do it.   To ignore it is to condone it.   To ignore it is to pass on to kids the idea that it is okay to make such comments because you will be excused because it was in the heat of the moment.   Is anything excused because it is a fast moving sport and was done in the heat of the moment.   Sorry, Robson.   As a parent, grandparent and a greatgrandparent, and a follower of hockey for more than 60 years, I will not accept this as just  a little, unimportant thing.   It was right to expose it and show it will not be tolerated.

As far as President Obama goes, making the statement that he only "fretted about it...for 30 seconds"
is pure hyperbole and downright nonsense.

I didn't realize racial slurs were against the rules. Next thing you know there will be legislation introduced by to make racial slurs a felony.

It violates the code of conduct.
Maybe there should be laws regarding this. You seem to condone this type of hate.

If they aren't against the rules of the game, they are at the very least tacky and rude. Why should anyone be subjected to that kind of crap?

Stay classy, Florida.

We are hearing more about this stuff due to the 24/7 news coverage and it is a good thing we hear about stuff like this that would have been covered-up in the past. Only the light of day exposes this type of behaviour and names the players doing it.

I thought pro players were supposed to at least behave when they are on a public stage as professionals. In private they can wallow in their own bigotted way as much as they want. Abusing their fellow professionals in this way is not acceptable and it is good to see the linesmen reporting things like this no matter who does it.

Oh, it has become much better at European sport venues. I remember the nineties, those days were totally different. Lots of hooliganism and right wingers were (and still are) very well represented on the stands. Stanley Menzo, a black Dutch keeper played in the Belgian league. At one game, someone threw a banana from the stands. But Menzo had lot's of class, he picked it up, and ate the banana. Afterwards, no one hassled him again.
