Gas And Other Fuels Are Top U.S. Exports, For First Time

Top United States Export

By CHRIS KAHN   12/31/11 04:38 AM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- For the first time, the top export of the United States, the world's biggest gas guzzler, is – wait for it – fuel.

Measured in dollars, the nation is on pace this year to ship more gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel than any other single export, according to U.S. Census data going back to 1990. It will also be the first year in more than 60 that America has been a net exporter of these fuels.

Just how big of a shift is this? A decade ago, fuel wasn't even among the top 25 exports. And for the last five years, America's top export was aircraft.

The trend is significant because for decades the U.S. has relied on huge imports of fuel from Europe in order to meet demand. It only reinforced the image of America as an energy hog. And up until a few years ago, whenever gasoline prices climbed, there were complaints in Congress that U.S. refiners were not growing quickly enough to satisfy domestic demand; that controversy would appear to be over.

Still, the U.S. is nowhere close to energy independence. America is still the world's largest importer of crude oil. From January to October, the country imported 2.7 billion barrels of oil worth roughly $280 billion.

Fuel exports, worth an estimated $88 billion in 2011, have surged for two reasons:

_ Crude oil, the raw material from which gasoline and other refined products are made, is a lot more expensive. Oil prices averaged $95 a barrel in 2011, while gasoline averaged $3.52 a gallon – a record. A decade ago oil averaged $26 a barrel, while gasoline averaged $1.44 a gallon.

_ The volume of fuel exports is rising. The U.S. is using less fuel because of a weak economy and more efficient cars and trucks. That allows refiners to sell more fuel to rapidly growing economies in Latin America, for example. In 2011, U.S. refiners exported 117 million gallons per day of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other petroleum products, up from 40 million gallons per day a decade earlier.

There's at least one domestic downside to America's growing role as a fuel exporter. Experts say the trend helps explain why U.S. motorists are paying more for gasoline. The more fuel that's sent overseas, the less of a supply cushion there is at home.

Gasoline supplies are being exported to the highest bidder, says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service. "It's a world market," he says.

Refining companies won't say how much they make by selling fuel overseas. But analysts say those sales are likely generating higher profits per gallon than they would have generated in the U.S. Otherwise, they wouldn't occur.

The value of U.S. fuel exports has grown steadily over the past decade, coinciding with rising oil prices and increased demand around the globe.

Developing countries in Latin America and Asia have been burning more gasoline and diesel as their people buy more cars and build more roads and factories. Europe also has been buying more U.S. fuel to make up for its lack of refineries.

And there's a simple reason why America's refiners have been eager to export to these markets: gasoline demand in the U.S. has been falling every year since 2007. It dropped by another 2.5 percent in 2011. With the economy struggling, motorists cut back. Also, cars and trucks have become more fuel-efficient and the government mandates the use of more corn-based ethanol fuel.

The last time the U.S. was a net exporter of fuels was 1949, when Harry Truman was president. That year, the U.S. exported 86 million barrels and imported 82 million barrels. In the first ten months of 2011, the nation exported 848 million barrels (worth $73.4 billion) and imported 750 million barrels.

This is reply to BanBest: I do not see a manly thing about you. All I see is a baby who want to grow up. I like for you to be honest to yourself, and I do not hate you.. I am answering many people, and I do not worry about how I write. I am retired and do not worry. I am not trying to impress anyone. My time in Vietnam taugh me that. I came back and went to college and work for Intellgence in the government. Writing skill are important at this this time. People want to judge about not proof reading. It is ok. Again I am responding back Quik as possible. I want to know that I am a ex-Marine and combat Vietnam veteran. I do things quickly and keep moving. I know you do not hate me. I do worry about my spelling.

Hemp BIO-ENERGY
Hemp 6X more BTUS than Corn
Hemp uses less water no herbicides and little pesticides and fertilizer.

Subbituminous coal is common in the US. It has an energy content of about 18 million Btu per ton, and is used mostly in coal-fired power plants

Coal generates about half of the electricity used in the United States. ... Each person in the United States uses 3.8 tons of coal each year.

Some 965 million tons of coal were consumed for the generation of electricity. This amounted to 86% of total U.S. coal production

U.S. soybeans 76.6 million acres

U.S. corn 90 million acres

Half of the acres 83.3 million acres

Hemp yields an average of nine dry tons per acre
(more in southern areas)

749 million tons hemp fiber

Bio-diesel Hempoline can be made from leaves and stalks.

You would also have the hemp seeds as a food source too.

U.S. annual anhydrous ammonia 22.90 million tons used.

U.S. ROUND-UP use100 million pounds
Contaminated with 1,4 dioxane

HERO-INSECTIDE SYNGENTA INSECTICIDE Soybeans and corn

This reply is to BoFo: I am not being disrespectful to anyone, but the truth hurt. The truth about the untruth is really best for people. Know the true facts about your society will not mislead you. I want to know the truth about slavery, but not lies. Africans were not stupit the way US. History Books tell the story. Africa had impires. The middle East was not backwards as the west say it is. The Miidle East had what Europe and the west need. The problem is that people like yourself live of false indenity, history etc. I am proud to be a black man and from the son of slave, and American Native Indians. Slavery is history as long it is told right. Wipe your tears and accept the truth about yourself. Muslims gave the world society a lot. I have pride in myself before, and I have pride in my people . I must be proud of myself, before I can be proud of my country. My country do not give me pride. I am who I am and no one else. I am not a white person, and proud not to be a white person. I respect white people, and they will respect me as a black man. You a wonderful New Year, and understand yourself. Your wrongs as well your good. If I step on your foot and others feet. Brush the dirt and look for truth in your life. Society see the truth.

Laws were made to be modify to fit what they need or benefit them the law makers. You must undrstand Lincoln was a Republican. Many Democrats do not know the law of the Constitution. I am not a politician. I know some of the history of the US., but it is the hidden history of the US I know. Many scholars in the United States were educated through the US. School System. They now realize they were taught false history of the US.history and of the world. People must paid attention to the history being written today about the history of the US. and the world. News Media make false history with lies to benefit the US. Government. History about the Native Indians are lies in US. History Books. Many immgrants know US. laws BETTER than US. Citizens. It is why they get here illegal and laugh. I enjoy my country (US.) as long as it speak the truth.

"Gasoline supplies are being exported to the highest bidder, says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service. "It's a world market," he says." Yep and its waaay better because you can offshore all those profits, take your tax rebates and subsidies, raise US prices and hide behind "energy security" laws in case anyone protests.

Remember the Keystone XL project that there has been so much hullabaloo about recently? Well, I bet most people have no clue that this project will actually INCREASE the cost of oil in the US according to TransCanada. According to Reuters (link below):

"...a 2009 market analysis conducted by TransCanada, builder of the pipeline... projected that prices would increase about $3 per barrel as a result of the pipeline."

So there you go. Straight from the “horse’s mouth” (i.e. TransCanada). In addition to this “bonus”, the project will greatly benefit the dastardly Koch Bros who own businesses that "already import and refine 25 percent of oil sands crude reaching the U.S." according to the same story in Reuters. Please do yourself and everyone else a favor and read the article:

Mr. Will begins his syndicated New Year's column by hugging himself with Imperial self-satisfaction: America is a net exporter of energy products for the first time in 62 years!

The unwary consumer of Mr. Will's self-congratulatory prose (he has a corner office in the sprawling Ministry of Propaganda) might wrongly interpret this to mean that America is a net exporter of energy: it is not. The U.S. is a net importer of over 9 million barrels of oil a day.

How dependent are we on foreign oil? (U.S. Energy Information Administration)

The United States consumed 19.1 million barrels per day (MMbd) of petroleum products during 2010, making us the world's largest petroleum consumer. The United States was third in crude oil production at 5.5 MMbd. But crude oil alone does not constitute all U.S. petroleum supplies. Significant gains occur, because crude oil expands in the refining process, liquid fuel is captured in the processing of natural gas, and we have other sources of liquid fuel, including biofuels. These additional supplies totaled 4.2 MMbd in 2010.

In 2010 the United States imported 11.8 million barrels per day (MMbd) of crude oil and refined petroleum products. We also exported 2.3 MMbd of crude oil and petroleum products during 2010, so our net imports (imports minus exports) equaled 9.4 MMbd.

There is really no one that influences or controls our US government that gives a rats axx about the needs of 300+M USA citizens. Instead they are typically globalists who work and want more profits and more greed and expend effort to help themselves, and just as often our entangling alliance with our little "friend" in the Middle East. It is an outrage that the USA is governed for the benefit of global greed and avarice, but not for Americans. But in the end it is our own fault because we've allowed Hollywood, the media, politicians, pundits, and other interests to deflect and control our interests

This reply is to novictim: I lost my trust is the US. Government. My honesty was lost when when I took an oath to up-hold to protect Democray in the US. The truthness is the oath was a lie. The same way you are a lie! I am a person who believe in self-pride not the pride of others. You can not understand, because you are a person who live off other people struggles. You probably never been in the service or a war. If you were it probably was in the reserves for an education. You seem like a mommy boy who was protected by her in school. Once you become a man of trust, honesty and the believe of self-pride. You will become a better citizen of the United States. Many soldiers had self-respect and pride for life. The military did not have all people who did not respect people. People of your society do not respeact thier mothers, fathers or thier children. It is why you have a problem with yourself. I know you hate me because of my man-hood, but most of all my strenght to be a Marine and a combat Veteran in Vistnam. Finish puting your pamper on, because you are wet. Happy New Year. You hide behide the US. government to protect you. If the US. had more good men this country would be a better nation.

You are being disrespectful to everyone here by not replying to other people's comments in the normal way. Your comments are not more important than the comments of others. Is this the way you behave in other areas of your life? If so, you have nothing to be proud of.

"Consumers pay more for fuel because it is exported?" What a joke, why would they export as much?
All of the refineries in PA and NJ are being closed. I heard through the grapevine that the gas was going to be refined in Europe.
More lies-the cost of fuel-the most being used by the military-is based on speculation of the commody market. Zip to do with supply and demand.

So Keystone the pipeling system is designed to get more oil to Texas...so it can be refined and sold abroad as gasoline and diesel. And how is this good for American consumers?

This rerply is to emma123: People who did the most migration are Jews. The Bible will tell you that. Many peopel are from one area and lived within that area. They moved around within that area. Africans also stay within thier area. Europeans heard about riches in other places, and began to migrate and take over. Marco polo brought Europe many things from other places. Gold, spices, understanding etc. I respect other places, and I want to understand the truth about other people. The Europeans claim they brough the of the west a God. The Native Indians of west always had a believe in superior being from above. The Europeans gave them a white God who look like the Europeans. The people of European Society are discovering the unknown fact of the Native People of the West. The Europeans are amazed of the knowledge the Native People in the have. European were backwards.
