Many popular household cleaners can hide toxic chemicals in their list of ingredients. Those ingredients stay behind when you clean and contribute to indoor air pollution. Better choices include using homemade cleaners made from natural products like vinegar, baking soda, and borax. Click here for green cleaning recipes. You can also opt for store bought cleaners which are plant based and biodegradable.

God help us, when will you people learn that everything consists of chemicals? Vinegar is mostly CH3COOH. Borax is either Anhydrous borax (Na2B4O7) Borax pentahydrate (Na2B4O7·5H2O) Borax decahydrate (Na2B4O7·10H2O). And diatomaceous earth consists mostly of silica, alumina, and iron oxide. All of these are chemicals, and all of these in enough concentration are toxic. In fact in the EU, Borax is a "substance of very high concern".
We in fact need traces of many poisons in our bodies to survive, including arsenic. So for god's sake will you stop making this stupid distinction between 'natural' and 'chemical', it doesn't exist.

No need to be so snarky. Most people know that "everything consists of chemicals". It's the toxicity of certain chemicals that is concerning. Of course anything in enough concentration is toxic...even water.
I read articles like this to educate myself about making better choices. Your comment did nothing to teach me something I didn't already know.

Then you'd be the first. If everyone else knew, there wouldn't be this false natural/chemical dichotomy.

This author may not understand how "organic" apples are mass-produced. They can be sprayed and many as 17 times in a growing season with sprays that have not been evaluated for long-term health risks. They are qualified as "organic" by virtue of being made more-or-less directly from other plant substances, including special trees and bark grown only in South American rain-forests. The real health hazard in apples is ecoli from the unwashed pickers' hands. Many growers are going out of their way to train pickers to use hand-washing stations frequently and to NOT place their hands on the rungs of to picking ladders where their manured shoes have tread.

If you stop buying factory farm products that will help the environment.

Do you take an interest in the quality of what you put in your belly? Yes? Then why do you still go to those huge supermarket stores that sell you junk food wrapped up in pretty packaging? Did you know that the ‘fresh food’ they sell you is never less than 4 days old? That it has often travelled half way around the world before it gets to you? That it is coming from huge monocultural fields whose soils have been soused with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and nitrates? You don’t know what nitrates are? They are toxic stimulants that force plants to grow faster and bigger than they would naturally. All large scale commercial farmers use them. The residues from these nitrates land up in our drinking water – and therefore in our bellies – and so do the pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. So do you begin to get the picture?

But that’s not all! Oh no, whenever you buy those bakery products chances are you are getting genetically modified soya added to the flour – and ever wondered what that might be doing to you, slowly, over many years? No?

Tablespoon real apple vinegar + spoonful of real honey + a few crystals of ascorbic acid (used for canning) added to some cold water and ice cubes, and you can wean your kids off soda.

High fructose corn syrup has nothing to do with 'corn', once it's processed in giant stainless vats into a synthetic chemical form which damages childrens' sugar balance metabolism, and destroys their young teeth, setting up a *lifetime* of ill health and lack of energy.

Another drink I learned from a Depression-era nurse is buy real oat flakes (not the 'fast' kind) and soak a cup in a half gallon of water in the sun, then drain (save the oats for breakfast) and cool the liquid. That's what Midwesterners drank before industrial food-substance processing.

Left over boiled potato water is also delicious when chilled, especially kids allergic to 'milk'.

Vinegar-honey, oat or potato drink. Try them on your kids, that's how they learn to *choose and prepare their own foods* instead of standing in line for pink goo 'meat substance' burgers.

We can write down all of the chemicals in our home and look up the MSDSs for these chemicals on line. Half of the chemicals in sunscreen say do not allow in lakes rivers and streams. We destroyed the coral reef in the GOM with our sunscreen. Most of the chemicals we scream about when Industry spill them, we pour down our drains with large amounts of dispersants.

"chloride" is not organic and it is not volatile. it isn't even something that you could breathe in unless you were in a plasma environment. chloride is an ion and you eat it all the time.
