Pope Names Cleric For US Ex-Anglicans

Anglicans

FRANCES D'EMILIO   01/ 1/12 04:02 PM ET   AP

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI named a married former Episcopal bishop Sunday to head the first U.S. organizational structure for disaffected Anglicans and Episcopalians who want to join the Roman Catholic Church.

The Rev. Jeffrey Neil Steenson, a father of three and Catholic convert, will lead the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, the equivalent of a diocese, that will be based in Houston, Texas, but will operate nationally.

The Vatican created the first such ordinariate in Britain last year. Other ordinariates are being considered in Australia and Canada.

Steenson stepped down in 2007 as the Episcopal Bishop of Rio Grande, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after the Episcopal Church elected the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire. Steenson had said he was "deeply troubled" about the direction of the U.S. denomination and he described the Catholic Church as the "true home of Anglicanism."

The Episcopal Church is the U.S. Anglican body in the United States.

Benedict in 2009 issued an unprecedented invitation for Anglicans to become Catholic in groups or as parishes, at a time when traditional Anglicans in several countries were increasingly upset by the ordination of women and gay bishops. Formerly, Anglican converts to Catholicism were accepted on a case-by-case basis.

The pope's decision created tensions with Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the spiritual leader of the world Anglican Communion, who like his predecessors had been in talks with Vatican officials to bring Anglicans and Catholics closer together.

The 77-million-member Anglican fellowship has its roots in the Church of England, which split from the Holy See in 1534 when English King Henry VIII was refused a marriage annulment.

At the time of the pope's announcement, Anglicans were already fracturing over Robinson's election and other issues. Williams had little advance notice of the Vatican announcement. Still, after meeting privately with the pope soon after, the archbishop of Canterbury said he was convinced that there was no "dawn raid" on his church by the Holy See.

Under the pope's plan, Anglicans who become Catholic will be allowed to keep some of their heritage in liturgy and other areas. Married Anglican priests who convert can stay married and be ordained in the Catholic Church, an exception to the Vatican's celibacy rule. Married Anglican bishops, however, cannot retain that position, and will serve the Catholic Church as priests.

More than 100 Anglican clergy have applied to become Catholic priests in the U.S. ordinariate. Church officials said more than 1,400 individuals are seeking to join. The U.S. Episcopal Church has just under 2 million members. Many Anglo-Catholics in the United States had never been part of the Episcopal Church.

Steenson, 59, who has a doctorate from the University of Oxford, has been married since 1974 and has three adult children. His wife also converted to Catholicism. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 2009 in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and helped create the education and training program for Anglican priests seeking to join the Catholic Church.

Bye bye...and oh, I hope you're not expecting your pension from the Episcopal Church as the Church of England bishops that entered the Ordinariate were expecting.

Best thing I ever did in my life is when I kissed the Catholic Church good bye and moved over to the Episcopalians.

My, my. The Pope's been a busy little bee lately. Something must be up for the Catholic Church to get so involved with the world for a change. The Vatican has been so closed and cryptic for so long until their dirty little scerets started to leak out over the last decade. Things may just fall apart for the Vatican version of Catholicism within the next decade.

No, Pope JP II, the Great, and Pope Benedict have taken the true Spirit of Vatican II into action by welcoming the world to collaborate with the Church for peace through loving God and neighbor. The Anglicans and Episcipalians approached Rome about crossing the Tiber and the Pope has ensured they are welcomed. I have seen others move into the Roman Catholic Church too because their previous churches were taking on secular views....Veritas.

The Catholic Church will try anything to not lose the power it holds now. In case you haven't noticed: There are less Catholic schools, there are more Catholic clergy involved in pedophilia, there are less Catholics going to church despite an increase in population. The Catholic church recently decided to change or modify the interpretations of the bible and their services. This has happened as well in The Eastern Orthodox churches. The attempt to rekindle faith and retain orthodoxy has little to do with the world we live in today.
2 questions, since you seem to have a good knowledge of Catholicism.

1. Why did the church attempt to squelch and discredit Mother Teresa?
2. Why can the Catholic priests still not marry, yet do not practice abstinence?

Sad to see people leave the ANGLICAN COMMUNION (and in the U.S. The Episcopal Church) because of their disagreements with the presence of homosexuals in the clergy, while joining a church with so many "closeted" homosexual clergy. I don't get it!
04:20 PM on 01/02/2012
Father Cutie, read some of your book, good read.

However shouldn't the sexual orientation of a priest not matter because the Catholic priest is essentially asexual?

I'm also not a fan of the Anglican Church because they were founded on the pride of Henry VIII, not any of the 12 Apostles. Just seems like a quasi-Catholic Church without any of the apostolic foundation.

Also without the guilt, the horrendous record of child buggary, hypocrisy regarding homosexuals, and misogyny. But otherwise the services are fairly similar.
03:48 AM on 01/03/2012
Nope. Catholic priests--any celibate clergy--are not necessarily asexual. Asexuality refers to orientation, celibacy is about choice. Therefore, a gay or a straight clergy member has attractions but puts them to one side in order to serve the church.

This idea that ordination automatically sterilizes is part of the problem. See St. Francis of Assisi, who when people wanted to treat him like a saint in his own lifetime, used to say "I'm still young enough to father a child." Not that he was incapable. He wouldn't and chose not to.

(Also, suggesting to a conservative Anglican that they *don't* have apostolic succession is--seriously--a deadly insult. It's not all about Henry VIII, as much as he would have liked to think so.)

Mr. Cutie, interesting to see your post. You, of course, know that these people are fleeing "churches" who have moved to a secular view of key Christian issues. You also, due to your extensive Catholic education, know that everyone has a cross to bear. Homosexuality can be one, but is no more of a cross than temptation to commit adultry, or violate vows as a celibate Priest in the Catholic Church. The sin is in succumbing to Satan's temptation. Being homosexual is not a sin and with God's grace, can be no more than a temptation. Hope this helps clarify the issue for you. Veritas.

Yes, and who are these disaffected Anglicans and Episcopalians? Those who are narrow minded homophobes and misogynists desperately seeking church leaders who represent their views in Africa and third world countries. The Anglican church is happy to see their backsides pass through the door.
With record numbers abandoning the Catholic church, one supposes the pope must find new members anywhere he can find them. Not ironically, these birds have found the perfect nesting place that is almost guaranteed to hold up well against the winds of change for decades to come. A foul nest it is and fouler one to come.

A little clarification folks .....

Anglican priests who convert can stay married and be ordained in the Catholic Church, an exception to the Vatican's celibacy rule.

This is not an exception to the rules ..... Any married men can become a priests so long as he was married first... , Celibacy applies to the priesthood If you are a priest first , not married.

You would have to leave the priesthood if you wanted to marry .

Billy, where are you getting your info? I don't believe the Code of Canon Law allows for married men to be ordained into the Priesthood, but they can transfer from other denominations if they are already married. Deacons fall under the guidelines you point out. Veritas.

To the person who said no one notices that other cultures have been absorbed in the church there are many who notice. Modern cultural anthropologists have a lot of good information on goddesses becoming in modern times the virgin Mary.

Since the episcoplals have ordained women priests I assume they could then become priests in the Catholic Church as long as they hated gays. Or are only gay hating episcopalian men priests accepted.
01:27 AM on 01/02/2012
Men only, I'm afraid! Nope, the same people who were against ordaining women are also against ordaining openly gay clergy.
02:11 AM on 01/02/2012
They are against ordaining openly gay clergy but not against closedly gay clergy. Does this mean that they might ordain closedly feminine clergy?
ThinkCreeps
Seriously, it's time.
08:27 AM on 01/02/2012
That would a very amusing test case - it would certainly be amusing listening to the absurd justification for refusing to admit an ordained woman from the episcopalians, especially in light of discrimination legislation, after the vatican has bent the rules to accept otherwise ineligible men.
05:22 PM on 01/02/2012
Hopefully an episcopalian women priest will apply for priesthood in RCC. It would be fun to watch the Pope squirm and see what kind of religious edicts he will invoke to not accept the woman.
