Iowa Poll Shows Paul-Romney-Santorum Dead Heat

First Posted: 01/02/2012 9:04 am Updated: 01/02/2012 9:04 am

WASHINGTON -- The latest poll of Iowa's likely Republican caucus-goers provides more evidence of a race headed toward a photo finish, with Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and a surging Rick Santorum running within two percentage points of each other.

The automated poll conducted by the Democratic Party-affiliated firm Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows Ron Paul at 20 percent, Mitt Romney at 19 percent and Rick Santorum at 18 percent on a survey for which PPP reports a margin of error for each candidate of +/- 2.7 percent. Running farther back are Newt Gingrich at 14 percent, Rick Perry at 10 percent, Michele Bachmann at 8 percent, Jon Huntsman at 4 percent and Buddy Roemer at 2 percent. PPP interviewed 1,340 likely Republican caucus goers on December 31 and January 1.

Like other recent polls, PPP shows strong momentum for Rick Santorum, who gained 8 percentage points in the last week. PPP also finds evidence that Santorum still has room to grow: His personal rating -- 60 percent favorable, 30 percent unfavorable -- currently stands as the strongest of the field, and voters choosing other candidates pick Santorum most often as their second choice (14 percent choose Santorum as their second choice versus 11 percent for Romney and 8 percent for Paul).

PPP's results and trends are mostly consistent with those on a half-dozen other polls released in the last week. HuffPost Pollster's chart, based on all public polls in Iowa, currently shows Mitt Romney leading with 22.5 percent, Ron Paul in second but fading slightly to 19.1 percent, Rick Santorum rising fast to 17.1 percent, and Newt Gingrich still falling and now at 12.9 percent.

One important area of consistency is a modest decline for Ron Paul, from 24 percent on PPP's poll last week to 20 percent on the new survey. PPP also reports a "precipitous drop" in Paul's personal ratings, from a net positive (53 percent favorable, 40 percent unfavorable) to net negative (43 percent favorable, 51 percent unfavorable) in just one week. The decline for Paul is consistent with what other polls have found, as evident on the HuffPost Pollster chart. It is also consistent with similar declines reported by the other organizations that have fielded multiple surveys in late December, such as American Research Group, WeAskAmerica and Insider Advantage.

PPP shows no significant change for Mitt Romney during late December, although their current estimate of Romney's support (19 percent) is 1 percentage point lower than last week (20 percent). Other polls have generally shown a gradual increase in support for Romney during December, though results from the three other pollsters who fielded two surveys in late December have been mixed.

The outcome of the Iowa race hinges on a number of potentially offsetting factors that remain difficult to predict:

  • Will Santorum continue to gain and pick up votes from candidates like Michelle Bachmann and Newt Gingrich, whose support has been dropping? Or will the Tea Party and evangelical Christian voters who have been persistently reluctant to support Romney remain divided enough to allow Romney to win?
  • Are polls correctly gauging intent to participate by evangelical Christians and older traditional Republican caucus-goers? As reported by the Des Moines Register Iowa poll, both have been less of a factor than usual in polling this year. An evangelical turnout similar to Republican caucuses past would aid Santorum, while a typically heavier turnout of past Republican caucus-goers over 65 would benefit Romney.
  • Will hardcore supporters of Ron Paul, who tend to be younger and more politically independent, turn out in numbers greater or less than those found in most public polls?

A few more polls will likely trickle out on Monday, but the ultimate answers will have to wait for the votes to be counted Tuesday night.

We've come a long way and Paul's finish, our finish is a victory loud and clear.
As we move forward to regain our rights, freedoms and liberty's keep in mind the challenges.
None of the other candidates could have survived the same media treatment Paul took on and done so well.
First the media completely ignored Paul, they acted as if he did not exist. Yet we over came that. When Paul began to rise in the polls the media could no longer ignore him. They went on precision timed offensive and attacked him viciously, they drew blood and you could see it in the polls. Yet Paul still came in 3rd only 4% behind first.

Iowa has proven there are many like minded people ready to retake their freedom and liberty.
Ready to chain the beast that is the federal government and make it serve the people once more.
The time to act is now. Over the next eleven months we need to be on the offensive to educate and recruit as many people as we can. Paul has the system in place but he needs our help. Please contact their campaign office and offer your assistance, they have the tools to help you educate your neighbours, family and friends.

Freedom and liberty have been stolen from us. Do you have the courage to stand up and take it back?

Ron Paul 619 pieces of legislation introduced in 19 years in congress and "ONE" passed)historical preservation of a building). Why are we talking about this guy? He's an isolationist who would ruin this country, something every European country would love.

Sorry, an establishment talking-point not backed up by the facts. The libertarian position on federal government is to provide national defense, allow free trade and utilize diplomacy (nonintervention).

Of course, talking about one piece of legislation as proof of his ineffectiveness in congress is faulty - in reality passing one bill speaks more volumes about the corruption of congress than does the only one who actually follows his oath of office.

Your argument falls flat on its foolish face of course, because in order for passing one bill to be proof of ineffectiveness, you must assume that any bill that is passed is automatically regarded as an accomplishment, when in actuality many bills have destroyed this country.

I suppose Santorum is 'accomplished' because he supported raising the debt ceiling - 5 times?

Okay, here is a fact;1) he hasn't done anything to improve the system in all his years in congress, wheather to appeal or promote ;2) by your definition Lindon Johnston was a failure because he passed more legislation than any past or present president;3) and finally he was a failure because most of the legislation had to do with civil rights,by your diefination. PS our president just asked for another trillion dollars and we haven't had a budget sense he has been in office because the dems don't want one, loosers! That's okay, give it to your kids and grandkids...

RON PAUL

I am no GOP booster, but I would vote for RON PAUL over Obama.

What! No Perry?

I was looking forward to watching Perry trip over his reptile-brain a few dozen more times!

He's so much fun! I'm gonna miss him...

The media seems to think that we are, or should be, voting for the guy we think has the most likely chance to beat Obama.... Who had the most likely chance of winning the Democratic nomination in 2008, according to the pollsters and the punsters? Was it Obama? Obama was supposed to represent change... How about a change from a government that as taken away your right to a trial before being imprisoned? Our current government, Democrats and Republicans, have given us that law. Is this Russia under Stalin? You can now be locked up and imprisoned indefinitely, without a trial, ever, under suspicion of being a terrorist. Only one candidate stands for your civil rights under the constitution and will give you back your rights as a citizen, Dr. Ron Paul. Wake up America!

It's like watching to see who will come in last place come election time. Has there ever been such a group of wingnut's to choose from before in the Republican Party all with so much baggage they make a hotel porter look empty handed?

Out of the millions of people to choose from in the U.S. this is as good as it gets? Pathetic.

Ha, the best and brightest that the GOTP has to offer! 10 or 15 years ago each would be considered fringe candidates with no chance. Now they are considered heroic standard bearers that will lead this country to further greatness. However, the only thing heroic about them is that they are tragic heros with a fatal flaw you could drive a campaign buss through.

Should have left the Cain line on the support graph. In a longer time frame Mr. Trump's support would have to be noted too.

These "top" three are a disgrace. It would be funny if they ended the caucus in a statistical dead heat because it would keep them sniping at each other in the next round. The more scrutiny they get, the worse they look. Newt and Bachmann are finished...though Newt may have enough money to continue for another round...and Bachman is delusional enough to waste her time and her State's money(she certainly isn't doing the job she's getting paid for) for a few more weeks. Perry will continue his slapstick pratfalls for as long as his state will allow him. The upside to this is that he may have put an end to his royal tenure in Texas.

Funny. If Romney wins it is still a likely conservative win because most would have voted against him. While the media is hoping for a race, none of these guys stand a chance against Obama, a year any incumbent in Obama's economic state would have likely lost. That is the sad state of the Republican Party..

What is even sadder that Obama, with no experience, won his election and has offered up more debt, unemployment, hatred throughout the world and lets not forget the bill he signed to hold ANY AMERICAN incommunicado indefinatley. All he needs now is to take our right to bare arms and his socialist government it a lock. You get a 100% on a test and I get a 50%.Lets average it out and spread the wealth, oops YOU get a 75 and me too. Why should I work when I have suckers like you.

The reason why Ron Paul is gaining support is that he tells the truth, like it or not, over and over.

People are fed up with expensive government policies which do more harm than good, and which are based on lies and ignorance, i.e. the drug war and most of our foreign policy.

The more money , time and effort that WiIIard has to spend , the greater the dem landslide shall be.

I say it goes beyond Super Tuesday with Perry coming back with the money.
( shocker I know , but he just has too much money backing him -- even if he cannot remember )
