Mount Rainier Shooting: Suspected Gunman Found Dead

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. -- The body of an Iraq war veteran suspected in the slaying of a Mount Rainier National Park ranger was believed to have been found in chest-deep snow on Monday, authorities said.

Authorities believe Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, fled to the remote park following an earlier shooting that wounded four near Seattle, sparking a search by SWAT team members and other police.

The body believed to be Barnes was found face down in the snow, said Washington State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill. The identity was not confirmed.

Almost all park visitors were evacuated from the area following the shooting of ranger Margaret Anderson. The park remained closed for a second day Monday.

Barnes has had a troubled transition to civilian life, with accusations he suffers post-traumatic stress disorder and is suicidal.

He was involved in a custody dispute in Tacoma in July, during which his toddler daughter's mother sought a temporary restraining order against him, according to court documents.

The woman told authorities he was suicidal and possibly suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after deploying to Iraq in 2007-2008, and had once sent her a text message saying "I want to die."

She alleged that he gets easily irritated, angry and depressed and keeps an arsenal of weapons in his home. She wrote that she feared for the child's safety.

Undated photos provided by police showed a shirtless, tattooed Barnes brandishing two weapons, a large rifle and a smaller firearm with a large clip.

In November 2011, a guardian ad litem recommended parenting and communication classes for both parents and recommending Barnes be allowed to continue supervised visits with the child, two days a week.

That visitation schedule was to continue until he completed a domestic violence evaluation and mental health evaluation and complied with all treatment recommendations.

On New Year's, there was an argument at a house party in Skyway, south of Seattle, and gunfire erupted, police said. Barnes was connected to the shooting, said Sgt. Cindi West, King County Sheriff's spokeswoman.

Two of the three people who fled the scene were located. West said authorities were trying to find Barnes and had been in contact with his family to ask them to convince him to step forward and "tell his side of the story."

At Mount Rainier around 10:20 a.m. Sunday, the gunman had sped past a checkpoint to make sure vehicles have tire chains, which are sometimes necessary in snowy conditions, Bacher said.

One ranger began following him while Anderson, a 34-year-old mother of two young children who was married to another Mount Rainier park ranger, eventually blocked the road to stop the driver.

Before fleeing, the gunman fired shots at both Anderson and the ranger that trailed him, but only Anderson was hit.

Anderson would have been armed, as she was one of the rangers tasked with law enforcement, Bacher said. Pierce Co. Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said she was shot before she had even got out of the vehicle.

I find it interesting that a lot of comments focus on the politics of gun control instead of the heart of the issue, a walking wounded soldier that was in need of help. We do not know if he sought the help, turned down offers for help, or the details of the circumstances. However to talk around the heart of the issue is once again dissing service members when they return by not acknowleging their needs. They need more than a welcome home banner, backyard barbecue and cake that says "welcome home."

There's more to supporting our troops than just flying a flag on the 4th of July, and putting a bumper sticker on the Lexus ( professing our patriotism ). Time for true patriotic action.....the heroes are coming home..Volunteers .anyone.......or, are your paper flags, lapel ribbons and bumper sticker as far as you'll go ?

I hope I'm wrong, but I think it's pretty much assured that there'll be many more just like him ( with PTSD) coming home from war. We'd better have a damn good plan to treat their mental issues BEFORE the crisis, rather than after. They, and their loved ones, need to know that there's no shame in seeking help. Where are the ads, that should be flooding the airwaves to let them know ?

Especially with no jobs and the administration wanting to gut the military budget.
First to go is always reduction in troop levels.

Shouldn't we be discussing the insane law that permits loaded guns in state and federal parks? Park rangers with loaded guns are not prepared for the violence in today's culture. Really nobody is. But to allow loaded guns in areas of public use which do not have the understanding and support of their own administrators is doubly insane. Why not discuss getting this law repealed?

"Shouldn't we be discussing the insane law that permits loaded guns in state and federal parks? "

No, because criminals would not obey any such law in any case.

"But to allow loaded guns in areas of public use which do not have the understanding and support of their own administrators is doubly insane."

Hardly, given that parks are not free of violence by 2- and 4-footed predators. Further, misuse of lawful citizens who are licensed for concealed carry is very rare -- DO look that up.
04:23 PM on 01/03/2012
JiminHouston, well, is your point that loaded guns are ok in poorly policed areas in parks, where families go to enjoy peaceful serenity without even thinking of defending themselves from gun nuts or damaged war soldiers? National parks are not set up to police insane/sick individuals. We do not have park peace enforcers at this time. Your premise strikes me as odd because when we go to a park full of bears, wolves, mountain lions, cougars, eagles, bats, and other top of the food chain mammels just like us, we watch our p,s and q's. I guess we also need to stay away from other 2 footer humans, period, as Nancy Kriescher points out. Whether they have concealed guns or are flaming insane war damaged soldiers, we should be afraid. No more egalitarianism and peaceful loving existences for us humans. You are wrong, jiminHouston.

The laws against murder didn't seem to have any effect .Maybe thats because criminal, by definition, don't follow the law.

True, but like all laws involving citizen's rights to feel safe in a Free Society' There needs to be a LINE of demarcation' If we all, every human in this country, 24/7 wore complete body armor head to toe.. well. we would be safe from knives, bats, guns.but then we are not free. It hurts me now to know that every man, woman who served in Iraq, Afghan. comes home to a naive Public, that they are all understandably put on a gag order. like my hubby 80's. but this is differant" The very fact that they served, suffered, but they all have a right to talk about the experiance, not classified. there will always be people who enlist.. so that is not an issue.' Our country divides in two. one side wants openness, honesty, and make things better. the other, lives in a cocoon of denyal, angry rationale, they think medals, honors, flag waving, hand over heart, and a little mention of humanity, that does the dirty work.. is enough to welcome home traumatized souls, and never stop a second, to imagine, the horror show that goes on in their lives.. pretending to be ok, abiding by rules of the Military.

I guess so. I was flipping through the TV waiting for a game to come on and stumbled on Nancy Grace talking about this. She made it a point to say "tattooed up" each time she wanted a lawyer to say he was guilty. So, yes to some tattoos means you are guilty.

The V.A. does not care about veterans mental health problems, nor if they ever recover from there physical injuries in order to become someone productive of society. The only thing the V.A. care its to take away any monetary value(compensation) that the government as given to veterans due to their physical injuries, or mental illnesses cause by the war.

The VA is defined by three disctinct administrations, Cemetary, Benefits and Healthcare. The healthcare sector has been ready and prepared, and continues to be, for returning service members to receive the care they need. More so than the private sector ever can or will be. Before misinformation is diseminated, the facts need to be clear as to not disuade veterans from coming to receive the care they need.

You are so right, but sadly.....far too many Americans don't want to hear the truth. They only want to see Old Glory flapping in the wind, hear The Star Spangled Banner and think all returning soldiers are "heroes" when in fact they are simply people, who have seen horrible things they can never un-see.

We are going to pay a heavy, heavy price for what we have sent forth since 10/2001.

President Obama, in a Speech in Iowa, almost 3 yrs ago had a lengthy point on the need for more clinics for Mental Health, better pay, and more public understanding of the returning Veterans of these 2 recent Wars. I don't want to get Politicy here, just that he WAS the only Candidate to bring it up, 08' and still nothing, nothing, nada, fromany R' Party Candidate."

and in driving distance not 80 to 100 miles away. A civilian can get in to doctor for mental issues quicker. Vets Need Military Doctors, Counselors to talk to. felloship with those who know excactly what they are going through.' this young man may have already had a predisposition to going over the edge, prior to service." But our Vets are tossed out like tissue paper , a by product of of a served purpose.' This from a couple Vets today.' Some are alone, literally afraid to be around people, fear of that for differant reasons.' Flashbacks, night terrors, absolute reliving moments that never go away.' We all gather around on 9/11 to watch coverage.' Well this is sad, cause Vets suffer silently, while trying to be ""normal' their only life line is having services near. Just like AA' Nice post:)

Exactly. like usual, people see hear things pick up on some darkness there, and don't talk to someone, or express concern. It is difficult too." because he was a Vet." And It can be frightening." The Ranger, was a young lady. with 2 small children. She died alone away from family. the fear. the utter seconds of knowing.. she , her life was over. Same with Officer in Virginia.same with Afghan, vet in California shot ibn back, at a ""Party Homecoming.' It wasn't enough to have your brother home, but this man invited friends for the ""Party' and someone was upset, didn't get invited started fight, now Soldier paraylized.' He probably would have enjoyed a Peaceful Family only gathering."
