Ai Weiwei's 'Sunflower Seeds' Opens At Mary Boone Gallery In New York

Ai Weiwei's "Sunflower Seeds" is set for its New York debut Saturday at the Mary Boone Gallery. The installation originally premiered at The Tate in London and features over 100 million hand-painted ceramic sunflower seeds. That's right, hand-painted. If you haven't already watched this video about Weiwei's process, and the 1,600 people he employed to make the exhibit a reality, please drop everything you're doing and watch it now:

And this is what it looked like when it finally got to London:

As you can see, museum-goers in London were initially allowed to walk and play in the seeds. It was later discovered, however, that all this commotion was churning up toxic ceramic dust and visitors were then relegated to look at the seeds from behind a rope or from an observation deck. This is presumably how things will go in New York until February 7th when the exhibit ends.

2011 was a big year for Ai. His detention by government officials at a Hong Kong airport made headlines across the globe, and his fame swelled as he remained missing for a fraught 81 days. Released finally in June, Ai was hit with a $2.4 million bill for back taxes and penalties-- charges he says are politically motivated.

Time named him one of their "Persons Of The Year," Art Review named him the art world's most powerful figure, and back in New York (where Ai lived in the 80s) this past summer, his exhibit "Zodiac Signs/Circle Heads" opened in Central park.

This is a perfect blend of an aesthetic concept, collective artisanal production, socio political commentary and economic investment. It is a beautiful idea executed in an equally beautiful way and stands as a testament to Ai Wei Wei's artistic vision. The fact that the changes had to be made to the way that viewers experienced the installation due to unforeseen circumstances injects a Duchampian element that expands the conceptual resonance of the work.

Just because he's an artist is no reason for doing this mess. And it's also poison to people who breath the air that comes from it. I think it should be banned and especially for the young and old! Just saying...

Maybe noble but to me it makes no sense.

Absolutely astonishing, I would love to have just one.
The highest respect for all who helped make this. Pride and honor in an art form rarely seen anymore. So simple yet so profound. Ai Weiwei, one of the few artist in the art world who deserves to be honored. Thanks for making art that speaks volumes not art that comes with a dog and pony show.

Next comes the CD of people crunching across them walking with different rhythms and of course the e-bay art sales.

I wonder what they will be bid up to per pound at Sotheby's auction.

The first video was interesting but couldn't they find something better to make? Osama plates maybe - or even better Osama skeet - that would be a big seller in Texas!

I think you may be missing the point of the sunflower seeds. Mao portrayed himself as a sun surrounded by sunflowers. 1600 people were sponsored through Ai Weiwei and worked to create these sunflower seeds (more than 100 million) from the raw materials. Prior to the project, the artesians in the town were without work because other sponsors were bankrupt.

Mao sunflower seeds is same thing as making millions of miniature Hitler swastikas.
Both stand for oppression and murder of masses. You call that art?
