'Pawn Stars': Rick Gets Bad News About His Strongbox Purchase (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/03/12 05:46 AM ET Updated: 01/03/12 06:04 AM ET

The guys of "Pawn Stars" (Mon., 10 p.m. EST on History) are good, but they're not perfect. Though in hindsight, the Old Man always seems to become that way. He was on hand again this time to tell his son and co-owner RIck Harrison that he knew better. Of course he did.

Rick got excited about a purported 19th century strongbox, and so he bought it before he brought in his expert to appraise it. Normally, Rick has a good eye for what's fake and what's real, but the attention to detail and quality of the piece must have blinded him. It was a fake.

"I thought it was fake to start with," the Old Man told him. When Rick challenged him, asking him why then he'd let him spend the store's money on it, the Old Man replied, "I didn't want to bust your bubble." He followed it up with, "Now I can holler at you."

See what treasures and trash the guys discover on "Pawn Stars" every Monday night at 10 p.m. EST on History.

I love Pawn Stars but they have to be the most disfunctional familys ever. They continually disrespect each other and never very supportive of each other. But then again maybe it's just an act.I wouldn't put it past Rick to try to pass off that strong box as authentic, to an unsuspecting customer,if he can find one.

the PTB are pushing these shows because the economy is tanking, and it is a great time for Those With Money" to buy up all the good stuff.

This is always a fun show to watch. I wonder though, what they actually get from reselling the pieces they purchase on the show?
02:02 PM on 01/03/2012
They make sooo much $$$ from the show itself, I don't really think it matters.

For being so many yars in the biz he always has to call in a so-called expert to help him. The best part is when American Restorations (Rick Dale) continually rips him off on repairs/restoration. Another idiot that after so many years of ripping people of,l he knows very little about anything. There are many restorers in the L.A. and Las Vegas area that can do as good a job or better for 1/2 of what he charges Rick. ha ha ha I hope he gets stiffed many more times.

To think I skipped right by "Mob Wives" Renee Graziano and her travails to see what Rick and Chumlee were up to. My day is ruined now. Thanks a lot Rick.

This is great entertainment, but that's exactly what it is - entertainment. When it first aired it was possible to believe that Rick, through the years, had built quite a memory reserve and a passing knowledge of many items and backgrounds. However, when you watch the show it appears that even Chumless has expert status on some items. They are amusing but this show has to be scripted and some of the people that we see in the shop - actors.
Even the Clark County museum curator is too good to be true, at least without prior knowledge of an item and a chance to do some research.
So, did Rick buy a fake? Maybe, maybe not as publicity is publicity and the more viewers the higher the ad space between.

I've always wondered about that myself, especially watching something like "Antiques Roadshow." Sometimes people will come in with an item the appraiser says is incredibly rare and only 10 exist in the world. If so few exist, what are the chances that that appraiser has ever come across it before in order to be an expert on it. I don't mind if they take time to do research, but the shows should show them doing the research.

Thank you, I am glad there is more than I. Watching Rick do some of the art peices, especially the numbered "etchings" made me wonder. It's and early form of lithography - and it's complicated, the same as most early lithographs. Many were hand colored and to have "near expert" status on this requires a lot of study. Some of those on the roadshow have been doing certain areas all of their lives and are "expert" in given areas and "knowledgeable" in others, but Rick seems to have a wider scope than all.
They don't have time to show research, besides it would do little for the show.

All about being entertaining - which it is.

The entire show is just a staged act. Accept it for that and not 'reality' and you're fine. The folks who are 'selling' are either selected by the producers, ill-informed, stupid, or dupes. The Harrisons buy for pennies on the dollar and use the oldest dealing and closing lines in the pawn/antique dealer/flea market business. Anyone who still falls for that stuff is pretty naive ...

The pawn shop in Reno has a line out the door, allowing patrons & gawkers to enter in little groups and walk through to look at cheesy junk in a few showcases. Most of the floor just sells Pawn Stars trinkets (t-shirts, mugs, bobbleheads, etc) and very few "valuable" antiques; everything is over-priced.

None of the cast are visible - it probably distracts from actual sales - and the staff on the floor are rude. Scuttlebutt is there's a duplicate set behind the store where filming is done.

The shop is in Vegas, not Reno.
