Rick Santorum: 'I Feel Sorry' For Man Who Glitter-Bombed Me

First Posted: 01/03/12 01:19 PM ET Updated: 01/03/12 01:19 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- On Dec. 30, a man threw glitter on Rick Santorum at a campaign stop in Johnston, Iowa, yelling, "Stop the hate! Taste the rainbow!" The incident was part of a spate of "glitter-bombing" of public figures, meant to protest anti-gay policies. It started in May, when activist Nick Espinosa threw glitter on Newt Gingrich.

When asked by conservative Iowa radio host Jan Mickelson about the glitter-bombing on Tuesday, Santorum said he felt "sorry" for the man.

It's one of those things where there are a lot of people out there who are hurting, who are struggling with a lot of different issues. My feeling is, that's part when you open yourself up to the public, you're going to get good things happen to you and not so nice things. What I'm taking the approach of is you move on. I feel sorry for that man that he felt like he was compelled he had to do that. Like I do, what I'm supposed to do, is you know, according to our faith, is to pray for them, and I hope people work that out.

Mickelson sympathized with Santorum, saying, "I'm not encouraging people to do this, but if you ever want to see hate, just enter Rick Santorum's name on the Internet and just see what the gay lobby has tried to do to Rick Santorum. If there ever was an example of seething, satanic, wicked hatred directed toward a decent person, it's that. And when I saw that guy do that to you, I just wish I had been there."

Santorum is an ardent opponent of LGBT rights, saying that children raised by same-sex couples will lead to "dysfunction" in society and that the "country will fall" as a result of same-sex marriage.

I feel sorry for someone who wants to blame priest sexual abuse of minors on liberalism or the victims instead of the predators and their enablers.  Shame he can't muster any sympathy for the victims instead of rushing to defend the indefensible simply because they are members of the hierarchy of the Church.  You cannot be a good Catholic and defend members of the Church regardless of their  Read More...

Nobody needs Santorum's prayers as much as they need him to stop promoting hate against people who are not just like him. If he can't see that he is contributing to hate & bullying, helping to create hurt, no one needs his prayers, they need his actions here in Earth.

I feel sorry for my friends and relations who have somehow been smitten with the right-wing bug. I hope there is a cure.

I don't like what the guy says to Santorum. It's just not catchy or quirky enough. I'd prefer "Now you look fabulous!"

Mr Santorum was covered by glitter, one of his campaign assistants named it herpes. Well, the glitter can be brushed off. The offences Santorum made to Homosexual people and, people that had an abortion is not that easy to be brushed away. But every time Santorum points at his "faith" that makes him offending these people, I remember how many children were raped by the professionals in that "faith".

Got glitter boomed and about 2 weeks later was standing before a jury arguing my case and looked down only to see sparkles coming out of the design in the leather on my wingtips.

I agree with Santorum's comment wholeheartedly -- "I feel sorry for that man that he felt like he was compelled he had to do that..." -- each and everytime I hear him open his mouth and rail against equal rights, gay marriage and the re-instatement of DADT. If anybody was ever in need of pity -- its a hate-monger like Santorum who hides behind his purported religious positions to attack others.

There is no more hate-motivated person than someone who says they "love" the poor sinners whom they are condemning and trying to take rights away from. They seem to smile sympathetically as they stick in the knife. That's Santorum and Bachmann as well.

Go away Little Dicky Sanctimonious, go far far away, take your flock of fool supporters, form your own little "nation" and spend the rest of your sad little "lives" spying on each other to make sure no one would "turn gay."

There are some republicans who do not believe in same-sex marriage. They also believe that homosexuality is a sin. They do not try and beleaguer the public with constant disgusting remarks about the gay "lifestyle" and they do not say vile things.

Everyone has a right to what they believe. Your beliefs do not get to infringe on other's rights. And when you spew hatred and foul things about human beings, expect some of us to throw the metaphorical monkey feces at you.

Count yourself lucky it's glitter and not /actual/ monkey feces.

Santorum is one of the last of what we should hope is a nearly vanished breed of American Politician. They advocated laws against Asians, Germans, Irish, and of course blacks...any blacks they could legislate to be blacks. He needs to be folded into the history of America under "really sorry people."
