Equinox Ads By Terry Richardson Invite Criticism Over Skinny Models (PHOTOS, POLL)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/04/12 02:25 PM ET Updated: 01/04/12 02:25 PM ET

Do you go to the gym to get healthy and strong -- or skinny and sexy?

Luxury fitness chain Equinox has placed its bets with the latter, producing a slick ad campaign for its gyms shot by Terry Richardson. In typical Terry Richardson fashion, the photos are overtly sexual and feature plenty of slender, half-clothed women with red lips and "come hither" eyes.

What the photos don't show, however, is women -- or the men, for that matter -- exercising. Instead, they lay on the couch, arm wrestle on a fancy dining room table and tool around on bikes, all in sumptuous landscapes and what must be very expensive clothes.

Only beneath the photos is there any indication that the ads are for a gym: words like "Rejuvenation," "Flexibility" and, oddly, "Victory."

As advertising for a fitness center, the whole endeavor seems misguided. Sure, the photos are eye-catchingly sexy. But how exactly are they promoting fitness? And what does sex have to do with it? And moreover, why are the women so darn skinny and waif-like?

Fashionista pointed out that certain Equinox customers are asking the same questions, posting comments on Equinox's Facebook page like, "Another couple million spent on the degradation of women. Good work fitness guys." Another Facebook user wrote:

Why did all of the models have a runway physique? Equinox is promoting health and fitness, so I would like to see some healthy and fit women on their ad campaigns who look like they could actually survive a typical Equinox class.. Can we maybe see a little bit if muscle on the ladies next time around? The Nike ads are great examples of strong, fit women!

It's not totally inaccurate to depict slender models working out (after all, most of the top models you see on magazine covers and runways do, in fact, exercise).

But such racy, fashion-y photos do seem to miss the objectives of physical fitness, which include getting healthy (not unhealthily skinny), building muscle definition (which the male models have but the women, not so much) and feeling good about one's physique (which we're guessing is not best accomplished by showing average women pictures of size 2 models).

This isn't the first time Terry Richardson has done a sex-as-exercise project for Equinox: he shot a quite similar campaign in 2010. So apparently the response was good enough the first time for Equinox to give the fashion photog another shot. After all, sex sells.

But forget what the advertisers think -- what do you think?

The new Equinox marketing campaign is very offensive and "in your face" with objectification of women and sending a message of male dominance. The electronic billboard inside the Palo Alto gym faces the child care center where this controversial, pornographic material rotates where children can watch, this lacks basic decency. The lack of diversity and the super thin, not-muscular women sends a message that women don't need or deserve. Walking into the gym with these images showing is not empowering and not related to health or fitness. A petition circulated in Palo Alto, quickly signed by many female members who are irritated that a "high end" gym would stoop so low however it was made clear that the campaign comes out of New York and the local objections of members will not be considered. The corporate decision to bring these insulting images into communities across the country show a lack of sensitivity to the members, their children who attend child care, and the rights of women to be respected and treated with dignity. If Equinox cared about it's members they would listen to the many objections to remove the offensive images. Our country deserves better. Time to quit the membership and support businesses with values that reflect a healthy society.

The controversy is over being too skinny? I thought it was over forcing those gay guys to do unnatural acts with women.

Gay men and sexy women? To whom does this make sense?

If there is anything to know about Terry Richardson it's that this is exactly the type of photography that he does. Every campaign is controversial for being over sexualized. Undoubtedly, Equinox hired him for exactly that reason - to be shocking and create a buzz. Personally, I used to think his photos were interesting in that they exaggerated sexuality so far that it almost pokes fun at our obsession with it. It seems a bit trite to me now.

Ick. 1, 2 and 7 look like pictures from "gentlemen's magazines" except that the women have no curves.

This isn't just selling a membership to the gym, it's eluding to the possibility of a more elite "membership" of life. Put down the cheeseburger and stop complaining about unhealthy body images, people. It's an ad, nothing more. Why don't we go sue Nissan for their new truck ads, with the Frontier helping land a commercial airliner. That's not so real either. I find it interesting how people pick their battles...

Some people are born that way. Most are not. Advertisements for gyms, cosmetic surgery, etc are aspirational. It's too bad that even going to the gym and having cosmetic surgery couldn't make 99% of us look like that. Better you should do everything in moderation and have a good life :)

I'm not condoning these ads but sex sells, always has, always will.

Another fitness center that only wants members who are already toned and hot. No point in going to this gym unless you don't need to be there.
11:36 AM on 01/06/2012
Do you honestly think that once you are fit and toned you no longer need to go to the gym? You believe that there is not work in maintaining a healthy and fit figure?

That's shocking!
