New Girl Scout Cookie: Savannah Smiles Celebrates Girl Scouts' 100th Year

First Posted: 01/04/12 06:02 PM ET Updated: 01/05/12 09:14 AM ET

It's Girl Scout cookie season again, and this year there's a new girl in town to celebrate the Scouts' 100th anniversary. Welcome to the clique, Savannah Smiles. The Girl Scouts Cookies website describe the cookie:

Celebrate the anniversary of the Girl Scouts with these bite-sized, lemon-wedge cookies dusted in powdered sugar and bursting with lemon flavor. Enjoy these delightful treats, remember where Girl Scouts began ...and smile.

The cookie's name was inspired by the hometown of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low.

Little Brownie Bakers, the company that manufactures the cookie, is pretty jazzed up about the cookie:

Each year, thousands of Girl Scouts visit the founder's historical home, a National Historic Landmark in Savannah. In the time-worn rooms, each girl considers how, 100 years later, Juliette Low's story encourages her to dream big and do great things with her life.

That's why we are so proud to offer this special cookie that will delight customers and remind girls of their rich heritage and unlimited future.

We're not sure we think of dreaming big and doing great things as we bite into lemony cookies, but sure, whatever floats your boat.

Girl Scout cookie season varies by region, find out how to buy cookies in your region here.

When I heard about this, I first thought they might have named the cookie after the movie from the 80s. Have they not heard of Google? Other people might think this as well.

I cannot believe the price of Girl Scout Cookies. My niece lives in Virginia, and I bought a few boxes from her @ 3.50/box. That's pricey enough, but I live in NYS, and the Girl Scouts here are selling them for $4.00/box. Really??? I'm sorry, but that's getting utterly ridiculous. At some point, you have to just stop, or before you know it, these cookies will shoot to $8.00 a box! This will be the last year that I buy them. I know it's for a good cause, but guess what? So are lottery tickets, and I don't buy them.

Two phrases: Gluten Free; Sugar Free. Girl Scouts, we know you can do it! See my post: http://www.glutenfreesafari.com/1/post/2012/03/girl-scout-cookies-still-none-that-are-gluten-free-what-gives.html

Too bad some of us have ABC Cookies, who have no new cookie to celebrate the 100th Anniversary. And yes, Little Brownie Bakers are the superior cookie baking company, with the correct names!!

How depressing that we do not get them knocking on our doors here in Australia. It would be lovely to buy these delicious treats from these girls !

The taste of the cookies will depend which contracted company is making the cookies. Last year the ones in my area were from the ABC instead of the superior Little Brownie Bakers.

I was in Girl Scouts until I graduated high school 2 years ago. They have come up with several new flavors in the past few years, and most of them have been pretty bad and cancelled after a year or two. Hopefully these are different!

I thought about supporting the Girl Scouts by buying a box or two, until I looked them up to find out they have several feminist ties.

Why we allow hateful ideologues to corrupt our children is beyond me

Feminist: advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men. Um...and what is wrong with that? I will continue to support the Girl Scouts--who are not homophobes like the BOY Scouts. And I will buy a couple of extra boxes to make up for what you don't buy.

unfortunately, what feminists say, and what feminists do, are drastically different things. And what purpose do you have for even bringing up the boy scouts? This isn't a "which scout is better argument (boy scouts are better, btw)
Feminists have never cared about equality, they've always fought for rights, yet fought against the responsibility that comes with them which, by definition, is privilege.

It's about the Hateful feminist ideologues with the agenda of indoctrinating little girls into believing ridiculous theories like "The Patriarchy" which is a term that's been miss-used by feminists so much that it no longer applies to reality (or historical reality)

Nope. Sorry.
Yours is one of the expected response from a person who is told that everything they think they know is wrong.

Though the more common response is "!!!RAGE!!! YOU MISOGYNIST HOW DARE YOU REFUSE TO DEIFY WOMEN !!!RAGE!!!"

Considering most people are overweight and trying to lose it, the GSA should focus on trying to sell something HEALTHY these days. Who needs more cookies for goodness sakes!
08:51 PM on 01/07/2012
Those of us who aren't overweight. Screw healthy, they're cookies!! They're not meant to be healthy. If you want healthy, don't buy them.

It's also really OK to have a cookie now and then - it's called self control. I've lost 20 pounds over the last 3.5 months and still ordered a few boxes of Girl Scout cookies to support my niece. It's really not the end of the world.

dee and Autumn- You missed my point. The fact is, it would be good business practice to offer a healthy choice as well as the not so healthy. This would broaden their customer base therefore, broaden their fundraising capabilities. I'm not a McDonalds advocate but an example would be McDonalds now offering yogurt/fruit, oatmeal and salad options, this has increased their customer base and profit. GSA should consider offering a heathy bar, it would pay off for them ten fold. BTW, I've always been thin because I eat healthy. Congratulations on the weight loss.

This isn't the girl scout cookie with Medical M in it, is it?
12:33 PM on 01/07/2012
that's actually a specific type of plant for the bay area, not an actual cookie lol

too bad that the girl scout company continues to put the wrong house on their boxes and any merchandise. That house on the box is the house that Juliette was born in - NOT the house where the girl Scouts was founded.

I was a Brownie, Girl Sout and Cadet in the 60's and 70's. I was a Brownie, GS and Cadet leader during the last decade. Lemon cookies have come and gone throughout all this time and I for one wish GSA would JUST KEEP "lemon coolers" year in! They are soo good with iced tea! Yummmm

I also was a Brownie, Girl Scout and Cadet leader in Montrose, PA. My two sisters and I were at Camp Archbald, PA for two weeks each Summer. What a great experience! and loved being in the lake swimming, canoeing, hiking, learning which trees were which, camping, etc. Learned a lot in those days and never forgot that wonderful experience. When I was older and married, my husband and friends decided to go hiking...well, my husband said he wasn't really in favor of it b/c he was bitching and moaning all the way. So, when he said we had to stop hiking I told him..."Ok, stay here, but I am continuing on... and I also said, "I hope you know which way to go, because with my experience I'll be out of the woods in no time and you will still be wandering around trying to figure YOUR way out. Good luck stupid. Divorced him years later.

Whoops, I posted a copy and it was a pattern...lol

Anyway, I had typed that these are not new but used to be called Lemon Coolers. Great cookies, very addictive. I've spent time online looking for copycat recipes to no avail. I'll be grabbing a couple boxes of these if budget permits (not cheap at all).

As for the Girl Scouts, it isn't a corporation but an organization. Very beneficial to children and the community both. Teaches charity work, education, communication and social responsibility. Nice values esp in this time of ME!ME!ME!

I used to buy Lemon Coolers all the time. Was sorry to see them discontinued for the lemon creme cookies; glad they brought them back. Have already bought a few boxes from a co-worker's daughter.
02:19 PM on 01/07/2012
Do the girl scouts sell cookies made by a corporation?
03:01 PM on 01/07/2012
I think there are two bakers - one is called ABC Bakers and the other is Little Brownie Bakers. There could be more, but those are the two I'm aware of from when I sold Girl Scout cookies.
