Andrzej Sobiepan, Polish Art Student, Hangs Own Painting In Museum

WARSAW, Poland — Art student Andrzej Sobiepan didn't want to wait decades for his work to appear in museums. So he took matters in his own hands, covertly hanging one of his paintings in a major Polish gallery.

By Wednesday, the young artist was getting plenty of attention after a nationwide TV channel reported on his stunt at the National Museum in the southwestern city of Wroclaw. He told reporters he hoped galleries would give more exhibition space to young artists as a result.

"I decided that I will not wait 30 or 40 years for my works to appear at a place like this," Sobiepan told TVN24. "I want to benefit from them in the here and now."

Sobiepan, a Wroclaw Fine Arts Academy student whose last name means "his own master," said he was inspired by the elusive British graffiti artist known only as Banksy. His own painting is small, white and green, and partly uses swine leather to show a drooping acacia leaf.

On Dec. 10, Sobiepan put it up in a room with contemporary Polish art when a guard at the museum was looking the other way. Museum officials didn't notice the new painting for three days.

Museum director Mariusz Hermansdorfer told TVN24 on Wednesday that the action revealed some security breaches, but that he also considered it a "witty artistic happening."

"It has shown that the young generation of artists, unlike their predecessors, wants to see their works in museums," Hermansdorfer said.

The museum has kept the painting on display – in its cafe. It will be offered for sale at Poland's biggest charity auction on Sunday.

think huffpo needs to show the actual painting but also think it's cool that there are real artists yet to be found. Paintings are similar to photography.. but just depends on how you view things in your mind. I prefer b/w photography although ol Clark (yes still around) has stopped cutting real b/w film. Only cuts fake b/w film (C-41) They send real b/w film to someone else so if you need to scan the negatives because Clark is normally horrid at their prints.. may have to wait a bit for the curling to go down. or a professional scanner machine that takes rolls.

I love this because it is a positive way of instituting change and getting people to think about things in a different way. No damage, no one was hurt, and the reaction was appropriately light-hearted by the museum director who could appreciate the effort. It probably drove more folks to the museum as well, which is a win for everyone.

Congrats to the young artist for his courage and risk as well as his talents! Risk taking is part of success...it isn't all talent.

Loved this video!!!
It's a shame the article doesn't link to this. The Pink Panther theme was very appropriate and your camera work was wonderful :)
Awesome to see the actual artwork and artist as well as seeing it all go down. Well done.

The actual art (and that is NOT Andrzej Sobiepan's art pictured above), is not "my cup o' tea", in fact, in my ever so humble opinion, I wouldn't call it, "art". BUT....to each his own. I have to hand it to him....the guy was certainly gutsy, and is garnering publicity...so good for him! He didn't hurt anyone or anything, and benefitted himself with this stunt. As a side note...I really wish HuffPo wouldn't use misleading pictures....it would be nice to see the ACTUAL photo related to the ACTUAL story.

If the curator really wants to encourage young artists, maybe they should keep one of their rooms, their smallest or just a small wall, for young and up-coming artists to show their work. They could change it out every quarter year and then after it's showing it could be put in your gift shop if the artist wishes to sell it.

Of course you won't show a picture of the actual painting....

I did a little searching online and found the Youtube video this artist made of him putting his work in the museum. I saw the painting. I looked like his version of the leaf of a fern.
Not my taste but I still admire the guy's moxey!

My coment should have read, this student DIDN'T remove a painting to display his work....

I don't condone anyone breaking laws. This art student remove a painting to display his work. And if that picture is done by him he has great talent. To Oakhilliron in a previous post. Would you rather have this guy out on the streets making nothing of his life? Being a burden to society, perhaps a gang member, thief or rapiest? Where is it written that we have to be dead to be fully recognized? To have our likeness on a stamp? Why cant we enjoy our fame while we are living. Very many famed people became famous after death. This guy is working hard to be a painter and maybe there should be space in our nicer museums for the newbies that are good enough to show.

It doesn't say that he removed any paintings. Do you think they wouldn't notice a painting taken down for 3 days?

SWEET! I like this guy. Maybe he will, with this stunt, get some commissions and earn some real money.
