The Basics
, a family-friendly resort located about 20 miles from Pennsylvania's capital, Harrisburg, and a little more than an hour from Baltimore, Maryland, offers area skiers and snowboarders a convenient and affordable way to enjoy a day on the slopes. This resort, which was formerly known as Ski Roundtop, features slopes that are pretty evenly distributed between beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The owners of Roundtop Mountain Resort, which has been open since 1964, also manage nearby Liberty Mountain and Whitetail resorts, so season passes purchased at one are good at all three mountains.
The Mountain
The Roundtop Mountain area isn't blessed with a ton of snow -- approximately
on average a year. To make up for this, Roundtop creates a lot of its own snow. Unfortunately, the pack can, at times, be hard and icy. The longest run on the
mountain is 4,100 feet long, and its vertical drop is listed at 600 feet. Depending on weather conditions, Roundtop's skiing season runs typically from mid-December through the middle of March.
Trails And Lifts

, Roundtop features 16 trails, with 28 percent rated easy, 37 percent intermediate and 24 percent tagged as expert level. The slopes are
by three quad and three triple lifts, as well as one carpet lift and a J-bar. Roundtop is open for night skiing and also has
, as well as a half-pipe, for general shredding. The resort's beginner slopes, such as
, have been designed in such a way as to separate beginners from more advanced skiers, giving them a chance to boost their confidence on their own terms before moving up to more difficult slopes.

Roundtop Mountain Resort, along with its sister resorts, Liberty and Whitetail, were awarded the National Ski Areas Association

recreational racing every Friday night. Talented skiers and snowboarders should be on the lookout for the Roundtop Mountain Resort's park crew, which films weekly segments in the terrain parks called

Cost
The
at Roundtop Mountain Resorts are kept at a reasonable, family-friendly level, with four-hour flex tickets starting at $46 for a weekday and going up to $55 on weekends. Juniors, ages 6 to 12, pay $41 to $48 for the four-hour flex. The price for a beginner's class that includes rentals ranges from $60 to $84. Lesson packages for children, ages 4 to 12, range from $67 to $102. The best deals are season passes, which start at $639 and give the owner access to Roundtop, as well as its nearby sister slopes, Liberty and Whitetail. The mountain also offers specials, such as a four-hour $35 ski package that includes rentals for college students on Wednesdays. Guests in need of ski or snowboard gear can rent it from Roundtop for $40 a day. Helmets are also available for $12.
