Rick Santorum Called Mormonism 'Dangerous Cult' In Minds Of 'Some Christians' In 2007

WASHINGTON -- Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who has suddenly become Mitt Romney's top challenger for the Republican presidential nomination, raised a provocative question about Romney's Mormon faith in a 2007 newspaper column:

Would the potential attraction to Mormonism by simply having a Mormon in the White House threaten traditional Christianity by leading more Americans to a church that some Christians believe misleadingly calls itself Christian, is an active missionary church, and a dangerous cult?

His next paragraph began: "Assume for the sake of argument that there are valid considerations."

The column was Santorum's response to Romney's famous "Faith in America" address, in which the former Massachusetts governor tried to reassure evangelical Christians and other religious voters that he shared their values. Santorum's ultimate verdict on Romney was more or less positive: "He should be a viable choice for voters whose faith matters to them," Santorum wrote.

But throughout the piece, Santorum drew distinctions between Mormonism and Christianity that others have avoided lest they seem overly inflammatory in a political context.

For instance, Santorum wrote of Romney's speech, "He tried to address the questions by discussing Jesus, suggesting that the specific theological tenets of Mormonism are not in any important respect different from those of traditional Christianity. I disagree."

Romney was the highest-ranking lay leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Boston. And skepticism if not fear of his deep Mormon faith is widely considered to be a significant and ongoing problem for him among evangelical voters in particular.

A top Romney adviser recently told The Huffington Post's Howard Fineman that "the Mormon factor" is "just a fact of life that we know we have to deal with."

Santorum's come-from-way-behind showing in the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday could be attributed in no small part to the fact that several prominent state preachers suddenly endorsed him when all the other "anybody but Romney" candidates had crashed and burned, one after the other.

About 60 percent of Iowa's GOP caucus-goers self-identify as evangelical, and according to CNN entrance polling suggets that Santorum got 34 percent of their votes, compared to 14 percent for Romney.

The undercurrent of anti-Mormon concern has only occasionally risen to the surface of the political discourse. One notable exception came in October, when a prominent Texas pastor who introduced Texas Gov. Rick Perry at the Values Voters Summit called Mormonism a "cult."

In an October interview on Fox News, Santorum was asked if he thinks Mormonism is a cult, and he replied, "No, I don't." He added, "I'm not an expert on Mormonism. All I know is that every Mormon I know is a good and decent person, has great moral values and, by and large, with the exception of Harry Reid, by and large, pretty consistent in the values that I share and that things I want to see happen to this country. And that's what he should be judged on."

Santorum has made his fierce adherence to conservative Roman Catholic "family values" a keystone of his campaign, most recently saying he believes states should have the right to outlaw birth control and sodomy without the interference of the Supreme Court and that gay marriage could doom the United States.

In his 2007 column, Santorum made it clear he thinks matters of faith are fair game. He quoted Romney as saying that "a person should not be rejected ... because of his faith." Then he wrote, "His supporters say it is akin to rejecting a Barack Obama because he is black. But Obama was born black; Romney is a Mormon because he accepts the beliefs of the Mormon faith. This permits us, therefore, to make inferences about his judgment and character, good or bad."

Santorum is certainly not the only one of the current barrel-full of Tepublicans who hold the belief that Mormonism is a deviation from traditional religious belief and as the primary battles become more pitched millions of dollars will be spent by super-PACs to discredit Mr. Romney's legitimacy as a "real" American. As seen over the first three years of Obama's Presidency, his enemies have seized on every  Read More...

What's the point in banging on about the American "Separation of Church and State" if you just go right ahead and vote candidates into power on the strength of their religious beliefs?

Is Mormonism a cult? I guess individuals should personally investigate the teachings themselves and come to their own conclusion.

They utilize the King James Version of the Bible and have distributed bibles around the world.
Although I do not agree with Smith, the founder, if this church follows the Bible as other denominations, they are very similar.

I hope everyone who reads anything the media chooses to post knows the difference between "cult" and "occult" it is important that you educate yourself simply for the fact that by definition nearly every religion could be considered a cult. Google cult vs occult, expand your mind, don't fall victim to the slander that the media likes to force upon it's sheeple.

Everything I've seen in this campaign when Mormonism is brought into contract with Evangelicals points out that it's the Evangelicals that are the dangerous cult - they are bigoted, narrow minded and tyranical. Mormons show thoughtfulness, high moral standards and true Christian charity. I'd take a Mormon any day over what the Evangelicals (and in this case an unusually odd Catholic) have had to offer.

On the moral compass I believe we vote for a candidate on their values and what they will stand for and will do for our country, not because of their religion. I am a born-again Christian and a passionate Romney supporter. Frankly I don't believe any more in Judaism and Catholicism than Mormonism but I do believe in Mitt Romney's ability to lead our country better than anyone else in this election!

Dear Santorum, if you truly are interested in the dangers that lurk here I leave a job http://www.newser.com/tag/51558/1/pedophilia-scandal-in-catholic-church.html Now, if your interests are not sincere but selfish. ignore it and pretend it does not turn.

It is outrageous that a political handle anti-Mormon feelings fans for their personal interests. Is low. It's dirty. It is immoral. History has shown us right through the centuries, those who have used these dirty tricks, has to be barbarians and tyrants. This is immoral ..

If Santorum both concerned about the religion, should first worry pedophile scandals of the Catholic Church, that most of their ecclesiastical leaders if they really are evil, criminals and pedophiles. If they are truly a danger to children everywhere.

I was Mormon for 20 years. The first 10 I would have vehemently denied I was in a cult. Eventually the mind control and weirdness took its toll. I became uncomfortable with forced conformity, and their technique that I learned later is called "emotional tagging."

I found an article on the internet one day definitively proving Joseph Smith a fraud. (Book of Abraham merely an egyptian funerary text) As I researched, I became sickened at the depth and breadth of the deception the Mormon Church foists on its people. If you could ask any of the 1,000 - 2,000 people that leave the LDS church every month (including me), they will most certainly tell you it is a cult.

The leadership KNOWS its history is fraudulent, and I would daresay that Romney does too. He has been high enough up in the church to be part of the elite.

If Romney becomes president, hopefully it would eventually become the ruination of the LDS church. Four years is a long time, something will happen to make the church look bad and they will try to twist it like everything else the church twists and lies about. The other candidates are scary, but Romney implies a new kind of evil to the Presidency that none of us has seen the likes of.

Wow you're a real oak. This is sad! 20 years in the Church and you read one anti-Mormon article on the web and you're shaken to the core? I think you left out the second 10 years where you gave up studying the scriptures for anti literature. Questions are good, but if you didn't find them right away your first mistake was replacing them so easily with doubts of the whole gospel. Doubt never built faith. I've been a member 32 years + and had every position in the church below a Stake Presidency and I can assure you it's the farthest thing from a cult.
"Mind control"? Don't you mean freedom through obedience? You know, like stopping at a stoplight? By controlling an appetite to speed through, you avoid possible pain and sorrow.
Or perhaps you meant controlling your thoughts from dwelling on idle and degrading material. That's your job, no one else is going to do it for you.

Weirdness? Maybe. But if honoring my wife, avoiding the filth of mainstream media, and serving others without expectation of reward is weird, sign me up!!

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a non-profit legal watchdog group dedicated to holding public officials accountable for their actions, named Senator Rick Santorum as one of the most corrupt members of Congress in their 2006 report. This second annual report on the most corrupt members of Congress entitled Beyond DeLay: The 20 Most Corrupt Members of Congress (and five to watch) was an encyclopedic report on corruption in the 109th Congress which documented the egregious, unethical and possibly illegal activities of the most tainted members of Congress. CREW compiled the members’ transgressions and analyzed them in light of federal laws and congressional rules.

I'm very appalled with everyone that has posted. First and for most, I'm a member of the church of JESUS CHRIST of latter day saints. Before you guys bash my religion please get everything right. I am a Mormon and we are Christians. We are not a cult. If you actually understood my faith you would know that and would be defending the church. Have we ever been mean to you? I don't think so. We stand up for what we believe in. Noticed how Jesus Christ is all capitalized? Its because we are Christ's church. Everyone that have been bashing the church on this message board or any other message boards, I invite you to read the Book of Mormon and study it and ponder it out. Pray to Heavenly Father to know the truth and if the Book of Mormon is true. If we are Christians or not. Because I can guarantee that the answer you get will be that we are.

So much for the "Romney/Santorum" ticket....That would have been a pretty strong ticket.....Probably no "Romney/Gingrich" either....

Romney/Huntsman..!?!? The "ALL MORMON" ticket..
Romney/Pawlenty...!?!? Can't win the South....
Romney/Gingrich...!?!?

Romney/Christie or Romney/Daniels.......Daniels is in trouble......Can't win Florida.....
