'The Rosie Show': RuPaul Surprises 11-Year Old Designer And Super Fan (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/04/12 05:53 AM ET Updated: 01/04/12 10:36 AM ET

Since second or third grade, 11-year old Ben said he's been teased for not being "the stereotype boy that likes to go and play football or baseball." On "The Rosie Show" (Weeknights, 7 p.m. EST on OWN) he talked about how his passion has instead been fashion for as long as he could remember.

He's always been interested in clothing and design, and is involved in designing fashions now. One of Ben's biggest inspirations has always been RuPaul, and so Rosie O'Donnell had RuPaul on to meet his young fan.

"I am so excited for you because you ahve so much energy and so much creativity," RuPaul told young Ben, who'd yet to be able to pick his jaw up from the floor. "You're going to set this world on fire, kiddo." That's the kind of positive affirmation and support Ben needs to hear to continue pursuing his dreams and passion for fashion.

Catch "The Rosie Show" weeknights at 7 p.m. EST on OWN.

Great kid. Great mom! And good on Rosie and Ru Paul for encouraging this kid in his pursuits.

It is so refreshing to see something like this where the child has supportive parents and no drama.

I knew I was gay when I was four years old. I had a dream that pretty much told me so. I won't go into that dream right here! So it's great to see this kid on TV being himself, and being allowed to be that. Thanks Rosie and Ru for making it happen.

"I knew I was gay when I was four years old." Me too. Remarkable and unbelievable... but true.

If only every parent of a gay child were so accepting and supportive.

Those who insist being gay is a choice seem to be able to ignore the obvious.

What is being ignored is the constant reminder to straight people we did not choose how God created us, any more than you chose.

You are right. My point is that there are traits are easily observable, before someone has to make that choice that the right thanks people make.

Adorable kid, great mother and a solid message. Good for Rosie and RuPaul.

i do feel bad for the extremely gay kids.. several of my closest grade school friends turned out to be homosexual.. and we still just beat each other up and played games on the playground, I never would have seen it coming back then. most gay people fit in but this kid obviously on the farther end of the spectrum and pushing toward gender identity disorder it seems... still he seems like a really nice kid

It's good that he's doing what interests him, but it seems he gave up one stereotype for another stereotype.

Truth is a messy thing.

He didn't "give up" anything. He's acting how he wants to act, which some people seem to believe fits a stereotype. That's more their issue than it is his.
12:52 AM on 01/05/2012
How so? Seems to me he has given up nothing. He is being allowed to pursue his interests by adults who encourage him. Every kid should be so lucky!

MEMO TO BEN: When you hear taunts from the loser chorus always keep this in mind:

You will probably make more money per year than any of those who tease you will make their entire lives. Stay proud and focused. You go kid!

Plays- you are so right. Ben-use your haters as motivators.
