As officers, family and friends prepare to say goodbye to Chicago Police Officer Clifton Lewis at his Thursday funeral, detectives are reportedly sorting through "enormous amounts of information" coming from community members, looking to help solve the West Side officer's murder.
Lewis, 41, was trying to stop a robbery at M&M Quick Foods on the West Side when he was shot on Dec. 29. An eight year CPD veteran who worked in the 15th District, Lewis was off-duty and working security at M&M when the incident occurred.
A public wake will be held for Lewis at United Baptist Church, 4242 W. Roosevelt Rd., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reports. His funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m., but the burial will be private. The Police Memorial Foundation is preparing to give Lewis's family a $50,000 check, and a $13,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his killer.
On Wednesday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined first-year officers in passing out fliers to Austin residents, hoping to help solve the crime, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Emanuel is also expected to speak at the Thursday funeral, along with Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy and Gov. Pat Quinn.
McCarthy said Wednesday that detectives have several leads in the investigation, the Chicago Tribune reports.
"We're getting a lot of cooperation from the community. We have enormous amounts of information coming in," McCarthy said, according to the Tribune. "The point is, we haven't caught the right bit of information."
There were reportedly several surveillance cameras that captured the slaying, but the two gunmen involved were wearing masks. The store had been robbed weeks before the murder, which is why Lewis was hired to work security.
He took the side job after proposing to his longtime girlfriend on Christmas Day -- to help pay for the wedding. His fiancée's son told Fox Chicago that his family has been devastated by the murder.
Lewis' family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to PAWS Chicago in the the name of Officer Clifton Lewis, NBC Chicago reports. The station will be streaming the services live here and .
