Gabino Zavala, Los Angeles Bishop, Resigns After Acknowledging His Two Children

Gabino Zavala Bishop Resign

ROBERT JABLON   01/ 5/12 04:53 AM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — As an auxiliary bishop in the nation's most populous Roman Catholic archdiocese, Gabino Zavala was an outspoken advocate for immigration rights, prison reforms and better conditions for the working poor.

Now parishioners and church officials in the region where the popular Zavala grew up struggled to come to grips with the announcement of his resignation and revelation that he fathered two children, a violation of canon laws of celibacy for priests.

Zavala, 60, who once urged Catholic media to report scandals such as clergy sex abuse "in a spirit of love and mercy," had his resignation accepted Wednesday by Pope Benedict XVI. Roman Catholic canon law permits bishops to step down earlier than the normal retirement age of 75 if they are sick or otherwise unfit for office.

"This is unexpected, sad and disorienting news for many people who know and like Bishop Zavala," said Tod Tamberg, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. "Remember, he was raised here. He has deep roots in Los Angeles and so he's very well-known here."

Tamberg said he knew nothing about Zavala's affair except that it involved consenting adults and that no church funds were used.

A message left at a Hacienda Heights telephone number for a Gabino Zavala was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Zavala was one of five auxiliary bishops in the archdiocese and was the primary pastoral and liturgical administrator for 66 churches in the San Gabriel region east of Los Angeles, Tamberg said. Archbishop Jose Gomez has selected someone to handle those duties until the Vatican can appoint a replacement.

Zavala informed the archbishop last month that he had fathered two children who live with their mother in another state, Gomez said in a letter to the archdiocese's approximately 5 million Catholics. The archbishop said Zavala told him that he had submitted his resignation to the pope.

"Since that time, he has not been in ministry and will be living privately," the archbishop said in the letter, which was posted on a Catholic blog.

Tamberg did not know the children's ages or gender but revealed that they are not twins – indicating Zavala and the woman had more than a passing relationship.

"The archdiocese has reached out to the mother and children to provide spiritual care as well as funding to assist the children with college costs. The family's identity is not known to the public, and I wish to respect their right to privacy," the archbishop wrote.

Roman Catholic priests are required to be celibate, though Eastern rite priests can be married and married Anglican priests who convert can become Catholic priests.

Zavala was born in Guerrero, Mexico, but grew up in Los Angeles. He was ordained in 1977 and was assigned to Our Lady of Guadalupe, a church in the heavily Mexican-American East Los Angeles area. He was appointed an auxiliary bishop in 1994.

A handful of other priests have quit their post over sexual relationships, including: Florida priest Alberto Cutie, who resigned in 2009 and married his then-girlfriend; Auxiliary Bishop James McCarthy of New York, who resigned in 2002 after the archdiocese was alerted about his affairs with women; and Archbishop Robert Sanchez of Santa Fe, N.M., who resigned in 1993 after confessing relationships with women.

The late Archbishop Eugene Marino of Atlanta resigned in 1990 when his relationship with a parishioner was made public; the woman said she and the archbishop had secretly married.

Perhaps it is time for the church to reexamine ALL of its values and currently held requirements for its clergy? I have yet to hear such a statement of intention. You'd think that this type of statement would be the first response to the sexual debacles of these past 2 decades.

A thorough and compassionate examination of how the precepts of the Church adversely affect its own practitioners, and the public it "serves" would serve the entire world well.
Until that fervent and pure examination happens, how can anyone trust the intentions of the church itself, or for that matter, any of the religious ideals it represents? Where is the talk being walked?

A whole religion has shot itself in the foot upon taking any step of this walk. The true service a church provides is comfort and assistance to the poor and dispirited, as well as upliftment of the confused, but how can there be any purity of focus when there are so many constraints and deviations impeding high intentions and outcomes? The Catholic Church itself is literally CONFUSED. It is having a sexual identity crisis and has been doing so for the past few centuries.

There is real possibility of tremendous healing should a COMPLETE apology be rendered, and a repealing of these archaic laws ensue after CONSCIOUS EXAMINATION. Humanity has a chance to be given a gift to which Catholicism could greatly contribute, just by standing in what is, and realizing it isn't working anymore. That's evolution.

So why is he resignin'? Oh, "a violation of canon laws of celibacy for priests." I guess the first violation didn't count. It couldn't have; he stuck around 'til he had the second violation. This is just so much Oom-galla-galla. I wanna know all the sordid details. How come he is just resignin' now. What happened that he now feels the need to resign; but didn't after the first child. Maybe he was tryin' to save up enough money for a Swiss chalet. Maybe one of his parishoners saw he and family out and about and threatened to blackmail him. Maybe, maybe, maybe. We could ask but that wouldn't be proper. He is after all a man of the church or somethin' like that. If I have offended anyone. Hey stuff happens. Just ask Brotha Bishop Zavala. Life.

I have met Bishop Zavala on a few occasions. He was the bishop at my son's confirmation. He always seemed way too normal to be a celibate priest. My heart goes out to him and he has my support, unlike the Catholic church, which does not have my support anymore. I wish him much happiness in his new life.

Auxiliary Bishop Zavala's transgression is unrelated to his obligation to remain celibate. The issue is with his obligation to continence. Revelation: The bishop remained celibate; he did not remain continent.

I wish the writers would do some homework.

Bottomline: he has validated his human nature. Next case.

Please explain : Celibate VS Continent

I had been on vacation; apologize for the delay of this response.

Celibate is unmarried; Continent is abstinence from sexual relations. These definitions are per canon law.

I know that the dictionary, for example, will differ with the meaning of celibate, for example. Again,I am giving you canonical meaning.

So the bishiop did not remain continent as is evidenced by the offspring. However, he did not marry the mother; therefore he is celibate.

I hope this helps.

The absurdity of it is that the Church allows married Anglican priests with children to convert and will even cover their education costs yet forbids Catholic priests to do the same.

Hey, at least he only committed the venial sin of fornication - he didn't commit the mortal sin of using contraception (whoops!)

Unexpected?

For whom?
04:06 PM on 01/05/2012
Catholics have a tendency to put priests on a near-deity pedestal. Celibacy for clergy puts an unnecessary burden on church leaders who are mere mortals and have the same needs as any other man. I see no practical reason for celibacy in the modern church.

It's not fair. He hears his own confession and gets absolution after saying 5 Hail Marys and 3 Lords prayers and I think impure thoughts and I'm going to hell. Just not fair.

A priest cannot hear his own confession, it doesn't work like that.

What religion do you recommend?

NONE! Or at least a combination of what you think best suites you hand picked from all the religions.

Organized religion is and has always been a problem.

So the 'bright side' of this story is the consensual and adult nature of it?
03:22 PM on 01/05/2012
At least he hasn't raped his children ... that we know of.

Of course, Bishop Vangheluwe of Belgium admitted that he had sex with his 5 year old nephew, and continued for 13 years. He also had sex with his other nephew. Bishops having sex with child relatives isn't new.

Father Maciel from Mexico, one of Pope John Paul 2's favorites, who was specifically endorsed by JP2, had sex with his own two sons, had more children, and had sex with countless other young boys.

Zavala is a good guy in the world of deviant Catholic priests. Now Parishioners have to pay to send his kids to college.
