Jean-Francois Fourtou's Photographs Depict A Topsy Turvy Wonderland (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 01/06/12 12:58 AM ET Updated: 01/06/12 01:42 PM ET

Jean-Francois Fourtou's real-life fairytale photographs look like they take place somewhere between an isolated cottage and the white rabbit's hole. The charming nature of these photos stems from the fact that they, like good desserts, are not overly sweet.

The photographs switch between depicting tiny people in a world made for giants and hulking figures in hilariously small rooms. The proportions are topsy-turvy but aside from that, the scenes look quite mundane, adding to their Amelie-esque magic touch; it's a world where everything has a place except for the humans who attempt to occupy the frame. In some house, somewhere, the pictures just might be based in reality.

Jan Svankmejer, the animator who made a stop-motion version of Alice In Wonderland, did this twenty years ago. This art project is very derivative of that.

The decapitated doll heads in the bathroom were pretty freaky, but, not so much as the guy in his tidy whiteys.

It looks more like Gulliver's travels than Alice in Wonderland to me!

The pictures of the people looking small in giant furniture makes me think of my favorite level in super mario... World 4, where Mario is tiny and surrounded by giant things everywhere... so incredibly cool :)

When I see these pictures it, makes me see what a creature like a mouse or ant might see us full size beings in their world. Did anyone ever wonder how we look towering over the little creatures? It was amazing photography and easy on the eyes. True impressionistic art.

" Did anyone ever wonder how we look towering over the little creatures?"

No, but I asked an elephant once if he ever stayed at a Holiday Inn Express..

The photos made me think of people trying to fit in where they don't belong. That made me feel sad.
Maybe some of should just look and feel before you comment.
