Jon Huntsman Grabs Major Newspaper Endorsement

Huntsman Globe

First Posted: 01/05/12 08:03 PM ET Updated: 01/06/12 08:22 AM ET

Jon Huntsman's presidential campaign received a major boost on Thursday evening when the former Utah governor received the endorsement of the Boston Globe, the most influential paper in New Hampshire.

Huntsman announced the endorsement during a campaign appearance on Thursday night and it stands to reason that it will be a common feature of his stump speech as the campaign leads up to Tuesday's vote. The actual substance of the endorsement may not make conservative hearts swoon -- focused, as it is, on Huntsman's cooperation with the Obama administration -- but in the Granite State, where independents can vote in the Republican primary, it's a big time coup.

When the national economy fell into recession, some Republican governors made a show of rejecting federal stimulus money on ideological grounds; sensibly, Huntsman took the money. While he endorsed the notion of a federal stimulus, he also offered a credible critique of the way the Democratic Congress had structured the plan. Then, when Obama offered him the post of ambassador to China, Huntsman accepted. Other Republicans, such as New Hampshire’s Judd Gregg, couldn’t bring themselves to accept entreaties from a Democratic president. Huntsman did. It attests to his sincerity when he vows to lead in a bipartisan spirit.

Perhaps equally important, however, is the explanation the editorial page gave for skipping over the governor it once covered: Mitt Romney.

Without personal experience to guide him, Romney is catering to the most vocal constituencies in the national-security wing of the GOP. As in other areas, such as his Robert Bork-led advisory panel on judicial policies, Romney’s ultimate intentions aren’t clear. Is this for real? Both his supporters and detractors suspect that behind the conservative scaffolding is a data-driven moderate who will make practical compromises. But the way Romney has run his campaign, it’s impossible to tell.

Nonetheless, there is a widespread belief that Romney’s campaign, like a well-designed corporate strategy, is bound for success. But even if Romney emerges as the nominee, it matters how he gets there. Already, the religious right, represented by Rick Santorum, and Tea Party activists, represented by Ron Paul, have pushed Romney in unwanted directions. In New Hampshire, Republican and independent voters have a chance, through Huntsman, to show him a sturdier model. Jon Huntsman would be a better president. But if he fails, he could still make Romney a better candidate.

Why would he have ny problem with Paul using adopted daughters as a toll to say he is about American standards etc? They certainly have no problem with making a big deal over diging into each others personal lives for any other reasons.I don't see anything at all with it

I think it is always uncalled for when candidates or their supporters do anything that attacks the children of said candidates.  It is uncalled for and just plain sleazy.  As sleazy as Scott Brown pimping his daughters on stage at the end of campaign speech.  Vote for us, we're all good looking and all my daughters are single.

Romney and Santorum are hated by their home states (MA, PA): Those are the people who know them best.
01:55 PM on 01/06/2012
I'm not sure the people of MA hate Romney. Trusting him is another story. But that doesn't distinguish him from anyone else in the pack. It was admittedly pretty hateful on his part when he resurrected a 1913 miscegenation law in an attempt to stop out of state gay couples from marrying in Massachusetts. His apparent disconnection with himself is a problem. Santorum, on the other hand...it's risky to articulate what he inspires.

I don't know about that. I didn't hate him before this election cycle began, but I sure do now. He's a lying flip-flopping coreless trickster. But I probably shouldn't hate him... I do have many friends from PA (all young) who hate Santorum.

Huntsman is Obama's pick to run against. He knows he can beat Huntsman. Why would a republican accept a post as ambassador from a Democart? Sorry folks, I just do not trust Huntsman.

You are dead wrong. Huntsman would be the hardest to beat, along with Willard. Obama's favorite would be Santorum or Gingrich. No right thinking American with their head screwed on straight would ever vote for either of these clowns.
03:09 PM on 01/06/2012
Actually, the opposite is true. Obama wanted Huntsman in his administration because he feared running against him for president in 2012 and he hoped having him in his administration would prevent that from happening. Huntsman is the most intelligent, most articulate and most presidential of all the current GOP candidates. He's not a religious fanatic and doesn't make ridiculous comments and doesn't state fallacies as being facts. He also sticks to his beliefs and doesn't pander to whomever he's speaking to on any given day. He could do very well with independents which could cause Obama to lose the election. I voted for Obama, and I still like him, but even I would consider voting for Huntsman.

He definitely dialed back his beliefs on climate change when he did a campaign speech at the American Enterprise Institute.  But I agree that he is the most moderate of all of the Republicans running.  He's also the only one with an economic plan and that actually believes we have to spur more investment and incentives for alternative energies and fuels.

So how long will it take before he jumps on the "black people need to get off welfare", or "gay marriage is wrong" bandwagons? Because that seems to be the in thing to do right now to increase popularity within the Republican party.

The prohibition of marijuana is so over whelmingly destructive to the fabric of democracy and liberties that this issue alone would make me vote for Huntsman..... Obama lied to us about using federal money to fight state rights to regulate marijuana...... Now he has thrown us under the bus....
For the life of me with over 50% of Americans favoring legalization, I can not understand his position. He no longer represents my political leanings...... He is a blue dog democrat and he should be challenged by another Democrat....
For Christ sakes, who is advising him on this issue.......There are literally millions and millions of people who have been irrevocably harm by prohibition and for what reason...... A lie of historical measure to out law hemp from competing with other commodities on the market. Dupont, Anslinger and Hearst are surely in hell for doing this to the world. Prohibition is an American Export.

Good for Huntsman. One of the few who makes sense, and seems like a genuine candidate. I also like that fact that he's got so much experience with foreign policy.

Only if he finishes in single digit percentiles. If he shows better than that, he might gain some traction for future primaries. Either way, it looks like 2012 is probably not his year, but at least he's getting his name out there so that people will know who he is in 2016 and beyond.

I like Huntsman, I'm afraid he is too far left for most conservatives, though. If he doesn't make it this year then he should run as Independant or even Democrat in 2016.

Huntsman should quit after New Hampshire and start his campaign for 2016. I could see myself, a moderate independent voting for Huntsman, but not this year. President Obama WILL be re-elected in November because he has done a very good job. Huntsman could have the nomination in 2016 along with possibly the White House.

the very fact that you think Obama has done a good job negates your claim to being a moderate independent.

The Boston Globe needs to catch up the news! The following sentence from their endorsement is 100% false!

"He has stood up far more forcefully than Romney against those in his party who reject evolution and the science behind global warming."

The Hill reported

Huntsman shifts stance on climate change
By Daniel Strauss - 12/06/11 01:55 PM ET

GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman shifted his position on global warming Tuesday, telling a conservative audience that there is "not enough information right now" on the issue to formulate policies.
01:37 PM on 01/06/2012
This is why, although he appears to be comparatively reasonable, a closer look proves otherwise. As Bill Maher advised: Check out his website.
05:17 AM on 01/07/2012
Your claim against the Globe's statement is flawed. If you look at his full statement:

"I'm not a scientist, I'm not a physicist, but I would defer to science in that discussion, and I would say that the scientific community owes us more in terms of a better description or explanation about what might lie beneath all of this...But there's not enough information right now..."

He does trust the science behind climate change but he wishes that they would have a better explanation for it. He wants a better description from the scientific community because just like he says later on, there is still controversy and conflict among the community regarding climate change.

In a later statement, Huntsman says, "There are questions about the validity of the science, evidence by one university over in Scotland recently, I think the onus is on the scientific community to provide more in the way of information, to help clarify the situation, that's all...If there's some interruption or disconnect in terms of what other scientists have to say, then let the debate play out within the scientific community.."

It is clear that he trusts the science, but if there is still debate among the scientific community, how can he stand up for it among his party when he is still unsure of what the consensus is. When the debate subsides, I am sure Huntsman will stand behind whatever they agree on, if they ever do.

I'm not a Republican but this guy Huntsman is the best candidate . The rest of of the far radical right that is running. are to extreme. Because of the Recon's hatred for Obama and it's real hate they are over looking this guy. They want someone they think will humiliate and reduce Obama to nothing more than a pile of monkey dung. Huntsman on the other hand is the most qualified candidate ,but doesn't have the steaming hatred for humiliating Obama . Sometime hatred wins over common sense. In this case especially .

The "Citizens Uninted" desision from the right wong stacked Roberts court gave American politics and america's future to the banksters and Wall street 1%ers. The coo started in 2000 with the appointment by the SCOTUS is now complete!
Revolution anyone? Because that is the only way anything is going to change.

Finally a common-sense Republican who does not believe that all Democrats are the spawn of Satan. His willingness to recognize a good idea regardless of its source makes him a noteworthy candidate.

He has many other excellent qualities too. As a frequent Democrat voter this fine man may very well be my choice come November.

I do like Huntsman, but sorry there is something wrong with him I cannot pin it down, I mean besides his choice of political parties which I will never understand from a man who seems sooo smart.

It is so typical of the moronic media to make a big deal out of this when it is meaningless or even a negative for the Huntsman campaign which is going nowhere fast. The fact that a liberal newspaper endorses a republican candidate is hardly a positive thing in a republican primary.
