Jon Huntsman Denounces Nasty, Jingoistic Video Allegedly Made By Ron Paul Supporters (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/06/2012 10:44 am Updated: 01/06/2012 1:01 pm

CONCORD, N.H. -- A relatively timid Republican primary -- as personal attack ads go -- took a turn for the vile on Thursday evening when a group of Ron Paul supporters released a video depicting Jon Huntsman as a Chairman Mao-style Manchurian Candidate.

The relationship between the group, "New Hampshire Liberty 4 Paul," which created the video, and the Paul campaign was not entirely clear, nor was the legitimacy of the group itself (as web videos go, this falls below the usual standards of Paul fans). The group has no other discernable online presence, the YouTube account was created on Jan. 4, and has posted only the single video -- all of which points to some ad hoc effort and not an actual campaign product.

When The Huffington Post contacted the poster of the video through YouTube to ask why they created the video and whether they had any formal association with the Paul campaign, NHLiberty4Paul replied: "Sorry, campaign has asked me not to speak to reporters."

The Paul campaign disavowed the ad Friday. "The video is disgusting. Whoever put it up should remove it immediately," Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said to CNN.

WATCH The Video Here (story continues below):

It certainly doesn't help the Texas Republican, whose image as a candidate of conviction has been tripped up primarily by allegations that those convictions include racial insensitivity. And by Friday morning, the video was already causing some waves on the trail.

Speaking before the College Convention, Huntsman was asked about the spot, which features him in Chairman Mao garb, and questions whether the former U.S. Ambassador to China values "American values, or Chinese" and implies that he would be weak on China.

"I saw just parts of it yesterday," he said. "First of all, it is just stupid. Second of all, yeah, I lived overseas four times ... I speak Chinese, of course I do. If someone wants to poke fun of me for speaking Chinese, that's okay. The thing I object to is bringing forward pictures and videos of my adopted daughters and suggesting that there is some sinister motive there. I have a daughter from China who was abandoned at two months of age and left in a vegetable market, picked up by the police and sent to an orphanage."

"I have a second daughter who was born in India in a very rural village ... and left for dead the day she was born," he added. "And luckily she was picked up before the animals got her, and she was sent to an orphanage for her safety, was raised and now she is in my family. So I have two little girls who are a daily reminder that there are a lot of kids in this world who don't have the breaks that you do and face a very uncertain future ... and now these two girls are on the presidential campaign trail. I say, how cool is that?"

This story has been updated to include the Paul campaign's reaction to the ad.

I found these at The Raw Story. I should have been able to find them here, as well.

Huntsman's fellow republicans find a way to smear him twice; first with the youtube video, then accusing him of being behind the video. Critical thinking skills, people. The thing called bias confirmation is what you want to avoid.

Or by corporations that want to divide the independent voters in NH to show Ron Paul as weak candidate.

Still Ron Paul will be second and very close to top. If It was not for Huntsman, Paul has a better chance to win NH.

I am outraged of whoever puts up this video in the name of Ron Paul supporters. Whoever you are, if you have courage to put up this video, have the courage to step forward and take responsibility for it. Don't use the campaign or the name of Ron Paul supporter to make other Ron Paul supporters look bad. This video is totally our of character with what Ron Paul and his supporters stand for and believe in.

Wouldn't it be great if someone made a silly, barely attacking ad against Romney, then claimed to be a Paul supporter? After this incident with Huntsman, everyone would think the Romney campaign was responsible.

If this is the product of Ron Paul's campaign, then it's clear he will never be President. It's just another example of putting others down to prop yourself up, a tactic that has failed over, and over and over again in American politics. The sad part of this waste of time is that Paul really does have different ideas - for better or for worse - than the rest of the GOP pack. But whatever possessed them to go after Jon Huntsman - who most people haven't even heard of - demonstrates a flaw in the Paul campaign mechanism. Once I had thought of voting for him, not anymore.

Thanks for the correction, sixtoes, but why would the Huntsman campaign be "denouncing" it, if they're the ones who released it? That appears to be a contradiction.

Huntsman is the only sane GOP candidate running for office. Whoever made this ad only makes Huntsman more attractive. I didn't know he had adopted two abandoned children, both beautiful. Thanks to this ad, now I do, and it ups my respect for him. Good God, GOP. this man could beat Obama, but your party is too steeped in hate to nominate him. John, leave the dark side and step into the light.
03:07 AM on 01/09/2012
It looks like his daughters made the video.
07:28 PM on 01/08/2012
Jon Huntman's daughters made the bad video that was attributed to a Ron Paul supporter. First of all, how did some random person get such intimate footage of the huntsman family, unless the random person IS in Huntsman's family? Second of all, Abby, the same daughter who was looking guilty on Fox News, mistakenly admitted it on the huntsman site forum (thinking it was a private thread when it was actually public lol.) http://imgur.com/a/Jw679 and also http://orinje.com/threads/430416-The-paulbots-are-going-crazy-with-our-video. Thirdly, an independent web company investigated, came to the conclusion that the video was posted from Huntsman's campaign servers, and then explained why pretty clearly. http://images.politico.com/global/2012/01/cando_com_analysis.html I actually can't believe it. This is so slimy and underhanded. Well folks, this is the kind of person who is the status quo politician.

Right: all of the nasty, prejudiced stuff associated with Ron Paul was obviously done by someone else without his knowledge to discredit him.

This is Newsletter Issue #2.

Next, we can cue Ron to say, "Give me money, you don't want this Chinese speaker to win do you?" followed by a later statement that reads "I have never seen the video you are speaking about and did not authorize it."

WTF, evidence of this day-old youtube channel being "Associated with Ron Paul"?

On the contrary, John Biddleston has plenty of evidence linking it to the John Huntsman campaign, something which should be breaking news.

Here's why I am happy: after I read "Animal Farm" with my seventh graders we then do a unit on propaganda. Every year I look for current examples; I really couldn't have asked for anything better as a teaching tool.

This commercial is a result of two things:Citizens United, secondly this is what happens when the Nativists and John Bircher's are running your politicial party.I found this ad to be ugly almost beyond description. If they are doing this to each other I can not imagine what the country will have to endure in the general campaign against Obama. If some how we can get the money of elections and politics all together we might have a chance to re-focus on actual issues and problems.I am probably overly optimistic about issues but a publicly funded campaign might turn down the volume a bit.
10:40 PM on 01/08/2012
This isn't a "commercial". It was a youtube video which has been proven to be posted by John Huntsman supporters. You should have saved yourself some time by actually reading the article.
11:17 PM on 01/08/2012
I did read the article,I guess its semantics isn't it?I assume if you are running videos on youtube supporting your favorite politician wouldn't that be called an ad or commercial? Its unfortunate that you find the one thing (linguistic differences/interpretations)and throw an off handed comment about me not reading the article.I am no Huntsman fan (or any GOP these days, where are the Eisenhower Republicans?) but I did like his comment to Romney about the divisiveness that is our discourse these days.

I love it when the Paulsters argue that progressives should be supporting him. While ending the wars is a commendable goal, the downside of a Paul Presidency would be too awful to imagine.... (unless you're a wealthy_white_male landowner, of course)
