Insurer Profits Are Up In The Wake Of Health Care Law They Opposed

Health Care

Since insurance companies undertook extensive lobbying efforts against health care reform -- spending millions in an attempt to derail the legislation while it was still going through Congress, and allegedly instructing their own employees to launch letter-writing campaigns in protest -- they've actually been doing quite well since it passed.

Profits are up at some of the nation's largest insurers, including Aetna, WellPoint and UnitedHealth Group, according to an analysis by Bloomberg Government. That's the opposite of what the insurers themselves predicted would happen, and comes about mainly a result of the companies taking on more business through Medicare and Medicaid.

The fight over health care reform, which ended when President Obama signed the legislation into law in March 2010, was one of the most prolonged and contentious political battles in recent memory. Conservatives mounted a fierce opposition to the reform effort, aided by a $380 million lobbying campaign on behalf of the health care industry. Insurers claimed that the new system would lead to skyrocketing coverage costs for all Americans, while politicians favoring reform countered that the insurance companies were merely worried about their own bottom lines.

If that was indeed the case, it seems insurers can breathe a bit easier now. The Bloomberg report surveys the recent earnings of five of the country's largest insurers -- WellPoint, UnitedHealth Group, Aetna, Humana and Cigna -- and finds that their profit margins have climbed to an average of 8.24 percent in the year and a half since the health care reform package was signed into law.

By contrast, in the 18-month period before health care was passed, profit margins at these five insurers averaged just 6.88 percent.

Revenue from government business -- namely, Medicare and Medicaid -- has soared for these insurers since the reforms were signed into law, according to the Bloomberg report. Meanwhile, revenue from ordinary commercial business has grown only slightly, as more and more Americans, looking for ways to trim basic expenses, are choosing not to seek medical care if they can cope without it.

The report's findings may not tell the whole story, as the health care law may yet become more or less fully realized. A number of provisions in the law are scheduled to take effect in future months and years, while conservative politicians, including Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney, have threatened to roll back the reforms entirely.

So basically this "report",is saying the MIX has changed - temporarily. Recently Steve Wynn of Vegas, said his premiums for employees have gone up double digits and much faster than before Obamacare was passed. He has been advised those rates will become even larger going forward. Steve is a democrat that has supported Reid for many years. BTW, he also has admitted lending unions 2 million this year to help  Read More...

I'm sure the crime syndicate known as health insurance( whatta oxymoron)is getting rich. This year I have to choose between healthcare or health insurance. W/ insurance 45$ to see a doctor. I will now be putting what woulda been for my healthcare crime insurance premiums into an account for bankruptcy in case I need healthcare. My experience is health insurance mostly does NOT help with affordable care or avoiding a financial disaster. It is simply taxation w/o representation. On the other hand a lawyer will almost always be helpful., Maybe when we get to 2 paying patients for every 10 doctors, someone will wake the "f" up

Follow the money and you will find out how much United Heath gave to the campaigns of our elected officials and non-elected. It's such a shame, because alot of that money would insure a lot of Americans.

What will happen when the insurers put the Doctor's out of business? These insurance companies have had doctor's hands tied a long time. It's not even about the patient's health anymore, it's about the payment. If you have money you live and if you don't well so sad.

My daughter is 21, she works for a co that provides insurance at a high premium, we asked my insurance co if we can add her to mine as it is a fraction of the cost, they said no, as long as her work provides it she can;t be on mine. My daughter is forced to take the more expensive plan. Obama Care does nothing for me or my family, but just the opposite.

Capitalism at its best, there might be some interstate commerce clause getting in the way of free market care. Obama care will take one dollar out of everybody's check just to pay for research for healthcare? Where is this money being wasted, somebody is getting rich. I'm still sick.

There is nothing unjust about your situation. If people could choose to be in one plan over another according to what suited them (cheaper plan, better benefits, etc) then companies would be in a muck. The premium difference between your two companies is representative of the benefit levels, group utilization, and percentage of corporate contribution. It is safe to assume your daughter's company has some combination or lesser employer premium contributions, better benefits and or greater utilization (a company that gets hit with a cancer patient, a premature baby, a sick child, chronic health conditions, and any number or all of the above will consequently be hit with higher premiums). I am not sure how you happen to know it is health care reform that has caused this situation for your family??? On the other hand, you should be grateful that both you and your daughter have jobs, and have jobs that include benefits which you are able to afford. Your daughter is a working adult, there is no reason why she should be able to be covered under her mommy's health plan.

"When Congress required most Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty, Democrats denied that they were creating a new tax. But in court, the Obama administration and its allies now defend the requirement as an exercise of the government’s “power to lay and collect taxes.” http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/18/health/policy/18health.html

The funny thing is, conservatives will disregard these facts in favor of their own world view, which says that HCR is a failure in every respect. Never mind that it extends coverage to millions, helps businesses by reducing their burden to provide employee health benefits, and clearly benefits the insurance industry.

It's true that many of the provisions have not taken affect yet, and it's true that they may end up hurting the insurance industry. But that's still to be seen, and I would argue that any blatantly harmful legislation would be stricken quickly. The health law itself is good, does what it was intended to do, and has yet to fulfill any of the dire predictions that were made about it by the conservatives who continue to fight it tooth and nail.

Is not health care reform. It's insurance company bailout. Everyone is being forced to BUY insurance or pay penalties ranging from $750 to at least $2000 collected by the IRS. The HCR bill adds 19,000 new IRS agents. Don't buy insurance ? Say good bye to your tax refund. The IRS can levy your bank account, put a lien on your house or take you to jail for not paying the taxes.

You do remember that the individual mandate didn't make it into the final bill, right? The entire premise of your comment is flawed.

I get your point that, if there were an individual mandate, that could be bad, especially for those who don't have a job that offers benefits (if you remember, job-based benefits excused individuals from buying their own insurance). That's one of the reasons it was shot down. But don't you think that the foundational concept is a good one? That everyone should have insurance, regardless of their ability to pay? After all, that's a tenet of health care services in this country, to serve the people despite their ability to pay.
