Jeff Harris Self-Portraits: Photographer Takes An Image A Day For 13 Years And Counting (VIDEO)

In 1999, Toronto-based photographer Jeff Harris began taking a photo of himself each day as an alternative to all those diaries he started but couldn't keep up. But what began as a self-portrait project has evolved considerably in its 13 years.

Harris' photographs aren't the typical, self-portrait vanity projects that crop up on YouTube now and again. Instead, he used the project to inspire him in his daily life, to go out and do something that would get him off his couch.

"I was very much a 9-to-5 person and the project itself was a challenge for me to get outside and not make it look like I had a cubicle job, but that I actually was running around and doing a different interesting thing each day," Harris said.

You see him in forests, jumping into lakes of frozen water and lunging off speakers at rock concerts (and at the hospital the next day after he fractured his foot). Many of the photos aren't taken by himself, but by everyone from his grandma to celebrities he's met, including Gene Simmons and Michael Moore.

This story becomes even more incredible as it progresses, but it's difficult to explain without cheapening it. So we'd rather you watch now.

No, it is not great art. And yes, despite his cancer, he is still a picture a day guy. And, yes, lots of people get cancer and it's uncool for everyone. And, no, this is not intended as some sort of insult against this poor guy. It's fine what he does. It's just not great.

Oh gee, thanks for setting the record straight.

I get your sarcasm, Clare53. It is my opinion and as far as I know I am still entitled to it.

My evaluation of the work in this piece emanates from my many years as a photo editor. I know what a great photograph is, and most of these don't measure up. So what! If you enjoy looking at them, that's fine.

I do think that in recent history the mediocre in all the arts gets way too much praise, perhaps because it's being created and viewed by generations of people who were told that every scribble they made was Wonderful with a W. Now society's infected with a self-esteem that is really egotism, and it is accompanied by a lack of taste and discrimination. This has crowded the field with the so-so and left great art stuck with a viewing public that doesn't know it's Beethoven from its Butt. Those kind of lost souls become "joiners" who like what everyone else tells them to Like with a capital Facebook L.

My observation. No need for sarcasm.

Jeff Harris's  photographical journey is remarkably touching and gratifying to behold. When you decide to position yourself inside your own images. pivoting yourself against gradual shifts of time, a story has to unfold. This piece made me feel like I was free falling with Jeff, watching him become an "object" of desire: quirky and jubilant, ordinary and extraordinary, lights on and lights off, clumsy and graceful, struggling and powerful.

I played this video twice: last thing before I went to bed, again this morning as I sipped my coffee. I am in awe of  the concept and the way Harris is the curator of his own history. Without revealing more to anyone who has not viewed these visceral compositions, I will just add that I believe Harris has given himself and the viewer, a visual poem, full of its own metaphors providing an intimate passage into his own humanity, and perhaps ours, too.

This is beautiful. It's a shame that there are so few comments on such a moving story, but so many comments on other stories where people just want to bicker.

We could all learn something from Mr. Harris. Life consists of the moments, and the moments are precious.
