Latin America Battling Wildfires, Floods, Droughts

Latin America Wild Weather

By CESAR GARCIA and IAN JAMES   01/ 6/12 04:06 PM ET   AP

CHIA, Colombia -- From Chile to Colombia to Mexico, Latin America has been battered recently by wildfires, floods and droughts.

For many witnessing the extreme weather in the region and around the world, the question that comes up again and again is whether climate change is playing a role. The response from experts: Probably.

While leading climate scientists are unable to pin any single flood or heat wave solely on climate change, experts say the number of extreme weather events is increasing worldwide and the evidence suggests global warming is having an impact.

Wildfires are raging in Chile during an atypical heat wave, and northern Mexico is suffering from its worst drought in 70 years of record-keeping. A second straight season of heavy rains in Colombia killed at least 182 people, destroyed more than 1,200 homes and caused an estimated $2 billion in damage in the past four months.

Researchers predict more wild, unusual weather in the coming years, and they say Latin America is especially vulnerable because deforestation and sprawling construction have made the region more susceptible to flooding and landslides.

At a rose farm in the Colombian town of Chia, workers say floodwaters covered fields of roses last month for the second time in less than a year, leaving damaged greenhouses and a wasteland of shriveled flowers.

"Never in the history of this farm – and it's a business with 30 years in the market – have we ever had any such problem," said Javier Castellanos, the farm's manager, who estimates the damage at more than $6 million after floods in April and December.

He suspects climate change has been intensifying the rainstorms.

While experts say the cyclical cooling of the Pacific Ocean known as La Nina is a big factor in the weather, some also say climate change is likely making some of the severe weather more pronounced than it otherwise would be.

"We're seeing an increase in extremes of high temperatures, an increase in extremes of heavy precipitation, an increase in the length and severity of droughts," said Chris Field, director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology at Stanford University.

"It is not yet scientifically possible to say with confidence that any single event is a consequence of human-caused climate change, but we have confidence in both the general trend and in the fingerprint of human activity," Field said.

Unusual weather has been plentiful in the past year, from floods in Thailand to drought in Texas.

In Latin America, a severe drought is hitting Argentina, harming key export crops such as soybeans and corn and leaving cattle with little to feed on. Unusually dry weather and high temperatures have made forest fires much harder to control in usually wet areas of southern Chile.

In Bolivia, seasonal rains that used to come in September instead arrived in mid-December after a record heat wave. Puerto Rico had its second wettest year in more than a century of record-keeping.

Some experts stress that the dominant factor in much of the weather is currently La Nina. Like El Nino, which in contrast involves warmer Pacific waters, it's associated with weather changes throughout Latin America and elsewhere.

"It would be very risky scientifically speaking to attribute this historic record (drought) in the case of Mexico to climate change," said Rodney Martinez, scientific coordinator of the International Research Center on El Nino in Ecuador. "In the case of Colombia ... what's happened corresponds perfectly with a natural event like La Nina."

One of the questions now being researched by scientists is how climate changes may affect the El Nino/La Nina cycle.

Jeff Masters, director of meteorology for the website Weather Underground, said it's unlikely so many extremes would naturally occur in such a short period. He cited two major droughts in the Amazon in 2005 and 2010, and Colombia's 2010 rains, which were the heaviest in at least 42 years.

"I think you really have to point the finger at human-caused climate change as having tipped the scales to make previously unprecedented weather events more possible, and multiple unprecedented weather events like we're seeing," Masters said. "There is so much regular variation in the weather, and it's hard to pick out the signal from the noise. But the signal's sure getting pretty strong now."

Field likened the influence of global warming to talking on a cell phone while driving. "There are always traffic accidents, but if you throw people talking on cell phones in the mix, you increase the probability," Field said. "The role of climate change and weather-related extremes is similar."

Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University, said a warming climate has become "part of the fabric – the background state – in which all weather happens."

"The overall character of weather events, with each passing year, is being more and more influenced by human-caused climate change," Mann said.

In Colombia, the latest floods between September and December set off mudslides and forced hundreds of thousands of people to temporarily evacuate their homes.

At the rose farm in Chia, north of Bogota, flowers in dozens of greenhouses were destroyed by the overflowing Bogota River, and workers had to use pumps to drain the land afterward. The farm's workers say they've never seen anything like it.

Experts note that Colombia has suffered floods during previous La Ninas and that regardless of the causes behind the weather, better planning for intense storms is vital.

"We must invest in reducing our vulnerability," said Omar-Dario Cardona, a civil engineer and professor of disaster risk management at the National University of Colombia.

He said that means not rebuilding in areas that have suffered flood damage and reducing exposure by relocating at-risk homes, crops and infrastructure.

The clearing of forests and destruction of wetlands in Colombia also have worsened floods because less rainwater is captured and it instead runs directly into rivers, said Manuel Rodriguez Becerra, a former Colombian environment minister and a professor at the University of the Andes in Bogota.

If the number of floods and droughts keep increasing as researchers predict, Rodriguez said, "there are areas that are really going to suffer a lot."

Drought and fires are a problems in the US also, and we are busy draining the Ogallala aquifer:
"..It supports nearly one-fifth of the wheat, corn, cotton, and cattle produced in the United States..."

Since it has not warmed in this century the alarmists switched to blaming all weather events on CO2.

How is it working ? Not very well! How the mighty have fallen !

Copenhagen was the high water mark of climate alarmism and it has been all down hill since then.

At the time of Copenhagen cap and trade or CO2 taxes were just possible, now the chance is essentially ZERO !

The public just doesn't believe the lie that every extreme weather event is caused by CO2.

Neptune: "Since it has not warmed in this century"

This is entirely false. Anyone with a little common sense knows better.

Neptune: "every extreme weather event is caused by CO2."

You've just created a strawman there neptune, haven't you? Create a false narrative and then rail on against it. It is a common tactic used by Fox and a.m. radio where they do not allow an opposing voice to correct them.

It is a form of lying, neptune.

Apparently the CRUTEM3 data has better sense than you do.

It shows no warming this century.

BTW: We have been told that global warming causes cold snowy winters. So far this winter has been warm and not snowy. Does this mean that we aren't experiencing global warming just like the temperature records show ?

The alarmists will spin it that WHATEVER happens is caused by global warming including global cooling and earthquakes. They have no shame.

The public is largely ignorant to what we face because of human induced C02- that they are misinformed- or unaware not not make the C02 human connection 'go away'

The increasing weather anomalies- will continue, become worse- and cause suffering all over- mostly poor countries will suffer the most- but in time the USA will as well- especially those geographic regions most vulnerable to climate change - and those regions will be hit with droughts and ever increasing heat waves in the summer.

The arctic meltdown, the extreme weather events, can be linked to C02- you simply have more warmth in the atmosphere then 30 years ago- which causes more water vapor.

Dry areas will get drier and hotter, and wet areas wetter- just as the climate models have long predicted.

August 3, 2011 "Dallas, which by Tuesday afternoon set a record at 110 and expected to hit record-breaking temperatures the rest of the week, has endured 32 consecutive days of 100-degree days and could break the record set in 1980 of 42 days. Tuesday's previous record of 107 degrees was set in 1998."

Sept 14, 2011 "Wichita Falls has become the first Texas city to have 100 days of triple-digit temperatures in one year, the same day the Dallas-Fort Worth area joined the state's long list of cities with a record number of 100-degree days in 2011."

Why are we still fighting with people who deny the most obvious of data, the most obvious of information, the most obvious of knowledge? Because the fossil fuel corporations have clouded the issue to make more money. Corporations are meant to make money. They are NOT meant to ensure the survival of a nation, a people, or our species. Their only reason for their existance is to make money, quarter to quarter.

So if the scientifically valid concept of global warming threatens fossil fuel corporations' profits, it must be attacked by the fossil fuel corporations.

We have to start weakening corporations and their often mindless and unwitting supporters or they will bring the whole enterprise of humanity down. Fossil Fuel Corporations are not people. They are soul-less collectives, like a hive of insects.

Did Texas have their hottest temp on record last year, and are they currently in a record breaking drought?

One retaliatory meme I see from time to time from people who won't face this issue is that people concerned about global warming are hyping the seriousness of the problem. The deniars then build a scenario based on their assumptions about what they think that the global warmers are saying or thinking.

Let me save you the trouble of guessing. Here is what I think. I do not expect to be able to forsee all or even most of the major changes that will result from a slight shift in temperature, but I am about 100% certain that they will not all be benign. Where I live, the leaves stayed on the trees due to an extremely warm fall, and when the first winter storm hit, the leaves were still on the trees, something unusual in my experience. Trees snapped like twigs from the weight of the tons of snow that the leaves retained, downing power lines and knocking out power for over a week in some areas.

What else is going to go wrong as the climate changes? Who knows. If you think a warmer climate will be all sunshine and roses, I think that you are the one betting on an unlikely scenario.

Did Texas have their hottest temp on record last year, and are they currently in a record breaking drought ?

Answer NO !

I live in Texas and it was much hotter around 1978 or so. I remember maximum temperatures of 110 ° F for weeks on end. That hasn't happened recently.

As far as drought goes there is usually a drought when there is a La Nina and this one is about average.

As far as the alarmists grasping at straws it just makes them look ignorant.

Who to believe. You or the National weather service who put 2011 as the 2nd hottest on record for Texas. It was also the driest on record.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=2011-was-the-driest-year

Personally I choose to believe the National weather service, as they actually measure the temperature, and record it.

BTW: what makes you think that the maximum daily temperatures in the exact location you live in can be used to determine the entire state of Texas' temperatures, or the global temperature?

Basically, every thing you have said is false.

neptune: "As far as the alarmists grasping at straws it just makes them look ignorant."

Well neptune, someone looks ignorant here.

Lets ask our nations premier climatologist about it.
Hansen, J., M. Sato, R. Ruedy, Climate Variability and Climate Change: The New
Climate Dice , November 10 2011.
"We conclude that extreme heat waves, such as that in Texas and Oklahoma in 2011 and Moscow in 2010, were caused by global warming, because their likelihood was negligible prior to the recent rapid global warming. We discuss practical implications of this substantial, growing climate change."
http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/mailings/2012/20120105_PerceptionsAndDice.pdf

And lets ask the Texas State climatologist:

Note to neptune, be sure to find 2011 on the various graphs in the climateabyss article.

Did Texas have their hottest temp on record last year, and are they currently in a record breaking drought?

No not even close.

I live in Texas and the last few summers have been about average.

Around 1978 there were summers with 2 and 3 weeks of 110 ° F days. That hasn't happened recently.

Yes it is dry but hardly a record. I didn't need to water my lawn after July this year which is unusual Whenever there is a La Nina it always produces a drought in Texas.

Those who are ignorant of the facts just look silly !

The climate models said this was going to happen and this is just the beginning of a major chain of events that will change this planet for a century or more, But be calm and asurred that it is all not going to happen because the US conservative movement says it is all bad science. The irony is that although the US will feel the effects it will not feel them as strongly as will many other countries but the madness that it creates will impact the US in many ways.

Before we hear any more fossil fuel propaganda about why this can't be global warming, could we please hear from the anti global warming people themselves? Can they please tell us what it is that makes them think they are smarter than scientists at NASA, NOAA, AAAS, NAS, and AGU who say that global warming is real, and is happening, and is largely caused by the 2 million pounds of carbon dioxide we humans add to the atmosphere every second of every day?

You don't need no book learning, and fancy science to know what's going on. It's just another green scam. I've always thought those pointy heads with their "holier than thou" attitudes, and their so called "knowledge and expertise" were just all trying to pretend they were better than ordinary people.

It's communists, and democrats, and those hippies from the 1960s in their latest watermelon incarnation, worshiping Al Gore as their god, and trying to bamboozle us all with their "facts". I don't need no stinkin' facts to know what's going on. AGW is anti-god, and a plot to get money off us hard working Americans, money that could be better spent by redistributing it to the super rich.

Sorry - got a bit carried away.

Since the winter is mild so far does that mean that global warming isn't happening ?

Will we now be brainwashed into believing global warming causes warm winters ?

Global climate change is not such a simple process as you seem to believe. It causes disruptions in earth's climate cycles in many different ways, including warming in some areas and cooling in others, at different times and seasons. Sounds like you're getting your ideas from Rush or Glenn.
09:33 AM on 01/07/2012
Actually I am getting my predictions from the alarmist scientists themselves.

They have predicted both colder and warmer winters because of global warming.

What they really mean is that WHATEVER HAPPENS is because of global warming.

Facts are so inconvenient for the alarmists. The cold winter is embarrassing to the alarmists so now they say they have always said that Global WARMING should cause cold winters.

.
Someone should have told these people..
David Parker, at the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research in Berkshire, says ultimately, British children could have only virtual experience of snow. Via the internet, they might wonder at polar scenes – or eventually “feel” virtual cold..
David Viner

However, the warming is so far manifesting itself more in winters which are less cold than in much hotter summers. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event". "Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said. .
http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/snowfalls-are-now-just-a-thing-of-the-past-724017.html

THE MORE YOU KNOW ABOUT SCIENCE THE MORE IMMUNE YOU ARE TO CLIMATE ALARMISM.
09:38 AM on 01/07/2012
You apparently get your ideas from Al Gore !

The climate disruption BS was invented because people noticed that it hasn't warmed this century.

Whatever happens is attributed to global warming and climate disruption is so vague it means whatever you want it to mean. Like Alice in wonderland.
