Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2012 Ads Are Kind Of Scaring Us (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/07/2012 8:27 am Updated: 01/07/2012 8:30 am

You usually expect spring/summer clothing lines to be advertised with models sunning themselves on a beach or with flowers.

But Jil Sander is apparently saying, "Eff that," because the fashion house's new 2012 ads seem to be shot inside a creepy haunted house.

Photographed by Willy Vanderperre, the shoot puts models Natasha Poly, Daria Strokous, Clement Chabernaud and Aiden Andrews in adorable clothes under very moody lighting and dramatic shadows.

The Halloween-esque vibe benefitted from the art direction of Raf Simons, who's rumored to be under consideration to helm the creative house at Dior.

But back to the ads. Those creepy stairs! There's gotta be an axe murderer behind her on those stairs, right? Why is the glass broken in that window? That birdcage veil looks freaky! We want our moms.

Check out the Jil Sander ads below (if you dare).

This assessment of Jil Sander's ad campaign is disappointingly puerile. Huffington Post needs better fashion blogging!

Looks like a film noir visual reference and I, as many are saying here, think it's fantastic looking. Real style, great fit/cut/design and love that poison green! Classic and knock down glamrous. We need more of this. Down with the tarty/tattered look!

Calling this line 'adorable' seems like a far stretch. lol.. If you remove your ridiculous Halloween reference, they style is more old school Hollywood, very elegant and classic.

oh, c'mon.. clean visual reference to the Hollywood thriller chiller movies of days past.. am reminded of Gloria Swanson descending the steps for her shot, Mr. DeMille..

clever, eye-grabbing and different. Were I Jill Sander, would be snatching that creative person for more outtta the box stuff in the future...

or we can go back to Ralph Lauren with country club settings.....

Vonric, I'll take Ralph Lauren. I liked JS until a few years ago when she started changing her style to the extreme for me anyway.

No fashion like current fashion which means it has ceased to be fashionable the nanosecond it is current.

How old is the writer of this piece? There's nothing remotely "axe murderer" or "Halloween" about these shots O_O I'd say the shots are Old Hollywood as previous commenters mentioned, like classic Alfred Hitchcock, as in "Psycho, Dial 'M' for Murder, Vertigo and Rear Window" I think it's brilliant as a fashion spread. It's a huge contrast from the cookie cutter fashion themes that we see every season. Props to Jil Sander's concept person.

Stunning, very retro designs - both the clothing and the ad campaign!

You and your cohort Ellie should really stick to writing about the Kardashians as that is about the level of your fashion intelligence

The interns are writing the headlines again.
It should be something referring to the very 1940's silhouettes and film noir style lighting. Very Lauren Becall, Mysterious, but hardly scary.

Yes, they must be! That's what happens when a generation has no knowledge of what came before it. I love the noir quality of the photos, and the clothes are gorgeous. Very old Hollywood.

Will someone help me find out how one of the commenters below ordered one of these dresses? I'd be fascinated to know. These fashions haven't yet dropped to the retail outlets or for online ordering. They will in about three more weeks.

Thanks, Wisty. I don't pre-order, and perhaps I should. My N-M lady calls to tell me when they'll be in, and I then go try on, get them fitted, then pick them up when they're ready the next week. This is how I've always done it. It's how we all do here for the designer stuff. I apologize for having doubted you and for making that worse by having been snide. I mean that. Thanks again.
