George Clooney's 'The Monuments Men': Star Writing Directing, Acting In Nazi Art Theft Film

Rolling in awards nominations for his political thriller "The Ides of March," George Clooney is already headed back to work.

According to The Wrap, the star, who next week will go up for three Golden Globes for "Ides," will co-produce, co-write, direct and star in "The Monuments Men," a thriller about art experts assigned by the Allied governments to recover the prolific amount of art stolen by the Nazis out of European museums.

Like with "Ides," Clooney will be working with partner Grant Heslov to create a script from material from another medium. While "ides" was based on the play "Farragut North," the pair will this time adapt from a book. The source original story comes from the nonfiction "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History," by Robert M. Edsel.

"In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Monuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture," a description of the book on Amazon reads. "Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments Men and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis."

Clooney has generally made films on a tight budget. "Ides" was made for just $12.5 million and "Good Night And Good Luck," his Edward R. Murrow film, budgeted at $7.5 million. His most expensive film, 2008's "Leatherheads," cost $58 million. This time, the star says, he'll be venturing on a more expensive endeavor.

"I'm not opposed to doing a commercial film, I'm just opposed to doing a commercial film that doesn't feel organic to me," he told The Wrap. "So if we're going to do a commercial film we thought, 'Let's do something that seems fun and actually have something to say.'"

Directing is now his passion, he told reporters at the Toronto Film Festival this fall.

"My career path for the last 10 years or so is to direct. Directing takes a long time to get done. My day job is acting, That's how I make my living, and directing is something I want to do," he said at a press conference for his other fall film, "The Descendants," for which he is nominated for Best Actor in a Drama at the Golden Globes. "So in between [directing jobs], if I get to work with good directors, there we go."

Clooney is no a great talent. He carries this "I'm too cool for this role vibe" throughout almost every one of his films.

from the title, i thought this article is talking about his "next move" on new girlfriend

Directing might be a good idea. When I see George Clooney in a movie - he is George Clooney. I never see him become the character and I get lost in the movie as he becomes Bill, Sam, or Joe. There are all the other actors becoming something and then there is George Clooney as George Clooney. I would like to see how he does in the director's seat.

He's proven he's very limited in the integrity dept. so don't think it matters much what he does or doesn't do directing or acting wise anymore.

His new film"I'm coming out of the Closet"

Perhaps it is your wish that he would come out of the closet but do not hold your breath.
I love when people use sexuality as an insult. So immature.

there was a gentleman who lived in my county who was one of the soldiers who helped save the lipizanners from the encroaching russians (who wanted to eat them; they were starving). there was an article in our local weekly newspaper about it, and the details of their harrowing journey was fascinating; he said he remembers patton saying, if you're caught, you're on your own. he worked with an international rider (i think he was german) who was considered the greatest horseman at that time.

it's good to see movies such as this bringing to life aspects of wwII that you wouldn't think of, things happening behind the scene as it were, to preserve history.

I've seen Lipizanners at the Marine Base in Camp Pendleton, CA. Beautiful animals. That's an amazing story.

Earlier he was ranting how women can carry a film and they should have more opportunities to do so. But his next project appears to be male - heavy. Typical liberal - pontificate about a real problem, but do nothing about it, especially when it comes to opening the wallet.

really? must you politicize everything...and we liberals ROCK!
06:36 PM on 01/08/2012
When someone with Clooney's clout whines about the lack of opportunities in Hollywood and then plans on producing, co-writing, and directing a male-dominated movie - yeah. Bottom line - you liberals talk the talk, but you do jack to remedy the problems you are oh-so concerned about, especiallyy when it comes to ponying up some of your own cash.

He should stick to directing and maybe writing. As an actor, he's still pretty limited.

What about Darfur? has he gotten bored by that?

Some people both walk and chew gum.

Darfur and South Sudan are the main reason he's doing movies and other commercial ventures these days--to fund his humanitarian commitments. That satellite monitoring Sudan costs loads of money. George Clooney has my respect. There's a lot of good this man is doing quietly, behind the scenes.

I had the honor back in college to meet with one of the 8 remaining monuments men. I spent hours talking with him and interviewing him. His stories were prolific. He was probably one of the smartest people I have ever met. He passed away a couple of years ago. I truly hope this justice does the monuments men justice.

Perhaps I don't understand how money is actually made in Hollywood, but when you look down a list of George Clooney's movies, he's not exactly a hit factory (other than Oceans, etc.). Yet he remains one of the film businesses highest paid, most sought after stars. Interesting.

Clooney makes small-budget films profitable. Is that so hard to understand?

George Clooney is a national treasure with the likes of Tom Hanks and Brad Pit. I would put a woman on that list but every time I think of Natalie Wood and her untimely demise and makes me so angry I can't think strait.
