Mitt Romney's Mexican Roots; His Father Was Born In Mexico, Could Choose Dual Citizenship

Romney

Four years after electing its first black president, the U.S. could soon have its first presidential nominee whose father was born in Mexico.

It's already been published: Mitt Romney's father is Mexican. George Romney was born in 1907 in an American colony in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

This could could make his son, Mitt, today's favorite to be the GOP presidential candidate, a potential Mexican citizen, with full rights.

Check out any official Mexican guide for "paisanos" - those living in the U.S. - that now appear to have been written with Romney's father in mind: "Dear Paisano: If you are Mexican and have children born in the United States, by registering them in any Mexican consulate they will have dual nationality." (source in Spanish)

Mitt Romney needs to just -- if he hasn't already -- go to the closest consulate to his domicile (or whenever he is campaigning right now) with some documents that his aides-de-camp could easily gather: the birth certificate of baby Willard Mitt, born March 12, 1947 in Detroit, Mich., together with the name of the hospital and the doctor in charge, his father George W. Romney's birth certificate and two witnesses.

In fact, the GOP front runner has deep roots in Mexico, including his second cousin Leighton Romney, and about 40 other relatives descended from religious pioneers who first traveled to Mexico 125 years ago, according to report airing tonight on NBC's "Rock Center with Brian Williams." The Romneys of Mexico live in Colonia Juarez and Colonia Dublan, two remaining settlements just 175 miles south of the border. They said they support the candidate and are proud of their family history. Romney has never come to visit.

"He's got a great pioneer heritage starting with people that crossed the plains going from Illinois to Utah, and then on from Utah down to Mexico," Leighton Romney told NBC's Mike Taibbi. "So there's a great heritage there of people that had to fight for what they believed in and for people that had to travel to different places and learn different things. I think there's a vast amount of experience that he could draw from there."

Of course, Romney never considered himself Mexican. He has said little about this part of his life. His family moved to that country fleeing American laws against polygamy, then considered a crucial pillar of his church.

The Romneys are Mexican since Miles Park Romney crossed the border in 1884, rejecting the Edmund Act that in 1882 declared polygamy a felony.

In 1890, the Mormon Church (LDS) disavowed plural marriage.

According to an AP story, Miles married his fifth wife seven years later. His own father had 12 wives.

In 1912, Mitt grandfather's Gaskell Romney returned to the U.S. fleeing the Mexican Revolution. (No mention of immigration papers here). The Romney family's genealogy page states he lost all his "home and possessions" there. But the family later sued the Mexican government and was awarded damages in 1938. This seed money "put the family on a solid financial footing." The fact that his father was then a sort of Mexican immigrant didn't prevent George from becoming CEO of American Motors and the governor of Michigan.

This is relevant, of course, because among all Republican candidates in the 2012 election cycle, as well as in 2008, Mitt Romney has been the one who consistently argued against immigration reform and for the swift deportation of all undocumented immigrants in the United States. He recently criticized the suggestion by another conservative candidate -- Newt Gingrich -- to legalize those immigrants who have lived here for decades who "go to church and pay their taxes" as "Amnesty" -- one of the worst insults in his lexicon.

Again, his Mexican past was never a secret. But not everybody knew it. Now, in the heat of the primaries and the debates between the GOP candidates, Romney's Mexican father turns out to be breaking news, an exclusive. Like a terrible family secret was suddenly disclosed.

All of a sudden, there is an interview with distant cousin Leighton Romney, who still lives in Colonia Dublan, 175 miles south of the Mexican.

"We certainly have a love for both countries," Leighton Romney told NBC. "I can sing both national anthems and tear up at both of them. I think that having two countries that you love and two countries that you can serve or be a beneficiary of their service is a great thing."

Why is this coming out now?

Could it be because those who are behind the re-re-re-publication of the alleged secret want to identify Romney as a Mexican exploiting the deep distrust of everything Mexican many of them have?

This is all reminiscent of the outrageous campaign that attempts to de-legitimize President Obama, arguing that he is not fit to rule the country because (other than his supposed identity as a socialistic, occult-believing Muslim, etc., etc...) even if he was born here, he is still the son of a man born in a foreign country. Kenya.

Where will it stop?

Romney's grandfather was an illegal immigrant? The Romney's moved to Mexico to escape US laws on polygamy. Did they give up their American citizenship? I want to see Romney's birth certificate! Mainly to protect American soldiers, children born of Americans parents may be considered Americans, but what about people who gave up their American citizenship? When did Mexico (mostly Catholic) allow more than one wife?

Don't forget John McCain who was born in Panama. Although born in the Canal Zone, that area an remained unincorporated U.S. territory, which would make him ineligible to run for President.

No - i believe his father was in the US Navy at the time, and serving in Panama - hence John is considered a "natural born american" citizen

The platform makes clear that "we oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally violating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it." It demands that the Justice Department halt lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama and other states that have enacted tough measures against illegal immigrants. It says federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants. It advocates making English the official national language.
09:38 AM on 09/01/2012
And the problem with all of this is what? Illegal means illegal. I can be ticketed for making an illegal U-turn, but someone who is breaking the nation's law by being in the country illegally should be forgiven? Do you realize how much money is spent on the "illegal" community? While I am a moderate democrat, I don't have one bit of a problem with any of this. I also think it is high time that English is made the official language (again, how much money is spent translating things into Spanish (I've rarely seen things translated into Polish, Italian, etc.)?).

One of the key things here is that Mitt Romney's grandfather Miles, denounced his U.S.Citizenship. How is that for Mitt to proudly proclaim his family heritage with? Yet, when it was convenient to do so, the elder Romney sought out his U.S. connection to help bring his son George back across the border and live on U.S. government relief when they lived in El Paso. Mitt, why is that never part of the narrative of your family story?

They did it to Mr.Obama and it was not about dual citizenship but about if he was an American at all,but let be fair and tell the true , it was about his color and as long as Mitt Romney had no black in him as far as we know.you know the one eight thing we have in america that make you black/person of color.Who know, his father was born in Mexico maybe he do have some one eight of color in him after all. What do you think?

Romney's citizenship shouldn't be any more of a question than Obama's, but the media are only going there because Romney brought it up. I find it amazing that even Mr. Etch a Sketch would try smearing Obama on his roots because in April 2011 he had his lawyers check it out with reference to his own plans to campaign and he confirmed that his legal team - which I would think would be a hella lot smarter than any commenters (including me) on this thread or any othr - said that Obama was eligible no matter where he was born; that "natural born citizens" can be born in any country provided one of their parents is an American citizen and registers the child as an American. The English do (or did) that too. Anyway, here's an article that confirms what I just said, since I'm sure the trolls are going to start wailing "he never did..." and "the founding fathers said..." in about 3-2-1. (PS - you'll note that the article comes from Fox news).

So, let me get this straight, four years ago, the Liberal media did its best to stay away from Africa and Obama's roots. They tried as hard as they could to not connect him to his Muslim roots. You couldn't dare to mention Obama's middle name, otherwise you were some kind of bigot. But now, four years later, the GOP's candidate's heritage is an open book. OMG, this hypocrisy is beyond belief!!!

I agree that it is stupid that Birthers are attacking Obama's birthright when George Romney, Mitt's father was born in Mexico and was Governor of Michigan and ran for President. Hypocrisy is a big part of politics. I am Independent and believe that mud slinging should be left out. We should be able to decide who we want to lead on a plan for all issues and candidates should focus and lay out those plans in detail with numbers and facts that we can all understand. After all if we were hiring an employee, that's what we'd be looking at.

How could George Romney CHOOSE dual citizenship when Mexico did not recognize dual citizenship until the 1970s? This article was not very well researched...

George Romney's citizenships has never clearly been legally identified. It WAS an issue when he ran for President and only faded away as he lost front runner status to Nixon. That may be why Romney tofries to keep this on the back burner. His father's citizenship never being clearly defined in the legal sense may in fact raise an issue of Romney's own status. No one to my knowledge has seen Romney's birth certificate. However, it is generally assumed he was born in Michigan as he claims. There is no reason to doubt that. However, if George Romney were not a legal citizen of the USA, Mitt could be claimed as an anchor baby of which the GOP goes to great lengths to demonize.

Something could also be puzzling about not seeing Romney's birth certificate. There are some who claim Mitt may indeed be the son of Willard Marriott after whom he is named. That of course would raise a whole new set of issues that I am sure Romney would use his considerable financial clout to keep from airing.

George Romney never had Mexican citizenship, contrary to what is stated in the above HP article. He had U.S. citizenship at birth because he was born to U.S. parents, which precluded him from getting Mexican citizenship according to Mexican law:

"Mexico abided by versions of jus sanguinis citizenship, Latin for “right of blood,” with birthright citizenship only granted to children born to citizens of Mexico. The elder Romney’s foreign bloodline would have precluded him from being a Mexican citizen. So in the end, Mitt Romney was born to a Mexican-born U.S. citizen."
http://multiamerican.scpr.org/2012/07/mitt-romneys-son-in-new-tv-ad-my-grandfather-george-was-born-in-mexico-video/

Furthermore, before he became so desperate for Latino votes he flip-flopped, Romney himself said in a Univision interview that it would be "disingenuous" of him to claim Mexican heritage.

“…my dad was born in Mexico, and I am proud of my heritage. But he was born of U.S. citizens who were living in Mexico at the time, and was not Hispanic. He never spoke Spanish, nor did his parents. So I can’t claim that honor.”

It's telling he had to trot out his one son who speaks Spanish to do the ad, seeing as he doesn't speak Spanish himself.

Wow if he win we'll have the first Mexican president. Careful not to go to Arizona Mitt

Let the government of Arizona check his ID and decide what to do with him.

The truth is... contrary to what George Lopez said...
Mitt Romney does not have one drop of Latino blood in him.

Mitt Romney's dad, George Romney, was born to 2 US born parents.. Even though he was born in Mexico, George Romney was born to two American citizens, that makes him a US citizen.... His father was born in Saint George, Utah and his mother in Salt Lake City.
George Romney, by blood, was born American... His heritage by blood, is 37.5% British, 37.5% Scottish, and 25% German.

Mitt Romney... again.. no Latino blood. Born to two US Citizens, in Detroit, Michigan. Mitt Romney's heritage by blood, is 65.625% British, 18.75% Scottish, 12.5% German, and 3.125% French. I guarantee you will not find one Latino sounding name in his genealogy.

he doesn't have to have latino blood to be a citizen of mexico if his father has citizenship then he is a citizen.. not all americans have american blood in them. their parents came over got citizenship and now their children are citizens.. pure and simple and if romney is then he needs to be disqualified, the same way they tried to disqualify president obama.. lets see his birth certificate
